Darkening by painting on a new layer - Photoshop Tutorial
From the course: Photoshop for Photographers: Lighting Effects
Darkening by painting on a new layer
In the previous movie, we looked at how we could brighten up the road by using a technique which involved creating a new layer and then changing that layer blending mode. And then painting with a bright tone in different areas of the photograph. In this movie, I want to talk about how we can burn or how we can darken different parts of the picture. To do that, again, we'll create a new layer and change the layer blending mode. Yet this time, let's create a new layer by way of a handy shortcut. If you're on a Mac, you're going to press Shift+Cmd+N. If you're on Windows, that's Shift+Ctrl+N. That's a shortcut to create a new layer, and to open up the new layer dialog. Here, let's name this new layer Burn, and we want to change our layer blending mode to Soft Light. We're to do that because we know that this particular layer blending mode works well when it comes to brightening or darkening, and in this case, we're going to do some darkening. Alright, well, let's go ahead and click OK…
