Rufus's productivity-focused, no-nonsense approach will help you quickly learn what you need to know to get the most out of the new and enhanced features in Adobe Photoshop CS5.
Content Aware Fill is an amazing new technology in Photoshop CS5. Let me show you what it does. Let's take the Lasso tool here for a second, and select out this guy, because what I want in this picture is just the trees and the grass, and no guy. So what I want to do is to delete him. And to delete that guy I would probably hit the delete key, which I'm doing now. Delete. Oh a new window. Photoshop asks me how I want to fill the deletion. And the first thing it asks me of course, if I want to use content aware.
But the other options are the foreground color, the background color, any other color, black, grey or white, even a pattern or history brush. Let's take Content Aware and see what happens. Let's click okay, and Photoshop now looks at this image and takes neighboring pixels to fill the gap, and the guy is gone. It's like almost miraculous. It takes pixels from other parts of the image and fills the selection with this data. Unbelievable. Let's take another example here.
In this image, I would like to get rid of the pole, so I would use my lasso tool and probably go in here and select the pole. Let's go here and select all the elements that I want to. Let's make it very rough like so and let go and maybe add some more pole over here. Okay and then, press the delete key. And again Photoshop will ask me how I want to fill that void that I'm creating, with Content Aware information. So let's say Okay to that, and Photoshop now looks at all the surrounding pixels and fills the image with that. So the pole is now gone.
The road is still curvy here and the building looks convincing. Content-aware fill is being used in other areas as well. So let's zoom into this pole area here, and let's say we want to remove this. The other tool that Content Aware Fill is being used for is actually the Spot Healing brush. So if we use the Spot Healing brush on this pole, for example, and let's make rhe brush slightly bigger, and simply paint over the pole. Photo Shop will look around and replace the information with surrounding pixels. So, it can do the same thing for the wire that goes through the road here, through the grass and all the way to the road.
And it replaces all of these pixels with information that looks realistic. So let's do it here on the road as well, and maybe continue here a little bit and really get rid, oops, and get rid of all of that, electrical wiring information here, which we don't want in our image. So, again, with the Content Aware fill, and the Spot Healing brush, we're now able to really delete portions of the image, replacing it with existing pixels from the image.
So we've effectively removed the pole, and the little pole down here, and maybe what we want to do now is to also remove the wires here in the sky. Or on the background. So again I would use the spot healing brush, and in this case a smaller brush so it picks up less of the surrounding pixels. And I would carefully draw over the wire like this, and Photoshop will replace that with the information from surrounding pixels. So very, very quickly, I can go into any image and by using content aware fill, correct it, clean it up like never, ever before.
