Introduction
Welcome
00:00(MUSIC).
00:04Hi, I'm Bert Monroy, and welcome to Dreamscapes.
00:07This is a continuation of Volume 2. What I really want to stress is that,
00:10everything you're going to see is being done with very bad photography.
00:15In fact, most of it is taken with a phone, not a big fancy camera.
00:19The point is that, you can do just about anything you can imagine with Photoshop.
00:25And what am going to use is just very simple throw away vacation shots and
00:29transform them into some real effects. The effect that you can easily create by
00:34just following simple steps in Photoshop. Nothing elaborate, no fancy studio is necessary.
00:40In fact, most of these things are the kind of vacation shots you would normally
00:42throw away. This is just very simple steps to create
00:46very fantastic scenes.

7. Underwater
Introduction
00:00Put on your swim trunks for this dreamscape because we're going to take a
00:03little trip under water. It's going to be a sunken ship, just
00:06sitting on the ocean floor in an incredible environment with fish swimming
00:10all around it.
00:13

Selecting the boat
00:00On this screen we see a boat. It's an old boat that was grounded a long
00:04time ago. It's not seaworthy anymore, it's just
00:07sitting there rusting away. Well this boat is going to be the subject
00:11of our underwater scene. It's going to be a sunken boat way down below.
00:16So now were going to go in there and select this boat and pull it out of its
00:19existing scene. So here I'm going to choose, two ways of
00:23selecting, one which is the easy one and then one which is going to be a little
00:26more work. First one you're going to choose, color range.
00:31Color range, right now, it comes in and finds a certain range right there, which
00:34is just blue. And so now I'm going to hold down my
00:37Shift key and I'm going to click and drag The cursor through the entire sets of
00:41blues and you can see that it's picked up all those other tones in there.
00:46I'm going to come down and pick up those lighter tones down there.
00:49So I picked up the entire area of blue. I'm going to click OK.
00:54You see that it selected the entire area of the blue.
00:56What I'm going to do is add to that selection.
00:58I'm going to hold on my Shift key and just kind of bring in some of this stuff
01:01that we see right here, right off the bat so we have it.
01:05Now what I'm going to do is I'm going to save that selection.
01:09going to come in here and say Save the selection.
01:13And I'm going to call it boat. And I could deselect it now.
01:17And saving selection what its done is it's created an alpha channel which we
01:20see right here. Now that alpha channel has taken into
01:24account some of the major parts of the boat.
01:27And you can see that the hard things that would be to go in there.
01:30And set up by going in there and tracing all these little banisters and stuff, but
01:34now we get the rest of the boat to deal with.
01:38So what I'm going to do is work from within the same area here.
01:41Now the parts that you see gray here, they were very similar in blue.
01:45Which is why they got selected as well. What I'm going to do is I'm simply
01:48going to paint those black. You've seen me use alpha channels in some
01:50of the other classes and then I explained alpha channels.
01:53So here what's happening is I'm just going to go in there and black is
01:55going to protect, so I hide those. So I turn on to see the RGB and now that
01:59I can see it, I'm going to start to continue to paint it.
02:04And then if I paint with black, I'm going to go in there and make it black.
02:08And in fact, what we could do is go in there and invert this, because what we
02:11really want to do is select the boat. So I'm going to go in there, and invert
02:15the alpha channel, and now we see it as white.
02:17See there it is. So now I can go in there and retouch just
02:21a little bit. Like for instance some of these greys we
02:24can get rid of those really quickly by going into something like levels.
02:27And levels I can go in there, and just say let's make those dark tones darker.
02:31There you go see so those greys disappeared because I brought my dark
02:34slider over into the darkening range which made those little areas much lighter.
02:39See the same thing here. There's some little strips of water back there.
02:42By pushing the black slider in, those were eliminated right of the bat.
02:46And now I need to do the rest. So I want to see those color layers on top.
02:50So I start to paint, and I'm getting real close.
02:54And basically what I'm doing is kind of like doing in a coloring book.
02:57We're going to go in here and start to paint.
02:59I'm going to go right through this, along the edge of the boat, just like so.
03:04I can start to go in there and just expose just the parts that I want of the
03:07boat itself and go all the way through. Now a lot of the bottom of the boat is
03:12like it is right being covered by land it is going to be covered by our
03:15underwater-scape, so it not that crucial that I get all of it.
03:20But I do want to get the major parts of the boat that are visible.
03:23So I'm going to go in here and select that boat.
03:26And I'm painting with black which means that all of this area here.
03:29Will be hidden. So now, to save some time, you get the
03:32general idea of how to get this done. The end result is going to look like that.
03:36Where I have my boat completely isolated making it easy to go in there and select
03:40the boat and pull it out of its background so that I can then utilize it
03:43on the water scene. And the next movie we will start to do is
03:48to create the underwater scene itself. And you see up here?
03:52See these grays? When you stand back and you look at your
03:55image, you definitely want to make sure that everything, that you don't want to
03:58be selected is in fact black. So, I fill that area with black and there
04:03we see that outboat is now completely Expose.
04:06And evenUNKNOWN you need to go in there and just get rid of some of that stuff.
04:11But you get the general idea of how you get the boat selected away from its background.
04:15

Compositing the bottom of the boat
00:00Now that we have our boat nicely selected, (UNKNOWN) we're going to look
00:03at our boat, there it is, we're going to put it into the underwater scene.
00:10Now, I have this shot here that I took underwater quite some time ago, I was
00:13doing some scuba diving down in the Caribbean.
00:16I got this shot, not much of a shot, but it was kind of cool.
00:20It just, I was just shooting away with a digital camera, you can take as many
00:23pictures as you want, as the card will hold, so I just shot and shot and shot.
00:28And this shot just seemed perfect for our little scene now.
00:32Now, I need to make this into a tall vertical shot.
00:36So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to select for the background color, the very
00:42top blue of my scene here. Now, there's a slight variance in tone
00:48here, very slight variance, but I'm going to select that color there.
00:52And then when I just clicked on this side, you see that there is a slight
00:55difference between the two blues, but that's okay.
00:58I'm going to start with this one first. What I'm going to do is I'm now going to
01:02give it more canvas. I'm going to go into the Canvas Size.
01:05Now, the reason I selected that blue as the background is that as I add new
01:10canvas, the canvas will take on the color of the background.
01:16Now if the background color was set to the defaults of black and white, then the
01:20new canvas would be white. But by choosing that blue, which is in
01:24the image as the background color, it'll give me my new canvas based on that blue.
01:30So, what I'm going to do is, right now, my size of my file, it's quite large.
01:34This is the way it comes straight from the camera.
01:36It's 45 inches in the width, and 34 inches on the height.
01:41So, I'm going to double the height. I'm going to make it 60 inches, nice and
01:44large, and put the existing image at the bottom.
01:48So it'll create the new 30 inches will be up here.
01:52So, I click OK, and there, we could see that we've added that to the top of the image.
01:58So there's that that color in there. We can see where it's a little bit off.
02:03We're going to fix that later because we're going to add a whole bunch of other
02:06things to this background. If you feel odd or don't like it the way
02:09it is now, that's okay, well, we can go in there and fix it now.
02:13We have these two colors again so what I'm going to do is I'm going to go in and
02:16throw a Gradient and throw a Gradient into a layer right above the whole thing here.
02:22Now, it looks to me like there's a slight change in, in the tone here and it gets
02:28darker here again. So, what I'm going to do is I'm just
02:33going to kind of throw a Gradient going in this direction like that, right
02:37through here. There we go.
02:40And right now I just noticed it's set to Background to Transparent.
02:44We could try that, let's just do it right through there.
02:46There we go. That's got a nice little feel to it.
02:49And what we'll pick is now this darker tone right in there.
02:52We'll pick that for the foreground. So, what I'll do is I'll throw a little
02:56Gradient down in there in the same layer because we're going from Foreground to Transparent.
03:00So, let's just throw a little tone right in there and see how they start to mix
03:03together and it's starting to give us this nice little effect.
03:07And there's a slight little line there no problem because we're going to get rid of
03:09that once we put the boat and stuff in there.
03:12And then, we're going to throw a whole cast on top of the whole thing later anyway.
03:16So, when we look at it, there we've created these two little Gradients that
03:19kind of blended in our background to make kind of a lot smoother.
03:23So now, we got our boat. So, I'm going to use the Channel to
03:27select that boat. There's the Channel we use to select.
03:31And I'll drag this down, so I could take my boat and drag it right into my scene,
03:35right there. Now, the boat is a little small.
03:39No problem. What I'm going to do is, I'm going to
03:41enlarge it. Command+T to bring up my Transform tools
03:43and I'm going to just make it to the size that I want, right, about like that.
03:48You know, a little larger. Yeah, it's a nice boat.
03:52And I'll put it right in position where I want it, right about there like that.
03:56So now, this boat is on the water and I want it to interact with its surroundings
04:00down in here, so I'm going to go in here in mask it.
04:04So, I'm going to give that layer, the layer of the boat, which we will now
04:08call, Boat, and I'll give it a mask. There's my mask.
04:15So, with black, which is going to hide, I'm going to take my Paintbrush.
04:18Now, it's very rough down here. It's very rough.
04:21So, I'd like to get that same roughness into the edges of where this boat is
04:26stuck into the ground. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
04:30take my Paintbrush, and I'm going to choose one of the Spatter Brushes, one of
04:33these here. I'm going to take that one right there,
04:36the 46 because it's got some nice clumps in the middle there so it got some nice
04:39variety to it. Now, I'm going to go to my Brush Engine
04:43where I'm going to give it a little spacing.
04:48It is facing like that. And then I'm going to go into Shape
04:51Dynamics, where I'm going to bring down the roundness down to zero.
04:54I don't want any change in the roundness, the angle at 100%, because you see, as I
04:58do that, you see that right there, they are all the exact same direction.
05:03So that is going to make each tip a different direction.
05:06And the sides here, we have to 100% difference.
05:09Let's bring down that minimum a little bit or bring it up rather so they don't
05:12get too small there, like that. Now, that I see what I am doing, I'm
05:16going to bring the spacing back in a little bit.
05:18There we go. So that it gets a little tighter.
05:20And there, we have the brush that we're going to use.
05:23So now, make it a little bigger and I got black.
05:26And I'm painting in the mask so I'm going to start to paint.
05:29And there, you can see that I'm starting to get this little feel in here of some
05:33of that stuff coming in from underneath. So, I'm going to bring it down a little
05:38bit in size just so I can kind of get some of these things to look like what
05:41they are. And we've got this big thing here so
05:45let's just kind of bring it up. There's this thing, reef, or whatever it
05:50is down there. Let's just roughen this all up so it
05:54looks like all these little pieces of the ocean floor there are, in fact, obscuring
06:00parts of our little boat. We're going to get more of this thing
06:06going, and let's put down the Opacity for this boat, just so we could see that thing.
06:11Oh, it's really tall. Oh, I'll tell you what, let's go for the
06:13whole thing. I'm going to go in here and continue to
06:16just bring this whole piece up. There we go.
06:20The whole thing in there, and the same thing with this.
06:23Let's get all this stuff in here just to obscure that part of the boat.
06:29Now, I'm going to get a smaller brush and kind of make it look like little coral
06:33pieces, just coming out like that. Right in here, I'm going to get even
06:38smaller and I can get really tight into this area.
06:40Let's go in there and look at this. I can get really tight into this area, if
06:44I can just get just that shape, with a rough edge, because it has to be rough.
06:51And I'm going to go in there and just kind of follow that same little growth,
06:57whatever that is. Get real small here, and just have these
07:02little guys come up kind of like the way I was tracing the boat in the first place
07:05just to separate it. Except here, what I'm doing is I'm
07:09tracing it to hide it. So, I've got all of these little things
07:13going on. Bring the Opacity back up to 100% and
07:15there, we can see that we're starting to get our boat into the ocean floor and
07:18it's stuck down there. But now, what I'm going to do is I'm
07:22going to apply that Gradient again. So, let's go in here and get this, this Gradient.
07:28Let's get this blue. This nice blue color and create a layer
07:33on top. And we'll pick that blue right there.
07:36And in that layer, I'm going to go ahead and fill it with that blue, and what I'm
07:39going to do is I'm going to trap that layer with our boat right here.
07:44Trap it inside the boat and I'm going to set that to, let's try a couple of
07:46different modes. Set it to screen, and not the boat, I'm
07:50in the wrong layer. There we go.
07:53This is the one. We're going to set this up to screen and
07:55see what that's going to do. And that's a little too strong so let's
07:59just go in there and let's try and overlay.
08:02That's giving us some nice blue, a little blue there.
08:05And you know what, the best one is going to be, believe it or not, just plain
08:08normal and bringing down the Opacity. Bring down the Opacity so that the boat
08:12will now start to blend into its background.
08:15We want that blue to be kind of even all the way through.
08:17So there, and bring it up just a tat. So there, we see that the boat is now
08:22sitting on the ocean floor. In the next movie, we're going to start
08:26adding a few more details to our little scene.
08:30

