Photoshop CS4 for Photographers is an essential course for any digital photographer who wants to master the software's vast array of image enhancement techniques. Professional photographer and instructor Chris Orwig uses his own compelling images to demonstrate how the power of Photoshop can make photographers more passionate about their work. He covers many aspects of the application, such as working with RAW images, using curves and levels, making images snap, and enhancing bland photographs by converting them to black and white. Exercise files accompany this course.
In this movie we will be working on this beautiful photograph, that was captured by my friend Michael Costa. You should check out his work; you can see at at michaelcostaphotography.com. Let's go ahead and double click that file to open it up in Photoshop and then press F to go to Full Screen View mode and then press the Spacebar to reposition the image. Now when you select your Eyedropper tool, you will notice that I have already added a sample point. We have already talked about how to do that so I'm not going to delete that one. You will also notice that I have already set up my percentages here. Here I have my Yellow, Magenta and my Cyan. All right, well, I need to go ahead and correct this image and in order to correct this image, I may imagine it's going to take me a few step, because I'm seeing quite a strong color shift. Now, I just want to point out, that if you open up this Reference folder, let's go ahead and close this Adjustment layer for a moment, and turn this on. What are things you are going to see? you are going to see that I have included some Adjustments Layers that we will be doing in this movie. So you have those as the reference points, so you can refer back those later.
All right, well, back to our image, let's go ahead and correct this one. The first thing we need to do is open up a new Curves Adjustment Layer and take a look at our numbers. Well, my Magenta, my Yellow numbers are not looking too good. They are way too high, Yellow is way too high, so I go to the Blue Yellow channel, grab the Target Adjustment tool and you know what we want to do here, right? We want to reduce the overall amount of Yellow. Next we are going to work on that Magenta channel. So we go to the Green Magenta channel and here I'm just looking to bring that amount down and I'm going to bring this down pretty far, I'm going to bring it down pretty far here then go back to my Blue Yellow channel, then here I'm going to lower this even further.
Now, so far so good, these numbers are pretty close .Yellow is a little bit higher. Well, how about the Cyan, well, 3 times 30 is 90, 5 times 30 is 150, so I have a little bit of a problem here, yet I did say that your Cyan amount could be as close to one- half, so 2 times 30 is 60, 3 times 30 is 90, so will that value actually work? Well, yeah, let's take a look at our overall Before and After. Here is our Before and here is our After, that image is looking much better, the skin tones are looking much more natural.
Now, I may want to still experiment with my Cyan amount. So I'll go ahead and navigate back to my Red Cyan channel, and I click to hover over this. I'm going to go ahead and lower this even further and one of the thing that we are going to see here, is I'm adding more Red to the image. Now, as I do that and as I get this closer to our range, so let's say its a little closer between now one-third and one-fifth. Does it look good? No, well, I'm teaching myself a pretty important lesson here, when I have darker tone skin as I said before in that little recipe hand out. This amount really needs to come up, now I can experiment a little bit with this, I can go as high as what about 35%, right? Closer to about a half of the percentages of Magenta and Yellow. Now when I do that , look at my Before and After, I think you know what, those skin tones look really good and this image now has been successfully Color Corrected.
The only last thing that I have to point out is that we chose a new sample point, but you notice that I clicked Off of the Highlight, so not on the highlight the cheek, because I see a little bit of make up there. I could have also sampled this area on the chin, or appear on the forehead, there is a little bit too much light from here, it's a little too bright, so I didn't want to go there. So I want to choose this point down here and that sample point ended up working out really well for me. Now, as you are working on your images, you may want to hold down the Shift key and click and drag this point around. Now, when I drag it over here, do these values still work down here on the chin? Well, yeah, we could also go up to the forehead, do those values work up there? Yeah, they do, so all that I'm doing here at the end of this movie is I'm kind of spot checking myself, because you can't sample an area in Color Corrected, but your sample point can be Off. So it's nice to move that sample point around ,just to make sure that your skin tones are going to look their best. All right, well, that wraps up this movie, I hope that it is helpful.
