I've saved my progress as Freaky type effect.psd. In this exercise, we're going to take these traced letters, that are a combination of Minimum, which is making the text thicker, Gaussian Blur, which is smoothing out the edges just a little bit, Motion Blur, which is essentially doing nothing. I can't figure out what in the world Motion Blur's contribution is at this point, because you may recall I set the Opacity of the effect to 0 and then somehow that's allowing Find Edges to glom on and create these dark tracings here.
So now what I'd like to do is colorize that dark tracing and then Bevel the letters a little bit as well. So here's what we're going to do. We're going to apply some layer Effects, note that, to this layer that's called the guy in a mirror, because that was the top Text layer when we converted these two Text layers to a Smart Object. Why don't we go ahead and rename this object live type, so we can better keep track of what it is. All right, I'm going to drop down to the fx icon and I'm going to choose Color Overlay. I changed my Default, so I'm now getting gray every time I choose this command.
That's not what I want this time that's for sure. So I'll click on the Color Swatch. I'm looking for a warm color that's going to go well with his face. So I'm just going to enter some values; a Hue of 40 degrees, which is on the yellowish side of orange. Then I'll tab down to Saturation, 100% Saturation. So obviously that's a high Saturation value. I'm going to take the Brightness value down to 25. I'm going to click OK. That doesn't look like a good effect, I'm sure. Well, what we're going to do is change the Blend mode to Screen. Why Screen? Because that way it's not going to do anything to the white areas and it's going to go ahead and brighten up the black, that is that black tracing created by the Find Edges command, and it's going to replace it with this dark brown color.
All right, now let's add in some additional thickening of the edges here using Outer Glow. So I'm going to turn on Outer Glow to make it active. I don't want anything resembling the effect you see onscreen right now. It's totally wrong. I want a dark glow and I want it to be very, very thin. So I'm going to click on this Color Swatch here. Let's go ahead and change the color to the exact same color I dialed in a moment ago, 40, 100, 25, and then click OK, so we have that dark brown, not Screen, but rather Multiply.
So we're darkening in the effect, and then not a Size of 10, a Size of 1, that's all I want, just a little thin edge, because otherwise that tracing that was created by Find Edges is a little bit jagged. All right, now I'll add a Bevel and Emboss Effect. So go ahead and click on Bevel and Emboss. It's going to be pretty simple effect here, but I'm going to leave most of the settings set to their defaults. So a Style of Inner Bevel is fine, Technique, Smooth, Depth of 100%, Direction, Up, Size, 6 pixels, so I'll go ahead and raise that just 1 there.
Then I'm going to click on the Shadow mode down here. This is all fine too, an Angle of 120 and an Altitude of 30. That's the Global Light Setting. So you should see the exact same thing. I'm going to click on the Color Swatch for the Shadow mode. I'm going to change it to a blue, so that we have a kind of complementary color going on. This is a blue that's found inside the image incidentally. It's very similar to the color of his collar and his tie and his jacket and so on. So it's 225 for the Hue value, 50 for Saturation, 50 for Brightness, click OK.
And now I'm going to change both of these guys to 100%. So we want Highlight set to 100%; it's not making that big of a contribution, but still. We also want our Shadow mode set to an Opacity of 100%, and then click OK in order to accept those modifications. So this is the result of these filters and these effects working together. Notice that the contribution made by the filters is not super huge. We wouldn't want it to be super huge, right? We don't want to completely ruin the legibility of our text here, we just want to modify the character forms a little bit.
But if you want to see what things would look like if you had the effects but you didn't have the filters, just turn Smart Filters off for a moment and notice how much thinner and more fragile those letters are. We don't have those nice tactile tracings either. As I'm saying, that Find Edge tracing that I showed you, even though it's wacky, it is different than anything you're going to get using any of the effects. Anyway, turn that back on and you can see, turn Smart Filters back on that is, and you can see the letters thicken up. It actually produces quite a nice effect.