Adding coral
00:00Now that we have our boat in the water, let's start adding some little features
00:03that are going to create this underwater world.
00:07One thing we need is something in the foreground, something that is going to
00:10kind of tie it all together and give us a place within this whole realm here.
00:14So I got this other image that I took that same.
00:18Diving trip. And that's just coral.
00:20Now what I'm going to do is I'm going to separate this coral pretty much the way
00:23I've done with the other pieces. And that's using an alpha channel.
00:28And there you can see where I've created this alpha channel.
00:29I've got some areas that are kind of soft and light and so on.
00:33And other areas, which I need to really get rid of.
00:36Like, for instance, right here. I'm going to go in here and just.
00:38Clean this up. Click arrow and just get rid of those
00:41kind of things there. I want to keep these guys here, kind of
00:44loose because it's a little velvety area right there in the coral.
00:48So it's just the little soft areas here. I want to maintain those.
00:52So, basically what I did is, I traced it as I had before.
00:56So then I, I exposed the coral. And just the parts that I want, which is
01:01just the coral and this foreground area. So now that I have that, I'm going to go
01:05in there and load the coral. What I'll do is I'm going to then bring
01:09it into my scene. So I grab it, and bring it in.
01:13And there it is, sits right in front. So what I can do it, I'm going to make it
01:17a little larger right off the bat. Make it a little larger here, just like that.
01:21And I'm going to do a little flip horizontal on it.
01:27Then I'm bring it down into this area down here just kind of becomes a little
01:31frame just kind of showing our little boat way back there.
01:35And it kind of shows that we're kind of creeping up on it and there it is under
01:39the water. I might want to go in there and just
01:42enhance it's color. Just to give it a little more interest.
01:44So I'm going to just punch up the saturation a little bit.
01:47because this is closest to us. So were going to start to see, some nice
01:49bright colors there. Click OK.
01:52And there we see that we now have the quarrel.
01:54And in the next movie, what were going to do is create all the stuff in the back here.
01:59
Collapse this transcript
Creating the background and the surface
00:00So now, what we need is we need something behind the boat and we need the surface
00:04of the water. Well, for the background, let's go in
00:08here and look at a couple of shots that I took a long time ago down in Cabo San Lucas.
00:14These giant rocks are going to be perfect.
00:17That's what we're going to use. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
00:19go in here and select these with the magic wand.
00:22And I'm going to click in the blue and Shift-click up there, and make sure I get
00:25all this blue, and all that area there. And I'm going to inverse the selection.
00:31Now, that I got that selected, I'm going to Option, Click and Drag through here to
00:35deselect these portions that I don't want.
00:39I just want, basically, the rocks. Now, the rest is okay.
00:43It's going to be fine because of the fact that the, what's going to happen next is
00:47that I'm going to be able to combine these into one scene here.
00:52And I'm going to blend them in to its background.
00:54So, it doesn't matter. So, I'm going to go in here and grab this
00:57and bring it into my scene. There's the first one.
01:01And I'm going to get the second one, and I'm going to select it the exact same way.
01:04I'm just going to select the sky there. Shift select some more and rest down
01:08there and that little bit of blue up there and then, inverse the selection,
01:12just like before and drag that into my scene.
01:16So there, there's my rocks in place. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
01:21make them a little larger. I'm going to go and take this one right
01:24here and I'm going to put them behind the boat.
01:27I take it and put it way back here behind the boat.
01:32Now, the boat is going to obliterate some of this stuff so we'll going to get it to
01:35all come through really nicely. And then this other rock here, this first
01:39rock here, that one, let's bring it down behind the boat.
01:44All right. So now, what I'm going to do with these,
01:46and this one in particular, I'm going to make it a little larger.
01:49Let's just go in there and increase its size, and bring it down here, like that.
01:55And this one, we'll also make a little larger.
01:57Take this one here, make it larger so it kind of really fills up this space in
02:02here like so and there, we go. Let's just bring it in like that.
02:08So, there's our rocks in the background. So, what I'm going to do with these guys
02:12is I'm going to bring them down in Opacity considerably.
02:14I'm going to bring down the Opacity so that they're just little ghost back
02:17there, way back there. Same thing with this one, I'm going to
02:21bring it all the way down. So, this is even further back.
02:24So, it is even less visible. They are way back in there.
02:28Then I'll give them masks. So, I'm going to give it a mask, and I
02:31want to hide the top part of this thing. So, what I am going to do is I am going
02:35to make sure I am set to (UNKNOWN) to white and in the Mask there, I'm going to
02:38want the bottom part to disappear. So, I'm just going to start down here and
02:43go straight up and throw a mask in it like that, just so it starts to disappear.
02:48Same thing with this one, we'll go and give it a mask so it starts to disappear
02:51and I did it in layer and I didn't give it a mask.
02:56There's a mask. Okay, so we'll throw in there and throw
02:59in that gradient so that it's going to disappear and go a little linear gradient there.
03:05There we go. And that starts to disappear and I just
03:07noticed that this was given a radio gradient, let's go in there and redo that mask.
03:12So there, now these rocks are way behind our boat.` Now, we need the surface of
03:16the water. So, I open up a file that will be perfect
03:20for the surface of the water and you can see, I've got quite a few little shots
03:24that I've used here and got this one. This is one that I took of one of the
03:29other divers. Now, this little line went all the way up.
03:33I just used a Clone tool to get rid of it.
03:35But right there, that's what I want, that little area right up there.
03:38That's going to be perfect for our little scene here.
03:41And maybe that water might be good, too. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
03:44just select that top portion right up in there.
03:47Let's go in here and let's select this top portion right through here and drag
03:52that into our scene. And that we're going to put way up on the top.
03:58There it is. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to
04:01enlarge it so that it fills up that scene entirely.
04:05There it is, that's the surface of the water way up on top.
04:09And what I'm going to do is, I'm going to give it a mask.
04:12And in that mask, I'm going to just very lightly paint away the parts I don't
04:16want, so I'm going to get a large brush here, make it really large, and make it
04:20very soft. I'm going to bring down the Opacity a
04:24bit, so I can start to paint. I'll make it even larger, I'm going to
04:27start to paint away from that area there just so I can start to blend it into my
04:30background, bringing back my rocks that I want to be able to see.
04:36There you go, you're just slowly getting rid of it and leaving those light tones
04:40on top and there we see that now we have the surface of the water visible in our scene.
04:45Now in the next scene, what we're going to do is add some fish.
04:51

Adding fish
00:00Now that our underwater sea is fairly full, we need to add some life, some fish.
00:06I got a couple of fish here, I got this one little guy.
00:09Now, he is kind of very similar to his background, but we can kind of make him out.
00:14So I think the best way to get him separated from the background in this
00:17particular case would be a path. There I have a path that I created that surrounds
00:21the fish if we get in a little close we can see what it looks like and there's a
00:24little path right along here that's encompassing the whole fish.
00:31What I'm going to do is turn that path into a selection so selects our fish and
00:35then we'll bring him into our seam here. Just grab them and drag them into our scene.
00:41Let them just float there for a few minutes.
00:44I have a school of fish here. Now, I can probably use the same
00:46technique here. But this one, there is a little more
00:49separation going on there. So we'll go look at our channels and try
00:52it that way. We see where we have some good separation
00:54like There its a little too muted its too much of a contrast going on there the
00:58green that's looking pretty good. The blue completely gone I'm going to go
01:03with the green one here I'm going to duplicate the green channel either a copy
01:06of the green and I'm going to go into my levels.
01:10That's where I'm going to start to really start to adjust this to get the effect
01:13that I want. So I'm going to bring my blacks in.
01:16Bring them way in. And I'm going to those mid-tones back up.
01:20And same thing with my lights. I'm going to bring them back up.
01:22I want those to be nice and bright in there.
01:24Just like that. And click OK.
01:27Now, I got some little areas in here which I definitely do not want to have.
01:31So, I'm going to get a nice small brush, and I'm just going to paint those out.
01:35Make sure my (UNKNOWN) is up to 100% and just going to get rid of some of those
01:39unwanted little pieces in htere and there and maybe this little guy under there.
01:44Get rid of all this, this we can just select this way and go ahead and fill it
01:48with the black. So, now I want to bring this out even more.
01:52So, I'm going to go back into my Levels again and push those whites even further.
01:56Now, just playing with the whites and I'm going.
01:58Pushed them all the way forward so I could make sure I had those fish
02:01completely exposed and then using white I will go in there with my paintbrush and
02:04start to paint in these areas to make sure they get selected as well, I'll just
02:08go in there and just do a little touching here and there, it doesn't have to be
02:11perfect because these fish are going to be further back and our single fish over
02:15there, we're just going to kind of bring all these things in just to kind of
02:18finish that fish off. Then that we have that we can now go back
02:26to RBG and load that channel. All right, and bring it down here and see
02:30where we're going, and we're going to take those guys and bring them into our
02:34scene as well. There they are.
02:36All right, so now we look at our layers and we have our fish.
02:40So, what we're going to do is take the little school of fish and make it much smaller.
02:44We'll go into our transform and we just bring way down, and we'll kind of just
02:47let him float there for now. And then we're going to take this guy in
02:52the foreground, and we're going to kind of put him in there and make him a little smaller.
02:56He's a little too big right now. Just make him a little bit smaller.
02:59Just so he's got a little presence there. So there's a little fish.
03:02It's starting to look like there's life down there.
03:05In the next movie what we're going to do is create an entire school of fish
03:08swirling through this whole thing which will provide the food for what these guys
03:12are looking for.
03:15

Creating a fish brush
00:00So now what we're going to do is to populate our ocean with a school of fish
00:03just swimming through this area that these little predators here are feeding on.
00:10So how are we going to create a whole school of fish?
00:13Well, what we're going to do is going to use a brush.
00:16So, I did a little search on the web and I found this little quartet of fish, dead fish.
00:23But it's okay, we're going to bring it back to life.
00:25So, what I did is, taken the one in front, it's the only one that's complete.
00:29And I created a little path for it, so I'm going to turn it into a selection.
00:32Then I'd send it over to a new layer via Cut.
00:36So now going to take that guy and put him in the middle here and, I'm going to
00:41rotate him. Rotate him so he's nice and straight on
00:45like that there you go there's our little fish.
00:48Now for the background go see that background going to go ahead and just
00:51fill the background with the white. And there's our fish.
00:55Now what I'm going to do is I'm going to make him a little darker, because the
00:57darker the tones, the more opaque that brush is going to be.
01:00So I'm going to go into my Levels here where I'm going to darken, darken our
01:04fish considerably. There we go.
01:07Just want to have a little detail on him, just a, a little tiny bit.
01:11I'm going to click OK. So, there's our fish.
01:14So what I'm going to do is I'm going to select the fish and define it as a brush.
01:21We'll call it Fish, and that's it. That's all we need to do.
01:25We can come back over to our underwater scene now, and we'll create a layer above
01:28all these guys. Way up here.
01:31All right. Now, I haven't named any of my layers
01:33along the way. I strongly suggest that you do name your layers.
01:38But I don't want to waste your time. By naming them but you'd name them that
01:41way you'll know exactly which ones they are.
01:44Now look at my paint brush here. And I'm going to pick that brush.
01:47Which will appear as the last brush. There's my fish.
01:51See, (UNKNOWN) now does that. So, what were going to do there.
01:55Is going to my Brush Engine, where we're going to modify this Brush so it does
01:59exactly what I want it to do. And I'm going to bring up the Spacing to
02:04give a little spacing to our fish, just like that.
02:08Then I'm going to go into my Shape Dynamics, where I am going to let's bring
02:11the angle down. And the size.
02:15We got unpercent Jitter. And what were going to do is set up a minimum.
02:19So we don't get to small. But that's good.
02:21That's a nice variation right there. The Angle Jitter.
02:24Were going to do ever so slight, shift. Just a little bit.
02:28A few of them will not won't all be facing the exact same direction.
02:31A little bit of shift. But we are going to play here.
02:34The control we are going to set to direction.
02:37That way the fish are going to follow in the direction that our brush stroke goes.
02:43Now we're going to do a little scattering.
02:45Now scattering, we have, just bring it in a little more like that.
02:49Maybe open it up, it's a little spacing in there.
02:51And the count you can bring the count down.
02:53let's see with a two. That looks good.
02:56All right, then were going to do a little color dynamics.
02:59Apply the per tip. So each tip is going to have a different
03:01color based on the foreground and background.
03:04With no hue Jitter. But we will have a saturation Jitter,
03:07just a little. And brightness Jitter, a bit.
03:10All right? We don't want the huge Jitter because
03:13we're going to depend on the colors of our foreground and background.
03:16And the saturation, and the well, saturation we're going to bring down.
03:20because, basically we're going to be working with muted grays.
03:23And then we're going to work with brightness, so that some fish will be
03:26brighter than others. So, right now we have a black.
03:29So I'm going to pick a nice, deep grey like that for my foreground.
03:33And for my background, I'm going to pick a much lighter grey.
03:37About like that. Not too much lighter.
03:39So we have a, enough of a difference there.
03:40We can test a brush to see how it's going to look.
03:43And we go across there we see that there's our fish so far.
03:45So, now that we've seen that what I'm going to do is I'm going to make the
03:48brush a little smaller. And now that we see how they fit in
03:52there, and let's just do one more test. There it is, our little school of fish.
03:57That's looking pretty good. So what I'm going to do is now I'm
04:00going to go in here and start applying our little fish.
04:03And where I'm going to apply them is possibly well, let's put em on top, for now.
04:07So I'm going to go in here, and I'm going to just draw a little swirl of fish.
04:11And it's just kind of traveling around, see?
04:13It's just creating this nice little swirl of fish.
04:16And I'm going to get a another layer right on top.
04:20And I'm going to make my brush a little smaller.
04:23And put a second batch right behind 'em. There we go.
04:26Now this one we might just add a few more fish to it.
04:30Just so we have all these little fish, just all coming down along this area here.
04:34And here they're going to kind of, kind of spin out.
04:37The, they going to panic because these other fish are coming into play here.
04:40So now that we have them in there, what I might want to do is
04:45Go in there and colorize these. So they are in two separate layers, now
04:48let's, take that second layer and put it right back here, so the bigger fish are
04:51in the front. All right?
04:54And, now we're going to go in there and just, give these guys a little tinge of
04:57the blue. Now we have that same blue that we
05:00applied to our boat. Could do is just go ahead and duplicate
05:04that layer. Duplicate that layer, and, unclip it.
05:09Right, just dragging it up on top here. All right?
05:11And what we're going to do is we're going to clip it to our layers of fish.
05:16We have two layers so we're going to duplicate it twice.
05:19Put the other one on top, and we'll clip it there.
05:23And we'll clip it there. And now our fish has those same blue
05:27tones showing through. They have the same opacity as I did to
05:30the boat so now we see all of the little fish there and what we might do is to
05:34take this. a little school of fish and see this is
05:38where I should have named them right. But we know it's right there.
05:41And we're going to move those guys down into this negative area here where they
05:44are about to attack our school of fish that are just swimming by.
05:47And then our big fish we're going to bring him in front so that these no
05:50longer, and not clipped, let's unto that. Bring them up.
05:55On top of everybody there we go. Way up there.
05:58Unless we turn that clip. Right there.
06:01Bring that clip back. All right, so now that fish is in front.
06:04And we might even want to move him a little bit in front of that school of
06:07fish that's just swimming by. And there we see that we now have our
06:11completed scene. Where we have some life streaming
06:15through, a boat that died a long time ago, and then the ocean floor and the
06:19surface up above.
06:22

Adding rays of lights
00:00For the final touch, we're going to add some light coming down from up above.
00:05So what I'm going to do is I'm going to create another layer here.
00:09And this layer using a brush and white, I'm going to draw a couple of big spots here.
00:15Little spots just like that. Now we're going to give them a filter.
00:22I'm going to go into my Radio blur. Now it's going to be set up as I had it before.
00:27Set to Zoom mode, which is the way it looks.
00:30Now I'm going to have it center the effect from way up there center top, and
00:34the full amount of 100. And click OK.
00:40going to create these little long little spots like that, I'm going to do it
00:43again, I'm going to apply it a second time.
00:46Make it even longer. And now they're not that strong, so what
00:49I'm going to do is I'm going to duplicate that layer so we have two of them.
00:53Now I'm going to take one and merge it down into the other.
00:57And as a final touch I'm going to go into there into my Transform tools.
01:01And I'm going to bring them up towards the top, and bring them way down towards
01:06the bottom, like that. And what I'm going to do is, I'm going to
01:10put 'em behind the fish. Put 'em back here.
01:13It's just these little rays of light that are just coming down from up above.
01:18And that will complete the entire scene of being under water.
01:21And maybe I want to move them up just a little bit so they're closer to the surface.
01:26There we go. There's these nice rays of light coming
01:29down from up above.

