You can change the entire mood of a photograph just by adding a little subtle change in color. In the past we would typically do this by adding a filter on the camera and actually change the way that we recorded the image when we made it. But of course you can also add these creative changes with the Photo Filter in Photoshop. So in the Adjustments panel I'm going to click on the Photo Filter to add it as an adjustment layer and we can see here across the top that we have a number of different filters that we can apply and the ones with the numbers of course reference those filters that we would actually use in camera.
So you can either select from those filters or from any of these different colors right here. Or we can scroll down and maybe select a deep red or a deep blue or if you can't find the preset filter that you want you can click in the color swatch here and then use the color ramp in order to select whatever color you want to apply. I'm going to move the density up quite far to the right here. because I want to show you the difference between Preserve Luminosity being checked on, in which case Photoshop is trying to preserve all of the grayscale values in your image.
And if I uncheck that you can see that my image gets darkened down because Photoshop's actually overlaying the density of the color that I've selected here. So it's up to you whether or not you want to change the luminosity values. If you don't, just check that back on. We'll go ahead and pull back on the density a little, and then I'm going to change this from a green to a warmer color, maybe in the yellow oranges. Make it a little stronger, click OK, and now we can toggle this on and off, so that's without it, and that's with it.
And of course we could always apply this photo filter to a black and white image, not just a color image. And there you have it, a very quick yet flexible way to change the mood of your image by changing the quality of light.
