Photoshop CS5 One-on-One: Advanced, the second part of the popular and comprehensive series, updated for CS5, follows internationally renowned Photoshop guru Deke McClelland as he dives into the workings of Photoshop. I am still working inside the Clipped irises.psd file, I have added a handful of layer effects as you saw in the previous exercise. I am going to add two more, one is the Color Overlay effect which helps us to replace the colors inside the eyes a little bit, and then the other is Satin, which is not an effect you use very often but it's going to come in handy here, I am just going to apply a light helping, this is subtle helping of Satin to the eyes in order to add some full reflectivity. All right, so my new irises layer is still selected here inside the layers Palette, I am going to dropdown to the ?x icon, and this time I am going to choose Color Overlay and I was telling you that the Na'vi have the sort of greenish golden eyes and so we need to dial-in a greenish golden color here and I am going to click on this red color and switch it out with something different, and in this case the color that I came up with has a Hue value of 75 degrees, a Saturation value of 30% and a Brightness of 100%, I guess that was already dialed in, looks like this, so this pale green color, click OK.
Notice here inside Photoshop CS5 if you like your new color so much that you want to use it all the time, you can click on Make Default so that's always your default color when you create a new Color Overlay layer; kind of neat if you are doing repetitive work inside the program. Then I am going to change my Blend mode from Normal to Color, because I just want to color the eyes, and that's too much we are really going hog-wild with replacing the color in both of these irises as you can see. So I am going to take my Opacity value down to 60%, like so, and that looks pretty good to me.
Now then for this wacky Satin effect, we will just preview it on one eye. I will go ahead and click on Satin to turn it On, and by default we have got black as our Satin color. I am going to go ahead and click on that color and let's replace it with white, just by clicking in this upper-left corner of the color field and I will click OK to accept that modification. Then I am going to raise the Opacity value to 100% so we can really see it and I am going to change to Blend mode to the hyperlight mode inside of Photoshop which is Linear Dodge (Add), so we will go ahead and choose that mode.
Now let's change the Contour from what it currently is that Gaussian contour to this guy right there Ring - Double. So go ahead and click on it and then we get this double ring effect which is just insane. Now notice I can drag inside of the Image window in order to create different effects, and that will give you different angle and distance values. If you take a look at the layer style dialog box you can see the Angle and Distance values changing on-the-fly. The values that I ended up coming up with just again through trial-and-error are 176 for the Angle value, and then let me get my Cursor out of the way there, 17 for the Distance value and then 76 for the Size value, like so, and then we get that lovely Satin effect and you may look at that and say, my gosh! we have a crazy hypnotized Na'vi now, that's terrible, but what I am going to do is take that Opacity value down to 8%, that's all.
Just a little bit of Satin going on and now let me show you the difference, this is without Satin, this is with Satin. So very subtle application of the Satin layer effect here inside Photoshop and click OK in order to accept that modification. Now at this point, we need to add the pupils and we most certainly will, but before we do I sort of feel like we need to do a little refinement to the mask, because the iris is cutting into the edge of the eye here. Now that I have added all these different effects and now that we see how the finished irises blend with the rest of the image it's obvious that I need to refine this layer mask a little bit, and I am going to refine this mask and the knockout layer actually in a way that will produce more pleasing effects in the next exercise.