8. Staircase to the Tree
Introduction
00:00This dreamscape is going to get a little surreal.
00:02I'll take a really bizarre tree and an old entrance from a castle and a staircase.
00:10We're going to create in 3D. Add a guy, just hiking, background, and a
00:13sky, and combine all these images to create a surreal image of a man standing
00:18in front of a very strange little habitat for some strange little gremlins.
00:25
Collapse this transcript
Compositing the sky and land
00:00Now, this image that we see here, a close up of a parched dry lake is going to
00:05serve as the Ground Plane. And right behind it, it's an image of a
00:11sky, really intense sun setting kind of sky over Orlando.
00:18So these two images are going to be combined.
00:21So first, let's work on the land here. So in the land, I'm going to double-click
00:25on the background, to convert it into a layer.
00:29We're going to call it land. So now that it's a layer, I'm going to go
00:34in there and hit the Command+T to bring up the Transform tools, what I'm going to do
00:38is bring it down to about there . That's going to be the horizon line way
00:45back there. Then I'll take my sky here, and I'm
00:48going to drag it right in. And now that it's in there, I can kind of
00:52get rid of this sky. And what I'm going to do here is I'm
00:56going to bring up the Transform tools, but first I'm going to put that in the
01:00back and call it sky. So I'm going to bring up the Transform
01:04tools, Command+T, and I don't see it because this file is much bigger than the
01:09original file. So, I'm going to hit Command+0 to bring me
01:13into a full view of the area of that image that I'm going to go there and modify.
01:18So I'm going to go in there, and from the center out, I'm going to hold on my
01:22Option key and my Shift key, from the center out, I'm going to shrink it down,
01:26to fall into that space in there. Now that I've got the width and the
01:32height, I'm going to go in there and start just kind of condensing it like this.
01:38And pressing it into place, and bring it up just till I got just about the area of
01:43the beginning of the sky there. The area of the horizon.
01:49Move it over into place, and there it is. So I'm going to hit OK.
01:54So now, we see that the light is kind of matching because the sun is somewhere
01:58over there. And the shadows on the crackled dirt down
02:02here are on this side as well. So, our lights work.
02:07If they didn't, I'd have to go in there and flip one of these so that the light
02:10source would match. Now, the horizon right now is very sharp.
02:15So, what I'm going to do is, I'm going to give the land plane a mask.
02:18And I'm going to give a tiny little gradient going from white to black, right
02:23in here, a tiny gradient, right in there. So I just get a little softening of the
02:30horizon back there. So it's not so hard.
02:33Maybe we'll just make it a little less, even less.
02:37There we go, just a little hint of a softening of the background, way in the back.
02:43So now, I'm going to do one more thing to this land here, I'll create a layer above
02:47it and this layer, I'm going to create a gradient going from black to transparent.
02:53I'm going to throw it right into there, right in there like that.
02:57So it's going to create this darker tone back there like that.
03:01I'm going to clip it with the layer of the land, just like that so at this
03:05darkness, as it gets further back, I'll set that to Multiply and bring down it's
03:09Opacity considerably just so I can darken the horizon so it looks, gives that sense
03:14as even further back in space. And there's the beginnings of our scene.
03:21This is going to serve as the background for the story we're about to tell.
03:25
Collapse this transcript
Selecting the tree and compositing
00:00So now that our background is complete, we're now going to start adding the
00:03elements of the story. And one of them is this massive tree.
00:07Now, I just happen to have taken a shot of a tree down in Morro Bay, big gnarly
00:12tree right here. This is the one that's going to serve as
00:16our tree. Now, using the technique I've used in
00:18quite a few of the other movies, I'm going to go in there and outline it in an
00:21alpha channel, which we see right here. And when we look at the other guys, you
00:26see that I just simply traced over the tree, the limbs that I wanted, it only
00:29has to go so high, because this is going to be encompassing the entire image right
00:32in there. And I'm kind of rough down here, kind of
00:37rough in this area here, because that's going to have a mask to have it blend
00:40into the existing scene. So, what I'm going to do now is I'm
00:44going to load that Channel. And, I'm going to take this guy and
00:48composite it into my background, right there, like that.
00:53There's the tree in place. So, now I'm going to move into position
00:56where I want him, right about let's say about there and let's move this in, there
01:00we go. There's our tree in position.
01:04Now, like I said, we're going to make this blend a little better even though it
01:07looks fairly good down there right now. I just want to get a little better blend,
01:12so I'm just going to go in there and give this a Layer Mask.
01:15And that Layer Mask, using Black, I'm going to very lightly go in, let me, make
01:19sure I got a Soft Brush, and I'm going to bring down the Opacity right a bit, and
01:23I'm going to just very lightly, I'm going to make the brush a little small
01:26and very lightly going to go in here and just kind of soften some of these little
01:30blended areas right in there into the Mask.
01:36I'm in the mask and I got a paint with black, that would help.
01:39So there we go. So, I start to just blend some of these
01:41guys, that they are just going to melt right into the existing landscape and
01:45start to just look like it is part of the overall scene.
01:50There we go, were just going right into the dirt there like that.
01:53And then with this guide I have, I'm just going to go right into the ground.
01:56So you can see, were just making it disappear like, it's melting into the
01:59dirt below. There's our little pieces and there now
02:03our tree is in position. Now it's going to need some shading, but
02:07were going to do that at the end, that's why I'm going to add all the necessary shading.
02:11We got some basic shading which is pretty good because it's fairly dark on the side
02:15lights on the side like our existing light source, so that helps.
02:19But we do want to add some drama like we did to the ground, we'll add some drama
02:22to the tree later on.
02:24

Making a 3D staircase
00:00So in our storyline here, what's going to happen is there is going to be a
00:04staircase going up to this, little entrance up here, where some kind of a
00:08hobbit or a gnome lives. So we're going to create the staircase.
00:14Now, you might say, well, that's going to require some work.
00:17Not really. Photoshop does have 3D capabilities.
00:21So I'm going to create in a totally separate file here.
00:23I created a regular square file here, and I'm going to turn on my Grid, because
00:28being a staircase, it's fairly symmetrical.
00:33So using my Pen tool, I'm going to start down here.
00:36And I click to half way, and then over, and then up, across, over, there you go
00:41see how I'm just creating this staircase going all the way up to the top.
00:49You're thinking oh I'm going to have to sit here and watch this whole thing.
00:52No, I already have one made. See, isn't it great to be prepared?
00:57So what I'm going to do is now, is I'm just going to turn off my Grid.
01:01I don't need to see it anymore. I have my staircase that I created and it
01:04is very important that I close it off. When I got to the top here, I gave a
01:07little extra space. I came down and closed it off.
01:10So it's one complete path. So now, I've got my path there and what
01:15I'm going to do is, I go to my 3D menu. And over here I'm going to say new 3D
01:21extrusion from selected path. So I'm going to select that.
01:26So, this little window comes up and says you're about to create a 3D layer.
01:30Would you like to switch to a 3D workspace?
01:31Now, the workspaces are up here. Where you can control your own, how's it
01:36going to be arranged and so on. Not just say, go ahead, yes.
01:41That way it's going to have all the necessary tools that I want.
01:43And you notice that it created a shape, based on my 3D pound.
01:49So what I'm going to do is I'm going to rotate it.
01:51Just so I could see it about like that. Right now, it's a really big staircase
01:54and I want it to be a narrow staircase. So what I'm going to do is, I'm going to
01:58go over here To my shape. This is the background.
02:01That's the shape itself. You notice that when I selected that I
02:04get this little controller here, which allows me to control certain things.
02:07Like move it up and down and do that, or rotate it, or all kinds of things that I
02:11could do to this thing. Here's a rotation right there, see?
02:14I can rotate at different angles. And so on so what I'm going to do now is
02:18I'm going to go over here and you see on the properties there's the exclusion
02:22depth so I'm going to make it narrower by just bringing this slider in.
02:27A nice narrow depth like that right now I'm going to take my little Move tool
02:31here and move it over. There we go, so it's like that.
02:37Now my angle, the angle of that I want to view this at, is very similar, has to be
02:41exactly like the scene that I'm creating. So I'm going to go over to the camera,
02:47right here, the camera itself, and with this tool, I can change the view.
02:53That my camera has so I'm going to put it about like that and I'm going to bring it
02:56down a little bit. Bring or bring it up so that my camera's
03:00just about like that and that's fairly close to what I want maybe a little bit
03:04more of a rotation there we go. There.
03:07Now, the lighting you can see the shadow that's being cast back here, because I
03:11have it set to cast a shadow and a, see right there cast shadows.
03:17What I want to do now is I want to change the light source to be from down here.
03:22Because that's the way it is in my scene, that's where the sun is setting.
03:26So I'm going to go to my light, see infinite light.
03:29Now, I can have additional lights like spotlights and stuff that I can create
03:32right here. But I'm just going to work with the
03:34ambient light. There are no other light sources except
03:36that ambient light and the setting sun. So, I get this little symbol here which
03:41represents the light source, kind of like the sun.
03:45So I'm going to take this little point right here, and move it.
03:48And you notice how it's changing the light source?
03:50See how it's changing the way we see this thing?
03:53I'm going to just change this so that my light source is coming from down there.
03:57Just like the setting sun. And you can see what it's done to our staircase.
04:01Then what I'm going to do is I'm going to go to my extrusion material.
04:06That's this stuff. This part right here.
04:09They are different materials. That's the material that this staircase
04:12is made of. And again the properties changed, to
04:15materials, because I'm right here in the material layer.
04:18So I could pick one of the presets or I can create my own.
04:22But I'm going to go ahead and pick one of these presets and there's quite a few of
04:24them here, so I'm going to use this guy right here.
04:27Click, and you can see how we created texture to my surface there.
04:32So now what I want to do is I want to modify that texture a little bit.
04:36So I might want to go in and let's just go right into here and I can click on
04:40this which gives me the colors that its using and I can go into maybe pick a
04:44darker tone. Maybe a color like this, whatever.
04:50But I'm going to mess around with the way this actual texture is created.
04:57So in the next movie, what were going to do is go in there and change those
05:00textures and get it ready to be rendered.
05:03

