In this course, photographer, author, and teacher Chris Orwig details the tools every photographer needs to retouch portraits to make them look their best while remaining authentic. The course includes an overview of the retouching process and how to develop a plan for a retouching project.
After exploring techniques to improve the overall photo, Chris shares his techniques for reducing wrinkles, enhancing eyes and other facial features, improving hair, and retouching makeup. The course concludes with a look at retouching skin and reshaping portions of a portrait using transformations, the Warp tool, and the Liquify filter.
Effective wrinkle reduction or removal of many times takes a number of little steps. So if you are still tracking with me, I commend you for sticking with it. Because it's these little steps that many times lead to the best results. Well, some of the little steps that I haven taken are in separate layers. Right now I have to scroll up and down in my Layers panel in order to see what I have done. Well, you can change the way that your Layers panel displays layers, by clicking on this flyout menu icon here. And then you can choose panel options. This will open up the Layer Panel Options dialog.
What we can do is we can change the thumbnail size of the layer. In doing that those layers now appear much more small. Sometimes this is helpful, especially when you have a lot of layers. But still here in my document I need to scroll up and down. To open up more space for the Layers panel, well just double-click on the tabs above; that will then collapse those, so that we can really see all the layers that we have in our document. What I want to do now is I want to organize these layers and then I want to apply a few finishing touches to this project.
So click in the topmost layer, then hold down the Shift key and click in the bottom layer of the stack. Next, let's group these by pressing Command+G on a Mac or Ctrl+G on Windows, and we'll name this entire group wrinkles. Well, now that we have all of these group together, we can click this whole thing on and off very easily to see our before and after. And what else is interesting about having this group together is we can add a mask to this group to add a mask click on the Add Layer Mask icon. Next, we can select our Brush tool, then we can paint with black.
And by painting with black at a lower opacity, we can then bring back some of the original image. Let's bring this way down, say to 10 or 15%. Then, I'll zoom in a little bit on the photograph, so that you can see what I mean. Here I'll tab the left bracket key, I want to bring back a little bit of the original file here in this part of the photograph. you can see some of those original wrinkles or character lines come back. And by doing that I just want to bring back a little bit more of that original character there, in that part of the face, because when it comes to the eyes I don't want those to look over retouched.
I want someone to be drawn into the picture, not into my Photoshop work. All right, well after having created that mask I think it looks a little better. You can Shift+Click the mask to see the before and after. It's really subtle. But let's zoom in even closer and then Shift+Click that and you can see how I'm bringing back more of that. If I exaggerate this by painting back and forth over this area a little bit more, and then Shift+Click, you can see how we can control that right here on this mask. Now if ever you want to remove what you've done, we'll just paint with white. So here we'll choose white in the foreground color here, and then we can go ahead and bring back in more of the original retouching.
And we can do this in a way that we can really maintain that great character that we have here in the face. And I think that finishing touch, it helps out. Last but not least, we want to click on our Eye icon to look at our before, then click again to look at the after, and this photograph now looks much better. And now that we've dealt with all of those little details and all of those wrinkles, one of the things that I want to do is I want to whiten the teeth, because we can't necessarily work on the skin and then neglect another area; otherwise, the overall retouching will just look imbalanced.
And actually we're going to take a look at how we can whiten these teeth in another chapter. We'll continue to work on this file in that chapter. Yet for now here in this chapter our project has been wrapped up. As you can see, we have that overall before and now after.
