After exploring techniques to improve the overall photo, Chris shares his techniques for reducing wrinkles, enhancing eyes and other facial features, improving hair, and retouching makeup. The course concludes with a look at retouching skin and reshaping portions of a portrait using transformations, the Warp tool, and the Liquify filter.
All right, in this movie we're going to continue to work with Curves and masking, in order to correct exposure. Yet for this one, you're going to have to hold on to your hats and glasses, because what we're going to do is apply a Curves adjustment. We're then going to mask that adjustment into a specific area. But we'll also then need to duplicate that adjustment, so that we can correct the color as well. Well, this is a portrait that I captured of Lynda, one of my all-time favorite people. She's one of the cofounders and owners of lynda.com.
Yet when I opened this photograph up, I was so disappointed, because my exposure was off. You can see here on this side of the frame, it's just too dark. Well, let's fix that with the Curves adjustment. Here we'll click on the Curves adjustment layer icon and then we'll just go ahead and click and drag up in order to brighten up part of this photograph. In doing that the picture already just looks a ton better. Has so much more vitality and life in it. But as I made that adjustment, I realize that I also brightened up this area here too much.
How can we then fix that as well? What we can do is we can select our Brush tool. Here we can paint with black, rather than white, in order to conceal the adjustment from this part of the picture. Let's decrease our opacity so we'll go ahead and click and drag our opacity slider to the left. Go down to about 20-25% or so. Next, we want to use a nice soft edge brush. You can double-check your brush hardness here. You also want to have a relatively small brush, so we can work on that detail area, and then I just want to start to paint this away.
So I'm going to go ahead and paint over this area, with a few brush strokes. In doing that, what I'm hoping to be able to do is to darken up these little parts of the photograph. I want to darken up those bright areas there. Here I'm just going to paint back and forth, few little spots here in order to try to darken that up, and I'll just go for that by painting over this area. All right, well we're getting close; we are darkening up this part of the image. Yet in doing so we've also introduced this new problem.
All of a sudden we have this strange color shift over here as well. If we look at the before and after, we can see here's the before, now here's the after, and yes, indeed with this mask, we are able to darken that area there. Yet, we've also introduced this color issue. Well, we can fix that. So let's fix that first by increasing our feather amount in order to soften those edges, and then next what I want to do is I want to duplicate this mask. A great way to duplicate a mask is to Command+Click or Ctrl+Click it.
That will activate the mask as a selection. In this selection here really is everything but this area, because remember we painted with black on this part of the image. That's the opposite of what we need. No big deal. We can invert that in just a moment. Here we'll click on the Curves adjustment layer icon, which will build an adjustment layer with an identical mask. Yet, we just haven't made any changes on this one. Well, in order to work with this, we need to invert our mask. Let me show you why. Here if I click and drag this, you can see I can brighten up all the different areas of the image, everything, but this part.
That's not what I want. So we'll go to the Mask panel and click Invert, and then if I go back to Curves and make an adjustment, you can see now I'm just working on this part of the picture. All right, well next we'll go into our different color channels. I'm going to start off in the red channel and here I'll just click and drag up a little bit. Just add a few points there. Then I'll go down to the Blue, Yellow channel, and I'll click and drag down to add a few points of yellow. In doing that, we can then color correct this area that we masked out, and while this did take a few steps, it did ultimately lead us to a better overall photograph.
Next I'm just going to feather the edges of this mask here a little bit more, and also do the same things with this underlying layer as well. In doing that I just want to kind of soften what I had done there. All right, well if we look at our overall before and then now here the after, we have corrected this exposure using Curves, and we've also color corrected a specific area of our photograph using masks.