Rendering stairs
00:00Now that our basic staircase is ready to go, I'm going to go in there and change
00:03the colors. This looks like, well, I would want it to
00:07look more like concrete or stone. So here's my background, there's my
00:10extrusion material. It's, it's all the way it is.
00:14I could make some changes, reflections, and shine.
00:17But what I want to do is I want to go into layers, right here, Layers panel.
00:20And my layers right there. I got Capsule Defuse.
00:24I'm going to double-click on that. That's going to bring me into a totally
00:28separate file, which is the actual material that, that texture is made from.
00:34And as you can see it has this, turn off that color part.
00:38And it's got this little effect here. Now, I could just dump this completely.
00:43I don't need this thing up here, or I could go in there and just add that
00:47gradient to it. But change it.
00:50So, I'm going to double-click on the Gradient.
00:52And, and it's going to bring me into, double-clicking up here, the Regular
00:55Gradient Editor. Whenever I want, I can go in there and
00:59start changing these colors. So, I'm going to change this to a black.
01:03Let's go to foreground color which currently is black.
01:06And this, I'm just going to double-click on it to bring me into the Color Picker
01:10and I'm going to choose a deep gray, like that, and click OK.
01:15And click OK, and there you can see that's now giving me this nice little
01:19gradient on top of this, completes the effect.
01:23But now when I close this and I save it, you see that the staircase automatically
01:27renders to that new color and all the effects that I've added throughout.
01:33So, now comes time to render this. Rendering is going to take all the
01:37information and make it look as clean as possible.
01:40And to do that, you have a quickie right here, right there, that little icon under
01:43Properties you click on that and it's going to start to render.
01:48And now it looks like it's moving fast. But it is going to slow down.
01:50See, now it's starting to slow down. It's going to take a while to render it.
01:54The higher the res, the longer it's going to take.
01:56So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to just hit Escape to stop the render, for now.
02:01When the render is finished, what you do you come up the layers and you say
02:04Rasterize the 3D Layer. That's going to turn it into a regular
02:09little pixel layer, okay? That's the layer that we will then import
02:13into our overall image, which I already did.
02:16See? I already have it in there.
02:19So, I brought it in and I shrunk it into position and I put it exactly where I
02:22want it. Now, there's going to be some additional
02:25modifications that I need to do. We'll get to those in a little while.
02:28So, here we got the little staircase in place.
02:31I'm going to kind of move it over just a little like that.
02:34That's where it's going to live, right about there.
02:38And maybe right there. There we go.
02:39Now, you see how this stuff here is kind of like getting hidden or this stuff here
02:43looks very gnarly. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
02:47close that up. Let's turn off our staircase for a minute
02:50and let's get rid of this hole. That's a very disturbing looking hole.
02:54So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to clone.
02:56And just to be sure that I get it right, I'm going to clone on top of another
02:59blank layer here. I have all layers selected.
03:06So now, I'm going to go in here and start to clone.
03:07So, I'm going to say I'm going to clone from right about here and I'm going to
03:10start to clone into that little space there.
03:15See what it's doing? And now, I'm going to just kind of drag
03:17from here, get another little branch happening there.
03:20And then, I'm going to just kind of pull from, let's say, right here.
03:24and kind of fill that up with that space right in there, we're kind of filling
03:28that up. See our tree stump doesn't have that big
03:31hole anymore. It might not look perfect, but we're
03:33going to fix it in a second. It's not that one.
03:37Let's go with this one right here. There we go.
03:39So, we've got this nice little, ideas and imperfection because we can see they're
03:42very similar in nature. So, let's get rid of that one, and let's
03:47close that off. Now, when we put our staircase back in,
03:50there's our staircase. And there we can see that there, we've
03:54covered that little space back there. Now, we're going to do additional things
03:58to it. We're going to add some shadows and all
04:00kinds of stuff. So in the next movie, what we're going to
04:02do is bring in the doorway that these stairs are leading to.
04:05
Collapse this transcript
Retouching the doorway
00:00Now we're going to create the doorway. A nice little door that is in this tree
00:04where that gnome lives. So I have a file here taken in a castle
00:09in Germany somewhere. it's not a great shot, obviously it's
00:15been badly cropped, missing a little corner here.
00:18This is modern day light over here. all we basically really need is this
00:23entrance here, and part of this side. Now we need to get rid of this wall.
00:29And we need to rebuild where it's missing.
00:31So what I'm going to do right off the bat is go and increase the canvas size.
00:36So it's the width is 13, so we'll go to 16.
00:40And put the existing image on the left. Click OK.
00:43That gives me plenty of room there in which to work.
00:47So I'm going to get in real close. Real close here, let's just get real
00:50close into this area here. And I'm going to kind of rebuild that
00:54little arch. Now we see the arch there, it is kind of
00:56straight on but it is got a nice little curve to it.
00:59So what I'm going to do is I'm going to do is I'm going to use my pen tool and
01:02starting right there I'm going to kind of create that same kind of a curve that I
01:05want, right about something like that. Its going to jut out just about like
01:11that, right? There its going to go straight back.
01:14Now I see my angle's here, so now let's put this right on that line and then move
01:18this guy down. So that it matches that line right there.
01:22So there's my shape that I'm going to want.
01:25Right there like that. So I come over here and we close it off.
01:30Let's hold down the option key when we close it off, so we get a hard edge point
01:33there, and we move that in position like that.
01:38Then I'm going to create another path, right here.
01:41And this path is going to be that little lip, that we see there.
01:46Right there like that. And then finally, this guy, which we're
01:50going to go in and we're going to kind of, let's see what it looks like on this side.
01:56It has a little curve of its own. Actually, looking at the stone now
02:00there's a straight up. Yup, that's that little piece there, this
02:03is going to be straight up, so were going to change that right and the bat and make
02:06that straight. There we go, that's straight up like that.
02:11Then this guy that we started here were going to go in and were going to give it
02:14a little curve, just a little curve that goes right into there.
02:18And this one could go a little, below. And close it off.
02:23So those three paths are going to help us rebuild the wall that's missing here.
02:27So, and let's put them into a layer. Let's create a layer where we're going to
02:32create this effect. Now I got my clone tool, here's my clone tool.
02:36And I'm going to say use all layers. And first thing I'll do is go in here and
02:41take this one path, this first path. And let's just get that right on the line there.
02:47There it is, right on that line. Perfect.
02:51Turn it into a selection. So I go to my.
02:53Let's switch back to our, not our 3D, but back to our Essentials where we have our
02:57basic paths. So there we go.
03:00So you can see I've tried these before. But here's, here's my new path.
03:04I'm going to turn then to a selection. There we go.
03:06So were going to turn this. Just save that work path.
03:10And there we are. So what I'm going to do is.
03:13I just need to fill this area in. So what I'm going to do.
03:15Is take my clone tool. And I'm going to clone from right here.
03:19And then I'm going to match it up. Right there.
03:22There's that match up. Right in there.
03:24And I'm going to start to draw. And there you can see that we've finished
03:29off that little piece that was broken off.
03:31So now, we're going to take that second path, or actually let's take this last
03:35one, okay, and we're going to turn that into a selection.
03:39And I'm going to pick this up dark, right here, we're going to go right at the
03:42edge, right there. Come over here and match it, and fill
03:47that up. Now it's okay if we go a little over,
03:51because of the fact that the final one is going to be this one here.
03:55Now let's get this right on the line where we want it, and we turn that one
03:59into a selection. We now pick up this color here.
04:04So, let's get our clone tool and we'll just pick it up, and again, I'm finding a
04:07nice little seam like right there. Match up that seam right about there, and
04:13start to draw. You select, there we go now we've
04:17completed that side. Now we head down here, where we've lost
04:21part of our wall. So, what we're going to do here is we're
04:25going to kind of clone from another piece of the wall, right here.
04:30So I'm going to clone. Pick up that seam right there and then
04:34kind of match it up here and start to draw.
04:37And there you can see that I'm just kind of, completing my wall.
04:40Come down, and we're going to go in there and, and and rough this up a little more,
04:44so they kind of match a little better. Well, there we got the basic shape going
04:50right through there like that. Now, I'm going to go and reduce my opacity.
04:55Bring it down to about a, 30. And then I'm going to clone these dark
04:58tones into here. And let's get this edge a little smaller,
05:02or a little softer, rather. And I'm going to just kind of very lightly.
05:07Dab in these areas here. So that they kind of match up, our tones.
05:12And have them match in. So it starts to look a little more uniform.
05:15Now were going to complete this little piece of stone here.
05:19So again, I'm going to clone from right here.
05:22From this edge. Match up that edge right about there.
05:25And go across. And now we can bring our opacity back up
05:30to 100%, and I'm going to just completely fill this up and let's get this guy right
05:34in there. There we go and we start to fill all this up.
05:40Right there like that. There we can see that we're rebuilding
05:44the wall that got damaged. Or built over and so on.
05:48And we got the basic doorway happening. And then this up here, well, let's get
05:54real close on that. And we see we got this little bottom edge
05:57that's just hiding our stone's piece there.
06:00So, what I'm going to do again is from the clone, I'm going to clone right here
06:03from that little corner right there and kind of match that corner up right there
06:07and start to draw. And there we can see that we're going to
06:11go in there and we're going to start to eliminate and we're a little off but
06:14that's okay we can start to fix that up. Let's pick from here and clone into there.
06:20There we go that's starting to fit a little better.
06:24There we go, we got that guy, and let's clone this guy into here.
06:28And let's pick it from that corner because that corner we have in place, and
06:32then we just fill that up. Now, the little pieces that are off no
06:36problem, we can fix those. It's just a question of getting there a
06:39little closer, and remember that this is a separate layer so I can go in there and
06:42select that little piece that we did and just kind of stretch it out.
06:48There we go, see, that's it, we filled that in.
06:50By just stretching it out to make it fit. So, now we're going to match the rest of
06:55the wall to make it look right. Now there's a seam going right through
06:58here, there's a seam right in there. So we're going to find the seam.
07:02This seam right there but we like these tones up here, so let's just pick up,
07:07tones from right up in that area. So I get my Clone tool and where that seam.
07:13And we'll match it up right in there. And we start to draw.
07:18Now we got a little bit of the top. No problem, because we're going to go in
07:20there and pick from different parts at a time.
07:23I can even pick from right here and kind of fill that up a little bit.
07:27A little too far. There we go.
07:29Let's just go and fill that in there. And then let's start bringing in from
07:33this wall. Now let's get the rest of that seam.
07:36Right in there. And we just go straight up.
07:40And clean that up. Now let's finish off that seam, right up
07:44in there. There.
07:47So now we can just go in and eliminate the rest of this little light structure here.
07:53And we'll pick in from different parts so that we don't get any sense of something
07:57being Bring that right in there.
08:00See how we finish that off? So, it doesn't start to look like there's
08:03a pattern in there. Like it doesn't look like it was, in
08:06fact, retouched. So I'm going to just grab this seam here.
08:10Match it up there and start to draw across.
08:12There, we've cleaned that all up. Now, here we've got another seam, so I
08:17click there and drop. And this is going to get rid of that
08:21little That little damage or ,or the little
08:24shadow in this case from the light source and when we pull back there we see that
08:27we have our completed doorway. Now in the next movie what we are going
08:32to do is select the doorway and composite it into our scene.
08:36
Collapse this transcript
Compositing the doorway
00:00So now we're going to composite the scene into our a overall scene.
00:03So I did the retouching in a separate layer so what we're going to do now is
00:06we're going to flatten the image. There we go flatten.
00:12Now I've created a path that ecompasses the entire doorway.
00:16This is what we're going to go and bring into the other scene.
00:19So, I'm going to take that path and make it a selection.
00:22And then we'll bring it into our scene, so I'm going to just take it and grab it
00:25and bring it in. Now it's much larger than our existing scene.
00:29So I'm going to bring up the transform by hitting Command+T, and then Command+0 to bring it
00:32to full view so I can see what I'm doing here.
00:36I'm going to hold down my Shift key to constrain the reduction, I'm going to
00:39shrink it way down to the size that I want.
00:42That's fairly close maybe a little smaller make it okay and let's go back to
00:46a Full View so we can see here exactly what we're getting.
00:50Pull back just a little bit there we go. So now my doorways facing in the wrong
00:55direction so let's go and call it Doorway.
01:00And we'll do a little Flip Horizontal on it.
01:04There it is. And now, I'm going to put it behind the staircase.
01:09I want it behind the staircase and I'm going to shrink it down some more.
01:15There, it's about the size of the actual staircase.
01:18Here we go. Something like that.
01:20And I'm going to rotate it a little bit, just a little bit.
01:23Get into shape there. Right about where I want it.
01:26Now, it's a little off as far as perspective is concerned.
01:29So what I'm going to do is I'm going to hold down my Command key and kind of change
01:32the perspective on the scene a little bit. It's getting more in line with what the
01:38staircase looks like. And now we'll make it a little smaller
01:42again, there we go. That's looking better.
01:44And we'll put it right about there, so that the staircase.
01:47Let's, let's do a little more distortion here.
01:49We'll kind of skew it down this way. There we go.
01:53That's looking a little better. And, we'll bring it, make it a little bit bigger.
01:59Just about like that. Let's make that happen.
02:02Now, I'm going to go in here, and let's just.
02:04kind of fit it in there, and we're going to do a little retouching here and there,
02:08just to make this all look really well. Now, this whole side here, it's a little
02:14off, so I'm going to get a little closer, and I'm going to select that side.
02:19do it with the good old Pen tool here. And I'm just going to go ahead and click
02:25away to select this entire side. There it is.
02:35Now, I'm going to go ahead and turn that path into a selection.
02:40And now I can distort this side the way I want it.
02:43Bring up the transform tools and I'm going to stretch it down like this.
02:48And that's giving me more of the kind of perspective that I'm looking for, right
02:52about like that. Okay, I might have to lift this up just a
02:55tad right there to let it fit in there. Right there, like that and that's looking
03:01fairly good. Close this up a little and that's
03:04starting to get the feel that I want. Make that happen.
03:08Reselect it and there's my doorway. Now, let's pull back a little bit.
03:14Now it's still a little large but, it's going to work.
03:17I'm going to go and rotate it just a slight bit.
03:21There we go, that's now working much better.
03:24All right, so I see that little bit of an angle, little better angle there.
03:30There we go. Now it's looking good.
03:32Just bring this down. Make that happen.
03:36There we are. So now I gotta go in here and make this
03:39blend into the tree. So what we're going to do is give that a mask.
03:45In that mask, we're going to go in and start to blend it into the tree.
03:50So I'm going to get my brush and I'm going to make it much smaller.
03:53And I've got black and what I'm going to do is I'm going to just kind of slowly
03:57start to paint in into this area. Make sure I got 100% opacity and just
04:02kind of paint in so that it starts to blend into the tree.
04:06Just the way I'd like it. Right in there like that.
04:09Okay. See anything in this side?
04:14But now our little doorway is going right into the tree itself.
04:19which is kind of just go right in there and get this all going, following the
04:23shape of the tree. Now, there's a little darkness in the
04:27tree there. So let's go back to the Tree layer and
04:30Clone that. Let's clone that dark out.
04:33So I'm going to get a much smaller clone, and clone that area out.
04:39There we go. So now it's fitting in nice and neat.
04:41Now, that side is also very lit. That is a little too light.
04:45So, still got that path from before? Yep, there it is, but I need to adjust it
04:49a little bit, so I am going to go in there and just, make some adjustments to it.
04:54cause it was redone. And put that in place, that's fairly close.
05:02And I'll make that a selection. And then, just so we have a little more
05:05control over this, I'm going to do it in a layer above.
05:10I put in a layer right above it here. I'm going to get a dark tone like a black
05:14and just fill that layer with black. And I'm going to clip it with the doorway
05:19just like that. Put it in Multiply mode and then reduce
05:22the opacity considerably so now we have that darkness on that side of the doorway.
05:29Still have the detail but now it's nice and dark.
05:32The building is now starting to look complete.
05:35In the next movie what we'll do is add our little spectator right here.
05:40And the last movie we're going to add all the shading that's going to complete this
05:44whole scene. And do some additional changes that we
05:47can see necessary once everything is in place.

