In Photoshop CS6 for Photographers, author, photographer, and teacher Chris Orwig explores Photoshop from the perspective of the photographer.
The course details the features and techniques behind enhancing and retouching photos, preparing them for print and online publishing, and much more. Chris demonstrates how to make basic edits in Camera Raw, develop and save color profiles, work with layers and selections, tone and sharpen, and retouch images while retaining their natural character.
Chris also shares some creative tips and project ideas, such as converting a photo to black-and-white and enhancing a portrait with hand-painted masks. I don't know about you but for me there's just something about black-and-white, there's something fascinating about being able to convert our images to black-and-white. And here we're going to take a look at how we can continue to do that using the Black-and-White Adjustment layer. In particular, we'll look at how we can work with Presets and then we'll also explore a couple of techniques we can use in order to add a tint or toned effect to our black-and-white conversions. Let's go ahead and click on the icon to open up our Black-and-White Adjustment layer. Here I'll press the Spacebar key then click and drag to move this image over.
This is a photograph of my two oldest daughters and two of their best friends down at the beach, and when I convert this to black-and-white, it just feels more timeless. One of the places that you might want to start off here in this panel is with Presets. You can access those by clicking on this pull-down menu. What you'll discover is that when you select a Preset, certain presets will work great with certain images, sometimes though they're just won't work. There are presets here which are functional. Let's say that what you want to do is brighten up all of the reds that's the skin tone.
Well, that looks kind of good. Other presets, well, you can use those for creative effects, say, like this Infrared preset. It creates a completely different aesthetic. And what you want to do is find or choose a preset that you think might work and then customize it. You use these sliders in order to modify the overall tonality of your image, so you can bring up or down whatever tones you want to. Once you've done that, once you've customize this, one of the other things that you might consider is adding a tint or a tone to your image.
You can do that by clicking on this icon here. Here you can see that this tint, it's kind of overpowering the image. Well, if you click on the Color Chip, you can diminish by clicking to the left here, now it's a more faint color. If you choose a more saturated color, you're going to see that's going to have a more prominent effect. You can also select different types of colors; you can either cool an image off or warm it up. So as you find these amounts or as you find the correct color I should say, what you want to do it just to experiment a little bit with how they look, go ahead click around until you find one that you think will work well with your photograph.
Here what I'm interested in doing is having a little bit of a kind of sepia tone. So I'll just go ahead and click and drag that down just a bit and I think that looks good. Next, let's click OK. Well, when you have a tint on top of a white tone, you typically can brighten that up even more, because that tint, well, it kind of subdues or it kind of pulls back those whites. The reason why I illustrate that is after you've added a tint, you may want to modify some of these sliders in order to make some corrections which work a little bit better with that tint, like here I think that sweater or sweat shirt it over there on the left, I think brightening that up works a little better.
Also opening up those Yellows and Reds, I think that looks nice as well. So again, you can do that by simply clicking on this Tint option. Another way that you can work with tint or tone is you can add this after the effect after making this black-and-white adjustment. For example, one really popular technique is to use Color Balance. So here we can click on the Color Balance icon and then I could go ahead and increase my reds and also my yellows a little bit. In this way, I am adding kind of a similar effect.
It's a little but of a sepia tone. You can see that here; here's that before and then now after. Finally, if you are using another layer to add color, one of the advantages of that that I find at least is that rather than having to go into the Color Picker to change the Saturation or Intensity, well, here I can just lower the Opacity. So in this way, I can scale this back so that I now just have this really, really subtle adjustment, the subtle color on top of my image. And by doing that, we've now successfully converted this image to black-and-white and also added this little bit of tone which helps to make this photograph more timeless and intriguing.