Selecting and compositing a person
00:00So now I'm going to get this spectator and put him into the scene.
00:04I chose one of my hiking shots. And there's my hiking buddies.
00:07And that's my nephew Mark. Other nephew Bill, my friend Chip.
00:11Bill is going to serve as the hiker. Or the explorer or whatever you want to
00:16call him who just happened upon this weird scene.
00:19Now I'm going to choose him with a path. I created a path for him.
00:23It's the easiest way to, and quickest to separate 'em properly without having to
00:26worry about all kind of selection processes.
00:29I just created a path. Which I'm going to turn into a selection.
00:34And what that selected, I'm going to drag him in to our scene.
00:39And it just happens to be the right lighting to so that works really well.
00:43I'm going to go in here and I'm going to shrink him down a bit.
00:45Holding down my Shift key to constrain it and I'm going to shrink him down to the
00:49size that I want. And about that size is good.
00:53I'm going to put him right about here. That's where he's going to be standing,
00:56right about there. So now, I'm going to hit OK and I am
00:59going to darken him a little bit. I want it to be a little more dramatic so
01:03I'm going to do it with levels. So I want some of those dark tones to get
01:06a little darker, a little more dramatic, right there like that.
01:09And I might even go in there with my Burn tool and just, kind of, hit certain areas.
01:14Let's go into our mid-tones here and just hit certain areas to make them a little darker.
01:18Right along these sides here, like that, there you go, just in there, under his
01:22arm, just a little touch right there just to make him a little darker.
01:26Now he's got a casted shadow. So what I'm going to do.
01:29Is, I'm going to give him. Back in my layers.
01:32I'm going to give him a Drop Shadow. Go in there and say, Drop Shadow.
01:36Click Ok. I'm going to call it Person.
01:41And then, I'm going to separate that Drop Shadow from him.
01:45So I go over here in Layer Styles and say Create Layers.
01:48Now this just tells you, you could see what it says.
01:51I usually click on don't show again but I got to leave it on there for now.
01:56So there, person's drop shadow. It's a separate layer so I can select
02:00that layer. And I'm looking at the angles of my
02:03shadows throughout the scene so I have to conform to that.
02:08So I'm going to do is I'm going to go in there and I'm going to transform that
02:11shadow so it matches that same direction. going to bring this down here and bring
02:16this down to here. So, he's going to have this shadow.
02:19And it's going to have to be a little more this way.
02:22So there it is. There's his shadow that he's casting on
02:25this scene. So we gotta, feet in place, put that in
02:28place, and there's this shadow. We'll make it nice and long.
02:33Let's lengthen this one here. So he gets a nice long shadow.
02:38Now, we might have to go in there and do some retouching to this shadow, but you
02:41get the general idea of where he's being placed.
02:45So, let's bring this down and bring this over just so we get a nice looking shadow.
02:51Click OK. Now, looking at the way he's standing,
02:53I'd seen his arm is out, so, somehow it seems like the arm should be out.
02:57So let's go in here and just look at just that layer, just the shadow layer.
03:01So what I'm going to do is I'm going to come in here and I'm going to add to this.
03:06I'm going to get my Clone tool, and I'm going to say Clone from here at all
03:09times, so don't align, align the samples. Just click from here and I'm going to
03:13just say, choose the current layer. I'm going to kind of add the arm that
03:16he's got bent over here. He's got this arm that's just kind of
03:20folded into place here. Just going to go in there and add the arm
03:24that's sticking out. It doesn't have to be perfect because
03:27again, you've got to realize that it's an elongated shadow.
03:31So when we go and look at the rest there and we see that now this arm here is
03:34casting that appropriate shadow there. Now, I might want to add a little more
03:39tone into this area here which we can easily do.
03:43And then just bring them in and the same thing with this leg.
03:47Let's just close it off so we got a nice full looking kind of a shadow.
03:50Might want to add a couple little tones here.
03:52And what I'm doing now is I'm just kind of roughing it up a little bit.
03:56Just to kind of make it look a little more authentic and maybe make the head a
03:59little larger. So there it is, he's now in position.
04:04Now in the next and final movie what we're going to do is add all the little
04:07details that are going to make the staircase look like a fence and so on.
04:12And the drama to the tree. All the proper shading that's going to
04:16make this thing really come to life.
04:18
Collapse this transcript
Adding shadows
00:00So now come the finishing touches that will make this thing look real.
00:03Well, for one thing the staircase could use a little more modifying just to make
00:06it fit better. So I'm going to bring in the staircase
00:10and I hit Command+T and I'm just going to hold down the Command key to distort this.
00:15Then I'm going to try to bring this up a little bit into here, just like that.
00:20And we'll move it over just a little. There we go.
00:22So now it kind of fits more into that little socket there.
00:26And it also fits into the doorway above. Click OK.
00:30Now, I'm going to take this staircase and I'm going to give a, a little mask.
00:35And in that mask, what I'm going to do is I'm just going to go in and paint away so
00:38that it starts to look like it's going into this tree.
00:44Just like so. Now it's following the kind of the shape
00:48of the tree itself. Now looking at the tree, there's some
00:51funny stuff going on in there. So what we could do now is go to our tree
00:55layer and with that clone tool, right there, which is go in and clone this tone
01:00right into the staircase. Now, it's not taking it, we're in current
01:07layer Line sample, and let's see what's going on.
01:12Okay, we're in the tree, and it's not the tree there's this little retouch are
01:17right there. That's where we're going to do it.
01:21So, I got the all layers, and we're bringing this dark tone right into there.
01:26There we go. See?
01:27There we go. You got to make sure you're in the right
01:30layer when you're working. All right so now, now that we have that
01:33what I'm going to do is I'm going to turn the staircase into the selection.
01:37Go to the Staircase layer , which is right there, and I'm going to turn it to selection.
01:44Then a whole new layer, say right behind there on the tree, I'm going to create a
01:48new layer in front of that retouched area, create a new layer and fill that
01:52with black. All right so now what I'm going to do with
01:58that is I'm going to do a little flip horizontal on it and this is going to
02:02become the basis for the shadow of the staircase it self.
02:08So I'm going to go on here and I'm going to start to warp this.
02:11And I'm going to take these corners here. I'm just going to bring this guy way over.
02:16To this way. And let's just move the whole thing over.
02:19So it starts to get this little bit of a little shape in here.
02:23Okay, so were going to start getting this.
02:25And it's going to kind of wrap around. I'm going to have it start wrapping
02:28around the stair case, right here. And then down here it's going to wrap around.
02:33And then it's going to come around. And just wrapping around this whole area
02:37in here. Now, we click OK.
02:41And then we're going to complete that shape.
02:43I'm just going to bring this whole thing all the way over.
02:47Let's get a, a, a little lasso tool. And right from this edge here I'm
02:51going to just kind of connect it to there.
02:54And fill that area with black. So there.
02:57Now we've got this nice shadow happening there, which I'm going to reduce in opacity.
03:01So it's just like all the other shadows throughout this whole scene here, okay.
03:07Now the side of the staircase itself. So we'll go to that staircase, let's go
03:12to some. And let's start to say that these are
03:15shadows, we'll say shadow. And then the staircase itself, what I'm
03:18going to do is I'm going to kind of darken some of these areas in here.
03:21I'm going to go in there and say, give me my shadows and start to darken some of
03:26these areas just to make it fit more in to space there, just like that.
03:31Now the Actual a shatter that we created I'm going to give it a mask and in in
03:35that mask I'm going to just kind of very lightly actually not even give it a mask
03:39what I want to do is just blur it just a little bit a little Gaussian Blur just to
03:42soften it up just a little bit. Just a (UNKNOWN) little bit like that,
03:49and then there's some parts that are showing up over here, let's get rid of
03:53those, we don't want those. Now, the building, the doorway here is
03:57going to cast its own shadow, so we're going to have to go in there and create
04:00that shadow, but that we're going to do above the tree itself.
04:05So, here, in a layer above the tree, and above that retouching right there, we're
04:08going to say another shadow. Shadow of building and we're getting
04:14close so we can see what's going to happen here.
04:19And right here I'm going to draw using my lasso I'm going to kind of draw a little
04:23shape its going to go just like that and follow this whole thing right here.
04:32Just like that. And I'm going to fill that, with black.
04:36And I'm going to clip that, with the tree.
04:40So it's going to be confined to the area of the tree.
04:43I put it in multiply mode, and bring down its opacity so the tree will show through.
04:48There we're getting that shadow there. Now the shadows that we're going to need
04:52are the shadows and features of the tree itself.
04:55So that I'm going to do with a burn tool. I'm going to go in here and set up my
04:58midtones and I'm going to start playing around with edge of this tree here.
05:03We'll get a little closer and I'm going just start to go into the tree right here
05:07and start to darken This side, because remember it is dark on that side, and here.
05:14And then here, and then we're going to kind of really emphasize some of these
05:17tones in here. All right, there we go.
05:20And then we got that little, retouch area.
05:23Let's just darken that guy a little, right there.
05:26And let's go back and continue with this, with the tree.
05:30Add some more tones in there, just darken it some more, darken on this side.
05:34Darken this entire side over here. That's all out of our field of vision.
05:39Darken these up here. This guy could be very dark, because he's
05:42behind this big limb here, which I'm going to go ahead and darken that as well.
05:47That's going to have its own shadow right in there, and there we can see that we're
05:51starting to get all of these nice dramatic tones to our tree to make it all
05:54look like it is in fact in this scene. And once we have all the shading that we
06:00want, we can pull back and there we see the completed scene of our tree
06:03somewhere in the middle of nowhere with a staircase leading to a little gnome's house.

9. Enchanted Forest
Introduction
00:01Dreamscape is going to take us into fantasy land.
00:03It's going to take us into a beautiful enchanted forest at night.
00:08With strange glows and giant mushrooms and even a little fairy standing and
00:12hanging out by her mushroom.

Isolating and compositing the forest
00:00For our forest scene, we're going to use two different forests.
00:04Let's start with this one. Now, this forest here is going to be the
00:07one in the foreground. And I need to go in there, and just
00:10isolate these trees and pick 'em up. So that I can put some stuff behind it.
00:15Now, fortunately the sun was very bright that day, and I was in the middle of this
00:18little redwood grove. So, it was kind of dark in here.
00:22That exposed so I can get the detail on the trees, which made everything back
00:26there wash out, which is perfect. So, I'm going to look at the particular
00:31channel that has the most contrast so I can use that as a basis.
00:34And the red and green are pretty close, I'm thinking I'm going to go with the
00:37green, it has a little more detail. I'm going to go in there and duplicate
00:41that green channel. And I'm going to go to my levels, where
00:44I'm going to go over there and really pump it up so that all the trees and
00:47everything over there is going to get nice and black.
00:51Hey there we go, getting all nice and black, and my whites they well they were
00:54pretty white already, let's just make them totally white.
00:57And push this all the way in like that, click OK.
01:01Now some of these areas down here, this is the ground, it's just lightened up by
01:04the sunlight. I would like to have some of that stuff.
01:08So what I'm going to do is I'm going to go in there and, with my paint brush,
01:11make sure I've got a slightly harder edge.
01:15I'm going to go in there and just paint this stuff to black, just like that.
01:20Make sure I get all that nice ground cover going, just like that.
01:24There we go. All right, so now I'm going to invert this.
01:27So that my trees are the things that are going to be selected.
01:30And here I see some more, let's switched to white.
01:33And let's make sure we get that nice little area in there, picked up.
01:37Okay, so now that we have that, I'm going to go in and I'm going to take the
01:39alpha channel and turn it into selection. So I can take my trees and send them to a
01:44new layer, via cut. And now they're in their own layer.
01:48There they are. So, I can take this background layer and
01:50just kind of, maybe throw it away, but you know what, I'm going to keep it and
01:54I'm going to invert it. So now that will be that night time back there.
01:59All right, now we're going to manipulate these trees a little further.
02:02But I got my background selected, so something that I bring in is going to
02:04automatically come in on top of it. And, that's where my second forest is
02:08going to come in. This forest here is going to be the
02:11background forest, a little further back, and right now it's a little angled,
02:14because I was shooting up at these trees that were up on a hill.
02:19So, what I'm going to do is, I'm going to double-click on that to turn it into a
02:21layer, right off the ****. Click OK.
02:24And I'm going to go in and use my Transform tools.
02:27Hold down my Command key, so I can use is as a distort, and I'm going to distort these
02:31guys out, to kind of straighten them up. They, there we go.
02:35So now, they're nice and straight up and down, just like the rest of the trees in
02:38this forest. There we go.
02:40Click OK, and there they are. Now, I'm going to go in there and
02:44separate them as well so that I can kind of pull them out.
02:49And we'll do it the same way. We're going to look at the channels and
02:52see which one is going to give us the best contrast.
02:54In this case it looks like the red actually, the green, yep, the red's the one.
03:00So, I'm going to go into the reds, right there, and I'm going to go and do the
03:03same thing in Levels. I'm going to pump up those blacks.
03:07Big time. And the grays.
03:10Now here I don't worry about the ground because it's just the trees that are
03:12going to be seen back there. Now I click okay, and let's invert this,
03:15see how it's looking. That's looking pretty good.
03:18But just in case, you know what, just for the sake of it, because we can, I'm
03:22going to go ahead and whiten this stuff here.
03:25Just to make sure we get all of that tree in there, and we want all that good stuff.
03:29All right, go in there, turn that into a selection, and I'm going to take those
03:34trees and bring them into the guy back here.
03:38Now they're going to automatically fall in back, see?
03:40There they are. They're back there.
03:41So what I'm going to do is I'm going to shrink them down a little bit, because I
03:43want them to be even further away. So I'm going to do it from the center
03:47out, I'm just shrinking these guys down into this area just like that.
03:51So we have some trees back there. There they are, way back there, there's
03:55some trees. Now, I'm going to pull them up so they
03:57become really tall. There's some trees.
04:02Okay, click OK, and that's looking pretty good.
04:06Now, I'm going to start to manipulate these for us in the next movie, and do a
04:09few other little things that are going to start to make it look like an enchanted forest.
04:14
Collapse this transcript
Colorizing the forest
00:00So, now we're going to start to add the colors that we want for our forest.
00:04So, let's start with the one in front, here we go.
00:07And let's call this Forest in Front and let's call this one Forest in Back.
00:13All right, the Forest in Front, so I'm going to go into my Adjustments here and
00:16go to Hue Saturation because that's going to be the one where we colorize things.
00:21So, what I'm doing is I'm going to pump up the Saturation, make them really colorful.
00:26Then I'm going to bring down the Lightness, make them dark.
00:30There you go. Now, we get this nice deep tones in this forest.
00:34And the Saturation, that looks pretty good, let me click OK on that.
00:39Now, the one in back, we're going to do the same thing to that one.
00:43Now, for that one, I'm going to give it one more thing.
00:45Let me go in Layers and I'm going to go down here to Matting, I'm just going to
00:48say Move White Matt, just to tone down some of that white, which just went back
00:51just a little. And then we're going to go do same thing,
00:55Hue Saturation. And there, what we're going to do is
00:58bring down the Saturation and bring down the Lightness.
01:01So, that becomes this forest way in the back, see there's just a hint of that
01:04forest way back there, click OK. But now we're starting to get the sense
01:09of the time of day. Now, this stuff in here well we're going
01:12to work with that in a second because you're going to totally add the mystic
01:15effect that's going to make this really start to look like an enchanted forest.
01:20
Collapse this transcript
Adding mushrooms
00:00Now we're going to add some stuff to the Foreground, we're going to add some mushrooms.
00:05I have here a large mushroom. Now I'm going to pretty much do with this
00:10what I've done with most of these images, to separate it.
00:14I can go in there and create an alpha channel.
00:16I made a copy of the red channel in this case, which I then modify to end up
00:20looking like that. Let's go back to the RGB, that's what we
00:23want to select. So I'm going to go there and select that,
00:26and we'll bring that into our scene. Now it's telling me it's a different
00:29color, but these are from different sources, different cameras, and so on.
00:33So, I'm going to just say go ahead, do it, there's this mushroom.
00:36And the same thing with these little mushrooms here.
00:39I've already gone ahead and made the layer, there's the layer right there.
00:43So, I'm just going to grab that layer and bring it into the scene as well.
00:47Okay, so now going to modify these a little bit.
00:50Let's take these little ones and let's put them down in here, right down in
00:53there like that. And then the larger one, the larger one,
00:56we're going to have to modify a little bit.
00:59So, I'm going to go in there and go into my Transforms and shrink it down a little
01:02bit and let's put it in position, bring it down I think a little bigger, bring it
01:06down a little, this big one down in there like that.
01:10There, now that's looking pretty good. Now, these guys are all pretty much in
01:14the same little patch. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
01:18merge them together and merge this down so they're one.
01:22And now I'm going to go in there and I'm going to colorize them.
01:26I'm going to go in and I'm going to say Colorize, they're all be in one
01:29particular shade, I'm going to make a little warmer there.
01:33Pump up that Saturation a little bit, like that and make them a little darker.
01:36Okay, so now I'm going to go into my Levels, where I'm going to go in and just
01:39increase that Contrast a little bit between them.
01:43Right in there, get some of those midtones going.
01:46And in the process of doing that, they got a little brighter.
01:49So I'm going to go back into Hue Saturation, tone down that Saturation a
01:52bit, and make them even darker. because they're way in the foreground
01:56here, so we don't want them to be too obtrusive and just take a command of
02:00what's happening. And click OK, so that's starting to look good.
02:06Now we got our forest with our mushrooms in place.
02:09In the next movie, what we're going to start to do is to add some stuff coming
02:12down from above, we're going to create some vines.
02:16
Collapse this transcript
Creating vines
00:00So now, we're going to create some vines. We want some vines to be hanging in this
00:03forest here. Just to make it look even more kind of savage-like.
00:07So, create a whole new file and let's make it a little bigger.
00:11And, let's check the resolution of our existing file, so we're going to be close
00:15to that 72 dpi as well. So, that's good.
00:19So, let's go in here and say New. And 12 by 12 is good.
00:22Click OK. So we have a blank screen right here.
00:25And what we're going to do is create some vines.
00:29Now, the vines that we want to have, have all this moss hanging down from them.
00:33So what I'm going to do is first, create some moss.
00:36So I got a brush here and it's not completely hard.
00:40It's got, a little bit of a softness to it.
00:43So, I could kind of see where it is right there.
00:45Let's Undo that and let's make it kind of small.
00:48And what I'm going to do here is create the moss hanging down.
00:52I'm going to just going to go in here and just create this little thing like this.
00:59It can have a few little holes in there, no problem.
01:02And I'm going to bring down the opacity a little bit to about a 70 and start adding
01:07some little areas along the edges. And I'm going to make it a little
01:12smaller, and start getting really tight down here, there's a little stuff hanging down.
01:19Okay? You might say, well it doesn't look like anything.
01:22But when put into context, everything starts to become something else.
01:26We create that illusion. So there, we have this little hanging
01:29moss there. So what is that going to be?
01:33I'm going to select that and turned it into a brush, the fine brush preset.
01:40Now we're going to call this hanging moss.
01:42Let's get really specific. Now we can throw it away.
01:48So now, I got my paint brush and I'm going to select that brush, which will
01:52appear at the bottom. There it is and right now it does that.
01:58Okay, let's get our brush to 100 %, and like I said, it does that.
02:02That's kind of nice in itself, but we're going to go in there and modify that brush.
02:06So, what we're going to do is, in our brush engine, we're going to give it some
02:10spacing, spacing like, about like that for now.
02:14And we're going to go into Shape Dynamics.
02:16Now, no angle shift at all and we're not going to go with Direction.
02:21We're going to turn that off as well. So they're all straight up and down.
02:24Okay? And we have a Size Jitter.
02:26So we're going to keep that Size Jitter and make sure we don't get too small.
02:30So we got it about like that. All right?
02:33That's looking good. And Roundness, we might want to play with
02:36the roundness. So we want something that to be a little
02:39bit shorter and size and so on. Okay?
02:41So there we go. So now, our moss is going to start to
02:44look like this. See?
02:46It's starting to have a whole different look to it.
02:50So let's get rid of that. Add in a new layer.
02:53We got our moss. Let's make the size much smaller.
02:56About like that and I'm going to create a couple of paths.
03:01A couple of big arks, one right here. I hold down my Shift key to constrain it
03:06to straight up and down, and come way down to about here and pull.
03:11And come back up and pull. All right?
03:14So now, let's get this nice and straight in the middle, like that.
03:18Then I'm going to create another path, right here.
03:22This path is not going to be as long. Let's go right up in here.
03:27There we go. And let's make this guy a little smaller,
03:30like that. It's a little longer.
03:33There, he's just not as down as the other one.
03:36All right, so we have two different paths. So, in this layer, I'm going to take that
03:39path and let's just check our little mouse here.
03:43That's the size of it right now. Make it a little smaller, there we go.
03:47And in that particular layer, I'm going to take that path alone and go
03:50ahead and stroke it with our little brush we just created.
03:55There we go. We have that.
03:58So now, we're going to take this one. And, in the other layer, another layer on
04:02top of that, this, we're going to make it a little longer.
04:06We're going to make the brush a little bigger, and we're going to take that
04:09path, and in that second layer, we're going to go ahead and stroke it.
04:13So there, now, we're starting to get our sense of what this thing is starting to
04:17look like. Okay.
04:18So now, let's turn off our paths for now and we're going to get another brush.
04:24But this time, we'll use one that exists, so I'm going to take, let's just say, oh,
04:28let's look at the, this one. This is a pretty murky looking brush.
04:32It does, does kind of a thing. All right, so, let's go into our Brush
04:36Engine and we're going to modify this. We're going to give it a little spacing
04:39and we're going into those Shape Dynamics.
04:42We're going to turn this off. We don't want any change, but we are
04:44going to do a size change. Go to 100%, make sure it don't get to
04:48small and an angle change of 100%, see? Creates that kind of an effect there.
04:54And were going to play around with the Roundness a little bit, just a little.
04:57Let's get this down, bring this up a little bit.
05:00There, were starting to get this kind of effect here, okay?
05:04And on this Size Jitter, let's just not make it that pronounced.
05:08There we go, alright. So now, now that we have that, it's
05:11going to look like that. All right, so now, in another layer, on top
05:16of this guy right here. And let's start giving these guys some names.
05:22This is the smaller one way in back. We'll call this the far moss.
05:27And, what do you think we're going to call this one?
05:30Near moss. So this, we're going to call far vine and
05:35we get our path. There, there is our path.
05:40All right, so, and let's Save the path so we know where it is.
05:42Okay. There's that path in the back.
05:45Now we got that new brush that we just created, and how big is it?
05:48A little too big. So let's go in there and make it a little smaller.
05:51Maybe not that small. A little bigger.
05:55And that's the real beauty of Undo. Is that you use it to test something, and
05:59then, you can undo it. That's the one we want right there.
06:03So, let's Undo that. And in that far vine, we go ahead and
06:07stroke that path with that new brush. Then we take the near vine and we create
06:14a new layer and call it near vine. And we make that brush a little bigger,
06:20then we get that and we'll stroke it. Okay, so now, we're starting to get there.
06:28Now, let's go back in here and we have our far moss right there.
06:33I'm going to move it down a little bit. There we go.
06:35We're just moving it down, so that we get this moss, look like it's just hanging there.
06:39There's a couple of pieces that are off. We're going to fix those in a second.
06:43We're going to do the same thing now to the near moss, we're going to move it down.
06:47There we go. All right.
06:51So, now, we'll go in there and start to fix these.
06:55So, I'm going to take on near moss and just bring down the opacity a little bit,
06:58so I can kind of see what's going on here.
07:01So now, the parts that are extending beyond, we're going to go in there and
07:05erase those. So I'm going to get my Eraser.
07:09Here's a case where we don't really need to use a Layer Mask, because eventually,
07:12these two are going to kind of work together.
07:15I'm going to go in there and start to erase the parts that are Extending beyond
07:22our actual vine. And we could be fairly rough.
07:28It's okay because we just need to just go in there and get rid of that stuff.
07:32And on this side, we don't seem to have that much, no problem.
07:35Let's go in there and just get rid of the stuff we don't want.
07:38Okay? And the ones that are a little lost
07:42there, we're just going to kind of push those up.
07:45So we'll get our Smudge tool, I'm just going to kind of push them in so that
07:49they meet our vine, right there. There we go and we do the same thing to
07:53the one in the back. Let's get this to join in there, and when
07:57we bring back the opacity 100% there, we see that we have all that nice vine just
08:01hanging there and we'll do the same thing to the other one.
08:06Now, in the next movie, what we're going to do is we're going to take these vines
08:10and composite them into our scene and then light them.
08:14

Adding glow
00:00Before we composite our vines into the scene, let's start adding the glows that
00:04are going to make that forest look enchanted.
00:07So I'm going to go back over to the Forest file here, and I'm going to Select
00:11the Forest in Back. And right there I'm going to create a new
00:15layer in between the two, right there, I'm going to call that Glow.
00:19So that glow is going to appear between the two forests, the one in the front and
00:23the one in the back. So what I'd like to do is I'm going to
00:27pick a nice kind of a yellowish tone, let's get a nice bright yellow like that.
00:32And with my Gradient tool, set to Foreground to Transparent, and Radial,
00:36I'm going to go in here and draw a little tiny little Gradient, like that.
00:42Now, I'm going to go in and give that a Layer Style.
00:45Give it a Layer Style of Outer Glow. And I'll change that Outer Glow color to
00:49a bright green, like that, and you can see what's starting to happen back there.
00:55Click OK. I'm going to make that size a little
00:57bigger, make it look a little larger there.
01:00So we get that nice glow happening. Click OK.
01:03And that's the beginnings of our glow which I'm not going to go in there and
01:06take that and bring down its Opacity a little bit just so we could start to see
01:10the trees behind. Then I'm going to duplicate it, and I
01:14want it back, the original. I'm going to go into Transform tool.
01:18And I'm going to stretch it out, way out like that.
01:23And make it a little taller, like that. Now we're going to bring down its Opacity
01:28a little more. So we can just see those trees in back,
01:31there we are. So then the tool, I'm just going to move
01:33them up a little bit, just so they're a little higher up in our scene.
01:37So I'm going to use my Move tool and I'm taking my Cursor keys and just click in
01:40up and down, so there we go. Our glow is starting to go up, and you
01:44could just make out those trees in the back.
01:46See, that's why they didn't have to be that perfect, because that's just a hint
01:49of trees is making the forest look a little denser.
01:52But somewhere in between there, there's this weird glow, which is going to start
01:56making our forest look enchanted. Now, to add that glow to the rest of the
02:01scene, what I'm going to do is I'm going to go to my forest here, then I'm
02:03going to pick up that green. Let's get that nice green color again.
02:08And I'm going to get my Paintbrush, and I have it set to Color.
02:12And down here in that forest, I'm going to start to paint, and what's
02:15happening here is just a glow. A glow going down to the floor of the
02:19forest here and I'm going to make sure it's totally soft and I'm going to bring
02:22down the Opacity too, let's say about a 30.
02:26Make my brush a little larger. I'm just going to kind of add a little
02:29more glow to the forest floor here, just to make it look like that glow is just
02:32hitting everything. The trees, mushrooms, they're all
02:36going to get their glow a little later. But now, we've set the stage and next
02:41we'll bring in those vines.
02:43

Compositing vines
00:00So, now that we have our enchanted mood setup for our forest here, let's bring in
00:04those vines. Head over to the file with the vines, and
00:08I have all four vines selected. See that, and I also re-arranged them so
00:13that the two near are together and the two far are together.
00:17So, what I'm going to do now is I'm going to bring them in mass over to my
00:20other file. And there they are that little tiny guys,
00:24but no problem because what's going to happen is that we're going to put them in
00:27position and we're going to do a little Transform.
00:31Command+T, to bring up the Transform tools that I'm going to just going to enlarge
00:34these guys and put them in position right where I want them, right up in there like that.
00:40That looks fairly good, maybe a little bigger so that goes into that live area
00:44there, good, that's there. Now I'm going to take the near ones, and
00:47I'm going to duplicate them, hold down my Option key and just drag them until we
00:50see that little line between the layers, and it makes copies of them.
00:55And those two copies I'm going to bring over here, and I'm going to make that larger.
00:59And we have this nice little vine that's just kind of happily living back here,
01:03right in there, and click OK. So, now we have these three sets of vines here.
01:08All right, so now, we're going to go in there and colorize these, because right
01:11now they're all black. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
01:13start working on this first one here, which is fairly close to us.
01:16So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to take the vine itself, I'm going to lock
01:19the transparency and I've got to pick a color.
01:22We'll pick it right from this mushroom here.
01:24We'll pick some of these dark browns right in here, and we'll see how that
01:28starts to look. I go in there, and I'm going to fill it.
01:32I'll fill it with the foreground color, which we picked a nice deep brown, click OK.
01:38And there, we have that nice brown going on in there.
01:40Now we're going to play with this a little bit later.
01:42So, we're going to start adding some glows.
01:45So, that's pretty good for now. So, I'm going to go into my near vine
01:48back here. And I'm going to lock its transparency
01:51and we'll get a slightly lighter version of that brown.
01:55In fact, we'll pick it again from right here.
01:58A little lighter there, about like that, that looks good.
02:01And I'm going to go ahead and fill that with that color.
02:04And there we have that vine, which might be a little light, so what we'll just do
02:08is just darken it just a little bit, like that.
02:11There we go, just so we have a little hint of a vine back there.
02:14And, of course, there's a far vine, which, we're going to lock its
02:18transparency and go ahead and fill that with that color.
02:22And that one could be a little lighter because it's way back there.
02:25Now that we have that, let's do the same stuff to the moss.
02:28So the moss, we're going to go in here to the near moss copy here, lock its
02:31transparency and we're going to to go into the slight greens, kind of like
02:35murky greens. Let's go into the greens and we'll go
02:39into something like, about like that, kind of a mossy color.
02:43And were going to go in and give her that.
02:45It's a little light, so let's go in there and darken that.
02:48Almost black and say, moss, good, alright?
02:51Now, that what were going to do is we are going to make it a little darker.
02:55See what we're doing here, and it's good, click OK and we are going to give it some
02:59noise as well. We'll go in there and say, Add Noise.
03:04Just enough noise, just a little bit, just so that it starts to have this, kind
03:08of a crinkly look to it, like that, and we click OK.
03:12We're going to do that to the other two and then we'll be ready to start creating
03:16our little fairy that's going to be hanging out in this forest.
03:21

Isolating and compositing the child
00:00Now we're going to add one of the little denizens of this enchanted forest,
00:04going to create a little fairy. And for that purpose I'm going to use my
00:08little grandniece June Mi. Not the best shot in the world, so this
00:12is going to be great. A little faded out there, but this is
00:16going to be just what I need. Now to select her I created a path.
00:22There's a path right there. So what I'm going to do is, I'm going to
00:24turn that path into selection so I can now bring her into the scene right here
00:28like this. Now, came into the scene.
00:32Let's see where she came in. Right there.
00:34Let's put her behind the mushrooms. So I'm going to bring her down here, and
00:39where are our mushrooms? Let's see.
00:41Let's go down here, and our mushrooms are somewhere in here.
00:45Let's put it right here into foremost. Okay, so, there's our mushrooms way up there.
00:51All right, so let's put her right there. Okay, and we're going to call this Fairy.
00:56All right, so now you can see she's very bright.
01:00We're going to do some adjusting to her, but first let's get in place.
01:03So, we're going to bring her over here and she's going to be kind a hanging out
01:06by the mushroom there. So, I'm going to go in and there to my
01:09Transform tools and shrink her down. Right there and let's make it a little smaller.
01:15About like that, and she's going to be just hanging out by this little mushroom
01:18here, alright. She's going to be leaning her hadn't right
01:21on that little mushroom. So what were going to do is mask out the
01:25mushroom so we can see her hand, and maybe we'll bring her in front of this one.
01:30There we go, that way when we add her wings they'll really stand out.
01:34So there we go were going to put her right there.
01:37And now we can make her a little bigger. There we go.
01:40She'll really look like she's leaning on that mushroom.
01:42Right about like that. Make that happen.
01:45And let's get in real close, so we can see what's going to happen here.
01:48There's the mushroom. What we're going to do is we are going to
01:51do is take the mushrooms and reduce our opacity, so we can see where her arm is.
01:57And there's her arm right there. So we are now going to go in real close.
02:03And we're going to add a mask to the mushrooms, and we're going to paint with
02:07black 'cuz black hides. We're going to make sure that the brush
02:11is somewhat hard, pretty close, and a really small brush.
02:15That's going to be good, and I'm going to start the paint, and I want to really see.
02:19So let's bring it down even more. I really want to see where her arm is, so
02:23we can get closer, and I can now start to go in there and bring up my opacity for
02:26my brush. I can start to erase her so that she is
02:31visible right there on top of the mushrooms.
02:34And just going to go in here and hide these areas right here, right where her
02:38arm is at the top of the mushroom right there like that, there we go.
02:43And her low finger right there and now when we bring the opacity back up again.
02:48We can see that she is now in fact resting on top of the mushroom, now we
02:51need to colorize here. So what we're going to do is, we're going to
02:55go the little fairy and we're going to go into levels, where we're going to go and
02:58start adding a little contrast to her. There we go, so we start adding some contrast.
03:05And then we're going to go into our hue saturation, we're going to go in and just
03:09bring down Tones. And pump up that saturation just a little bit.
03:16Now were going to add some glows here. The green glows that are going to come
03:19from this glow. So, you will be colorized later.
03:22But that's the beginnings of her, right there.
03:25That's going to start. Now one more thing were going to do to
03:27her is give her her own glow. So I'm going to double click on it, and
03:30give it a little outer glow. Which we're going to go in there and
03:34we're going to pick up that same bright green that we have, because that's not
03:37being caused by a whole gaggle of these little fairies.
03:40So I'm going to go in there and start giving her a little bit of a glow, like that.
03:44I'm going to bring down the opacity so it's just a softening of that little glow.
03:48Click Ok. And in the next movie what we're going to
03:50do is going to create some nice wings that she's going to have right in there.
03:54

Creating wings
00:00So now, we're going to give our little fairy some wings.
00:03I downloaded from the Internet this picture of a dragonfly.
00:07Now, these wings are the kind of wings I want to have.
00:10So, what I'm going to do is just go in here and select this wing right here.
00:15And I'll just make sure I get the wing itself like that, and we'll copy it.
00:20And I create a new file. (UNKNOWN) reflect current contents of the clipboard.
00:25So, what I'm going to do is I'm just going to give myself a little more room
00:29here, we'll make it 8x5 and I'll Paste. And there's our little wing, right?
00:36So, let me get a little closer here so we can really see what's going to happen.
00:40It's a little kind of lost. So, what I need to do right now is I'm
00:44going to go into my Levels and kind of really darken those darks, and the
00:48midtones I want to lighten up. I want to darken those, I want to get
00:53those darks really strong just like that and click OK.
00:56So, now looking at it, I'm going to make it a little larger as well.
01:00So, I'm going to go into my Transform tool and just kind of do it from the
01:03center out and just make a little bigger. So, it kind of fills up the page right there.
01:09Okay, looking good. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
01:13Select it, Copy it, and I'm going to take it to an alpha channel.
01:18So right here, in an alpha channel, I'm going to paste it right there and I'm
01:21going to invert it. So now, we see where it's starting to go
01:25so here in the alpha channel is where I'm really going to start to see this thing
01:28come to life. So, I'm going to go into my levels here
01:33and really bring my whites up and bring my darks down.
01:37There we go. See now, we can see where this is
01:40starting to take shape. Click OK.
01:42And I want to get rid of that outer edge, so I'm going to go in there and just
01:45paint that out, get rid of that right off the bat because we don't need that.
01:51Now, in looking at it, we see that we got a little pixelization going on in there.
01:56In order to get rid of that, what I'm going to do is I'm going to blur this a
01:59little tiny bit, just going to give it a little tiny Gaussian blur, just to soften
02:03it up a little bit. Click OK.
02:08Now, I'm going to go into my Levels again.
02:10In the Levels, I'm going to make those whites in, bring my blacks in, and you
02:14can see what's starting to happen. It's starting to sharpen up again, and
02:18there we go. Now, we've got some nice sharp lines that
02:21don't really show all those pixels that we had before.
02:24Now in here, what I'm going to do is I'm going to start to clean up little holes
02:28that might have appeared. Like, right in there, I'm just kind of of
02:33fill that in and just do these little manipulations right through there just to
02:36make sure that I have all my little lines all nice and even and clean.
02:41There we go. So, now that we have this, this is
02:44going to be the basis of our wings. Now, the reason I'm doing it like this is
02:49because I want to be able to affect these little veins in my wings.
02:54So, once I have everybody exactly the way I want it, there you go, everybody is in
02:57place and let's just close this guy off and everybody is nice and clean, alright?
03:03So now, go back to our RGB, where we can throw away that layer.
03:06We don't need that layer anymore. But we are going to create a new layer
03:10and what I'm going to do is I'm going to invert my background so we can really see
03:12the effect that my little wings are going to have.
03:15And now, I click in here, New Layer, and I'll take my channel and I'm going to
03:19load it. There it is.
03:21And I'm going to fill that with a color. And I want my little veins to be kind of
03:26a warm color like that. So, we're going to go ahead and fill that
03:30with that color. And there, we can see that we have the veins.
03:33Now, the reason I like those in a separate layer is because I can now go in
03:36there and give them a Layer Style. So, I go in there and just give it a
03:42little Bevel and Emboss, and there you can see how they become 3-dimensional.
03:46So, I'm going to go in there and push that depth in, bring the Size down to
03:49about maybe a 2. Just so they start to have a little bit
03:53of a variance to it and the highlight color, I might want to change that, I
03:56might want to make that more of an orangey color, like that.
04:01Click OK and we put that in a Multiply mode as well, so we start to see how we
04:05got kind of this nice kind of a golden vein happening there.
04:09So, that becomes the basis of my wings. Now, what'll happen now is that I'm
04:15going to create a second channel, which is a copy of the first.
04:19And I'm going to fill in this area here, all this area inside, with white.
04:24And that's going to be the basis for the skin or the film between the little
04:28veins, which will allow me to then add the color.
04:32So, in the next movie, what we're going to do is add that color.
04:36But we're going to do that once we're in the actual forest.
04:40So, when I'm finishing this, you just wait.
04:43And in the next movie, we'll have these wings come to life.
04:47

Compositing the wings
00:00So, here's our finished wings. Now, the only thing I've done since the
00:03last movie is that I just filled in that second channel, which we want to look at it.
00:08There's that second channel which I, then, filled into a layer.
00:12Let's go back to RGB, and I fill into a layer just like that with a white.
00:17And might want to just go in there and clean those up.
00:19It's not necessary because it's just going to be soft skin.
00:22So now, what I'm going to do is I'm going to take both layers together and
00:25bring them into my scene. So, I dragged him over and there they are.
00:32Now, they're a little small, so I'm going to go right of the bat and make him
00:36much larger. Like that.
00:38And I'm also going to flip them horizontally, so go in there and say Flip Horizontal.
00:44All right. So now, I'm going to take them and put
00:46them in position right about here. And now we see it's a little large, so
00:49let's just make it a little smaller. Little smaller, right in here.
00:54Doesn't mean we can get kind of like the whole wing in there.
00:56Okay. There we go, nice little wing.
00:58Okay. Now, we're going to need a second one,
01:00put it right up in there. All right.
01:03So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to duplicate them and before I do that,
01:06let's go in here and modify it. Now, we've got the little skin, right?
01:11Now, the lights, the darks are coming from this side.
01:14Let's change that, Bevel and Emboss. Let's change that, Bevel and Emboss, so
01:18that the light's coming from this side. There we go.
01:21Now, everything's shifted over and little shadows are on that side there.
01:24And then the skin area. What I'm going to do is I'm going to pick
01:27up a little green. I'm going to pick up that same green
01:29color we've been using but a little lighter like that.
01:32And I'm going to lock the transparency for it, so I can just throw in a little
01:36film of green. Okay.
01:38Let's make the brush really large. And throw a little touch of green right
01:43in there like that. Maybe a little bit at the end.
01:46And then, what we're going to do with the skin is bring down the opacity
01:48considerably, so we can see through it. And now it's just this little touch of
01:52skin in there, but we could see through it to the other side.
01:56All right? So now, what we're going to do with that
01:59wing is we're going to take both of them and duplicate them.
02:03Option+click+drag, until we see that little separation in between and we get
02:06the copies. So now, the ones in back, that's these
02:09two here, we're going to do is we're going to go in there and make them a
02:12little bit smaller and rotate 'em. And put 'em in position back in there.
02:18There we go. And click OK on that.
02:21And we're going to put those behind the little girl.
02:23going to put 'em right there. So, they're coming in from the other side
02:27of her back. And there's our little wings.
02:30Now, what we're going to do is, we're going to take that same effects that we
02:33have for the fairy, and apply them to the skins.
02:37Right there. And then, we're going to apply to the
02:40skins over here. Now, you notice that we almost don't see them.
02:44And I'll tell you why in a second. So, we'll go to the other skins.
02:48Right here. And apply that same thing again.
02:50Apply it into veins, there's the skin. And were going to apply those right into
02:56the other skin right there. There it is.
03:00So now, why aren't we seeing those? That's because of the fact that we
03:03lowered the opacity. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
03:06go to that skin copy right there and bring that opacity back up to 100%.
03:10And what I'm going to lower is the Fill Opacity.
03:14That way that skin is going to start to disappear a bit but the glow will remain.
03:18See, there's that glow. let's bring that down even more.
03:22There we go. And we go to that other skin, the one in
03:24back, and we're going to raise that Opacity back up to 100% and take that
03:28Fill Opacity way down. So, this starts to disappear into the
03:32background just like you did with the first wing.
03:35And there we see that now we have the little wings on our fairy.
03:39In the next movie, what we're going to do is we're going to start to add the
03:42effects of that glow on the rest of the forest, the fairy, and the mushrooms in
03:46the front.
03:48

Creating multiple fairies
00:00So now what we need to do is add a bunch more fairies.
00:04So what I'm going to do is, I'm going to go in here and create another file.
00:08And that's good enough size because, what I'm going to basically do is create a
00:13little tiny fairy. So I'm going to go in here and I got my
00:17brush, make it nice and hard, make it really tiny.
00:22And I'm going to create a little tiny fairy, make it even smaller.
00:25And I'm going to go in here and just create the little body.
00:28Here's the little body. And I make the brush even smaller, and we
00:31have the little feet. And then I'm going to bring down the
00:34opacity for the brush, and bring it down to about, say 70.
00:38And I'm going to create the little wings. I'm going to create a little wing like
00:41that and another little wing like that, and there's a little fairy.
00:45Now I'm going to create another one right here, and these wings are going to be
00:48like this and like this. Just to start adding a little variety to
00:53our fairies, so I'm going to bring the opacity back up and here we go, and add a
00:56little body with the little hands a little body little feet.
01:01There we go. So this is going to be two little fairy
01:05brushes, select first one and I'm going to say define brush, and well call
01:11it Little fairy. And we'll define another brush, and we'll
01:19call this Little fairy two. So now, we can throw this away say
01:25goodbye to it, we don't need it anymore don't save it.
01:30Back over here again is another layer, and in fact we're going to put this layer
01:34right here let's put it right behind our moss.
01:37But in front of our forest, right here in front of the forest, which is add a new
01:42layer and we'll call it Fairies. And we get our paint brush and I'm
01:47going to get that first little fairy. There's that first one but right now does
01:52is a little thing here like this. So what we're going to do is we're
01:55going to get a nice little color, just going to kind of use a little gray or
01:58maybe even a little pink like that right does that.
02:02All right so now, what we're going to do and we'll make it a little darker.
02:06There we go. I'm going to go into my Brush Engine, and
02:09we're going to give it a lot of separation.
02:12We're going to separate these fairies quite a bit, like that.
02:15And we'll go into Shape Dynamics, where we're going to have a little size jitter,
02:17like that. Have a little minimum setup there, like that.
02:23And a little bit of an angle shift, just like that.
02:26Okay. But now we've got these little fairies.
02:29So, I had that. I'm going to go in here and just draw a couple.
02:33And one more thing. I just realized.
02:36Let's give it a little scatter on both axis all the way across like that.
02:40Right. So, I'm going to go in here and just draw
02:42a bunch of little fairies like that. And, looking at it, I'm going to give it
02:46even more spacing. It's always nice to do a little test
02:48there just to see how it's going to work. And we're going to give it a full spacing.
02:53Go back into my scattering and bring that count down.
02:56We don't want a lot of them, right? And we want that to go all the way.
03:00Scatter as much as possible. So now we draw little fairies.
03:03There's a couple there, a couple more over here.
03:06Make the brush a little bigger. And, we draw a couple right in here, like that.
03:11Then we're going to go in there and assign a little outer glow to these guys.
03:16And the color we're going to choose is that nice green, that bright green right there.
03:21Just like we had before. Click OK, and make it a little bit bigger.
03:27And bring down the opacity just a little. So now we have all these little fairies
03:31that are floating around. Once we added that glow, they all start
03:34to really come to life. Click OK.
03:36And there we have little fairies that are all flying in different directions.
03:40And now what we're going to do is, get that other brush.
03:45we'll do the same changes to that. We'll give it a lot of spacing, a little
03:49shape dynamics, same settings and the scatterings.
03:53It's going to remember all the settings from the last brush.
03:55Click OK. And in another little layer right here,
03:57or we can even do it in the same layer. because as we draw them, you're going to
04:01see that it's going to create all the same little fairies, all through this
04:04area here in here like this. And we get all these little fairies that
04:09are just floating around, like that, in our scene.
04:12So now we got all these tiny little fairies.
04:14So now, in the next movie, what we're going to do is to add the effects of all
04:19these glows on these surrounding forests and mushrooms.
04:25And our main little fairy in the front.
04:27

Adding glow to fairies
00:00Now we're going to start lighting the scene based on the light source, which is
00:03way over here. And of course, there's a light source
00:06where we're standing from, which is lighting up the mushrooms in the foreground.
00:11But we're going to go in here and add some more lighting to it.
00:14The mushrooms themselves, we need to go in there and look at those mushrooms, and
00:17let's darken them just a little bit more. Let's bring down the saturation.
00:23A tad more and darken him a little more, just to make him fit a little more into
00:26this scene here. There we go.
00:28Click OK. There starting to look a little better.
00:32But to them we now have to have the effects of this big glow out here.
00:36So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to create a layer on top of it, right there,
00:39and I'm going to clip it with the layer of the mushrooms.
00:44And I'll call it the glow. And I'm going to pick up that same green
00:48that we've got all throughout here. Let's just go here, and let's pick it
00:51right from here, and get it nice and bright green right there like that.
00:56And what I'm going to do is I'm going to make sure that my brush is a nice soft
00:58edge brush, like this one here. Get the hardness way down and the size
01:02well we'll determine that once we got in here.
01:05Let's go in here and bring it in, and what we're going to do is we're going to
01:08bring down the opacity to about 50 % and slowly build up this glow.
01:13And as I draw, you can see its just falling right inside, its staying inside
01:17the mushroom because of the fact that we've cupped it with the mushroom layer.
01:23And I'll make the brush a little larger. And bring that opacity to about a 20.
01:27I could just add a little bit more of a glow right in there.
01:30Now, I don't want the glow to be inside the mushroom, here.
01:32So, I'm going to go in and erase it, right in this edge, because this edge is Underneath.
01:38We don't need to see that. So okay?
01:40Now we're going to take the brush and just make it smaller, and just apply a
01:43little bit of glow right in here, and to this mushroom here.
01:47Same thing with this edge, right there. We just pick up a little bit of that light.
01:52And this guy down here is going to pick up a little bit of the light, as is this one.
01:56Just a tiny bit of that light being picked up along these mushrooms.
02:00Now, I'm going to put that in a Screen mode to see how that's going to look.
02:04And then bring down the opacity. So there's just this little hint of a
02:07glow on the mushrooms. There we go.
02:10Now here it kind of got lost, so we're going to kind of increase it a little bit
02:13on these edges of these mushrooms. 'Kay, so there.
02:18Now same thing with the child or our fairy in this case.
02:22There's a fairy. We're going to add a layer to that.
02:26Call it glow, and clip it with the layer of the fairy.
02:30And we're going to go in here and just add a little green right into there.
02:33Where it's just being picked up. Right there.
02:35And along the side of her face, just picking up that green from over there.
02:40Right in there. Just the sides that are facing the main
02:43glow, so that her highlights are now going into that same green tone.
02:48And, we bring that into Screen mode. And we can suggest a little bit, just a
02:53little hint of that green in there. Bring that opacity back up, and then
02:58we've just have a little hint of that green on the side of her face and on the
03:01side of her hand, and so on, the parts that are facing that light.
03:07Now in the next layer what we're going to do is to start adding the same effects
03:11to the forest itself. That's going to be a little bit more involved.
03:16
Collapse this transcript
Adding glow to the forest
00:00So, now we're going to add the effects of that glow on the forest.
00:04The forest is way down here. You know, in fact, when we started
00:07looking at this Layers panel, it's starting to get pretty crowded.
00:11There's a lot of stuff in here. So, you know what?
00:14Let's take a second and organize it. All right.
00:16The mushrooms, well, they're kind of there by themselves.
00:19And we got the little wings and the little fairy, right?
00:22And all these little things here. So, what I'm going to do is, right here,
00:25on top of wing copy, which is this wing back here, I'm going to say, make a group.
00:31And we'll call this Main Fairy. And what I'm going to is I'm going to
00:35take the Wing copy, the Skin, Skin copy, Glow, Fairy, Wing, skin, all those that
00:41make up the fairy. And I drag all of those into this folder.
00:49There they are. So, now I can close that folder.
00:51Now, all the things that make up the Main fairy are in one folder.
00:55Now, the vines, there's those vines. So, right above this, we'll create
00:59another layer and we'll call that Vines. This is going to make it easy to organize
01:04and find things because it's getting kind of chaotic in here.
01:08So, we're going to say, near vine all the way down here to the far moss.
01:13All those can go into there. There we go, and we can close that.
01:17See now? It's starting to get a little more manageable.
01:19We don't have to scroll so far. And in fact here, what we'll do is, right
01:22there, we'll just create one more and we'll call this scene forest.
01:27And in the forest, what we'll do is we'll take all the pieces that make up the
01:30forest and the glow. All the way down to the back here and put
01:35those into that folder. And there, now we have a very manageable
01:39Layer panel that you can see, that it's not going to explode all over the place.
01:43And now, we can just go to the places that we need, which right now I'm
01:47going to go into the Forest folder and select the forest in front.
01:52So, there's a forest in front. So, what we're going to do here is add
01:55that glow. And what I'm going to do is I'm going to
01:58double-click on it and give it an inner glow right there.
02:03See how everything started to happen there?
02:04And that inner glow, what we're going to do is pick up that same green we've got
02:07for the fairies and everything else like that.
02:11There it is, that inner glow. And we can make it a little bigger too.
02:15It's going to make it a little bigger. See?
02:17So, that we can really see it on the trees.
02:19There we go. We've got this nice glow happening there.
02:22Now, to click OK, right there. So now, what's going to happen next is
02:27that I want to go in there and see that glow only in certain areas.
02:33Basically, in this area right here. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
02:36give it a mask. And I'm going to hold down my Option key
02:40to give it that mask, so it's a black mask, which hides the entire contents of
02:44that layer. Right?
02:46But that hid the layer, so let's undo that.
02:49What we're going to do is we're going to take that glow which is created and
02:52separate it from here. because that's what we want to hide.
02:55We don't want to hide the forest. We want to hide the glow.
02:58So, I'm going to go in there and say Layer > Layer style > Create Layer.
03:02And there you see that the glow is now a separate layer.
03:06So, I'm going to give the glow, that Black Layer mask, Option > Click Layer Mask.
03:11The glow disappeared. So, what I'm going to do now is, using
03:14from white to black, I'm going to take my Gradient tool and make sure I'm going
03:17from white to black there. And in a radial gradient, I'm going to
03:22draw a gradient right here. And there you see that now the glow
03:26appeared only where I want it to be, only in the areas that are really close to
03:31that main glow. And the final touch for the forest is
03:36going to be these trees right here, should be casting a shadow.
03:40So, what I'm going to do is right here in front of this, I'm going to create one
03:44more layer. And I'll call it shadow (SOUND) and I'm
03:48going to very quickly select right here. I'm just going to go in here and kind of
03:52create this little shadow here just like that.
03:56Right there. And then Shift to add another little
03:58shadow right here. And in that layer, I'm going to go ahead
04:03and fill it with black. Okay, right there.
04:06And then, I'm going to give it a little Gaussian blur, just to soften up that
04:09little shadow, right there. There we go, making it nice and soft.
04:15There we go, like that. Set that up in Multiply mode and reduce
04:18the Opacity a bit. Just so it starts to become a little
04:22shadow in there. And I'm going to go in there.
04:25Let's get real close and just to finesse this really well.
04:28I'm going to go in there and get rid of the parts.
04:31I can erase it here but I'm going to just go in there and erase the parts where we
04:34don't want the shadow to be, which is on the tree itself.
04:38There we go. We now have our little shadows being cast
04:41on to the ground from these trees and it starts to look better.
04:46And the next and final movie, what we're going to do is, add the glow to the vines.
04:51They're going to need that same glow. Similar effect what we did here, but with
04:54a slight difference.
04:56
Collapse this transcript
Adding glow to the vines
00:00Now the final thing is to add that same glow to the vines.
00:05So now the vines are way over here on the top, especially this one right here.
00:10Now the thing that's going to make this a little different is the layer style we're
00:13going to use. We're going to close up the forest here
00:17and go to the folder of the vines. And the near one is the one we want
00:21because that's this one that's right in here.
00:23So we're going to go to Near Moss copy. The transparencies still locked from
00:30before when we started adding some tones and colors to it.
00:33But what we're going to do here is give it a layer style.
00:36And just like before, we're going to use that green.
00:38But instead of doing the inner glow, as we did before, we're going to do an inner shadow.
00:43And the inner shadow we're going to change to that light green.
00:48Now, we're not really seeing anything because of the fact that it's a shadow,
00:50it's set to multiply. And since the vine is almost black, we
00:54don't really see anything from Multiply mode, so I'm going to change this to
00:57Screen mode. And then now we see that we have all of
01:01these little tones along the side there. So all along the sides of the vine,
01:05lights come in from that side now I have some Layer styles happening here.
01:09If I change the light source its going to affect those as well.
01:13See, see how that changed. We don't want that, this is a Global Light.
01:17So what I need to do is to affect only these vines and not affect those wings
01:20over here. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to
01:23turn off my Global Light, so I can change the light source to be coming from this
01:25direction here. And there we see that now we have the
01:28light where we want it. Now I'm going to bring down the opacity a
01:31little bit. So we just have this little hint of these
01:33little vines here. Click OK, right there and we're going to
01:38drag that same effect over to our vine copy.
01:43Right there, which is going to give us that same little effect along the side there.
01:46And as we did before, what we're going to do is we're going to separate that effect
01:51from the layer. So we're going to go in there and say,
01:55Layer Style > Create Layer, and it creates a layer, and there you see the
01:59layer for the Near Moss, right? So that now I can go in there and we can
02:05give it a mask. And the mask I'm just going to go in and
02:08erase the parts I don't want. And I, course it's a mess, so it's okay.
02:13I can be fairly free with what I'm doing because it's a mask I can easily change it.
02:18So I'm going to go in there and start to slowly make this side get a little
02:21lighter as the top. I want those sides there to be as strong
02:25as possible. And then the same thing with the vine.
02:28I go to the vine and I say Layer style > Create layer and I take the moss, give it
02:33a mask. And I'm going to erase the sides that I
02:38don't want. So I want to lessen this a bit and lessen
02:42the top just a little. And there we see that the moss is picking
02:46up that nice glow. Now we'll do the same to the other two,
02:50and in this case, like for instance the one in the middle, which is the one we
02:53call the Near Moss and Near Vine. We're going to go in there and just
02:59select that one, and give it that Layer style.
03:02And here we're going to go with that Inner glow because it's pretty much dead center.
03:07So I'm going to go in here and give it that green and there's my little glows.
03:12And I'm going to give the same thing to the vine, except, you know, to the vine
03:15it's going to be a little different. To the vine, I'm going to go in there and
03:21say give it the Inner shadow. Which again, we'll go in there and change
03:26this to the light green, and change that to screen.
03:30And I'm in the far vine right now. But we can leave that.
03:35Let's go to near vine, there we go. That's what we're going to give to the
03:39inner shadow, which we make a green. There we go, change this to Screen.
03:46And we had that in the shadow. Again, we're going to turn this off.
03:50And now we're going to have the light coming from right above.
03:52See how we got that nice shadow on the inside?
03:55And we're going to go in there and erase the parts we don't want.
03:59Now, there's going to be some parts that are hidden behind the tree.
04:02In some cases, we're going to lose that glow completely.
04:06So, it's just a question of going in there and manipulating these glows until
04:09you have them exactly the way you want them.
04:12Then the thing will be down to the last one, and the finished image will be all complete.

10. Factory
Introduction
00:00This dreamscape will put us standing in front of a graffiti clad wall.
00:05A brick wall that's being bathed by the setting sun.
00:09Behind that wall will be an industrial complex of girders, and factories, and
00:14cranes, and all kinds of stuff. An industrial complex that we can't quite
00:18see, because of that brick wall.

Selecting buildings: Part one
00:00We're starting off with a blank screen. The first thing that we're going to do is
00:03we're going to get the buildings that are going to populate this scene, and select
00:07them and bring them in. Now, there's going to be various ways of
00:11selecting the scene here. So let's start with this one here.
00:17This is actually going to be the hardest one.
00:19So I'm going to take my Magic Wand, click in the sky, which pretty much grabbed
00:22everything there. I'm going to do an inverse, and pull it out. And, just drag it in. There we go.
00:27You might say that was the hardest one. But I was only kidding.
00:29But there's the first of our buildings. Have a look at this one.
00:40This one starts to get a little more complicated.
00:44Why? Because of the fact that we don't want
00:46the entire building, we only want this section right here.
00:50Right here, that piece. I could do a Magic Wand up here, but it
00:52would have all of the intricate stuff happening in there.
00:55So what I'm going to do is I'm going to choose Color Range.
01:00In a very similar fashion as I did before.
01:01And I'm going to just go in here and select that sky, and hold the Shift key
01:05to make sure I get more of that sky. Just like that.
01:10Click OK. And now, I'm going to go in there and
01:12inverse the selection. So, I take the selection and inverse it.
01:17And I save that selection. And we'll call it, bldg.
01:21So, when we look at our channels we can deselect it.
01:25There it is. There's our selection.
01:28Now there's some of this stuff up here. The little bit of the sky gradiation, the smoke.
01:35By going into Levels, I can kind of eliminate those by making my darks much darker.
01:39There they are. Click OK.
01:41Now, these parts I do want, so what I'm going to do is take my Paint Brush and a
01:46large brush, get a nice, large brush here, and I'm setting it at 100%.
01:51I'm going to go in there, and just paint those areas to white.
01:54Okay? Now, going to come in close here, getting
01:58real close to this pipe here that we see. And, I do want the pipe.
02:04So, what I'm going to do is, I'm going to go in there and just paint it into white,
02:08just like this. Make sure that I'm encompassing the
02:12entire pipe all the way through this big giant pipe, here.
02:16Now, I don't have to get that neat because look, I already have one made
02:18back here. But what I'm going to do here is I'm
02:21going to switch to black and I need to paint stuff out.
02:24But I need to see what I'm doing, there's my image in back.
02:28So, I'm going to paint with black now, and I need to hide these.
02:33So as you can see, I'm starting to go in there, and I'm just following the pipe
02:36right along this edge here. I got it nice and clean, and go all the
02:40way down to where I need it. Right to about there.
02:44Let's get a smaller brush here. If I can go around this little piece?
02:49Okay? Not going to be that neat, don't want
02:52to waste the time here. And going to go in and just fill this all up.
02:59Go all the way down. Okay?
03:00There we go. Now again, a much larger brush so I can
03:03start to fill all that stuff up. All the pieces I don't want.
03:08Okay so now I can go in there and just do very quickly and just select entire areas
03:13and fill them with black. All these areas here are just filled with black.
03:21There we go. So we're just kind of hiding everything
03:23that we don't want to have in our scene and so on.
03:27Right? So, we'll go like that.
03:29Now the parts we do want, well those parts we're going to expose.
03:32Again with the white, I'll go in there and start painting these things that I do
03:36want to have. Now, these pipes, they seem to suddenly end.
03:41I want to keep those pipes, so what I'm going to do is get real close.
03:44And I can make my brush small enough so that it's just about the size of the
03:47pipe, and I'm going to click here, Shift-click.
03:51And, I'm holding on that Shift key, so it constrains it to a straight line.
03:54I want this little gizmo over here, at the end.
03:57And there's another pipe here, so I'm going to go in there and this one's
04:00slightly smaller. So I'm going to go in there and click.
04:03Click, go across, down, and back here. Now here it looks like it got a little
04:09thicker towards the end, so I'm just going to do another little click there.
04:12So, I'm going to go in there and I want to make sure that these guys are all exposed.
04:17And when I have exactly what I want, it's going to end up looking like this.
04:22Where I need to just go in there and touch up a few little spots here and there.
04:26And this mask is ready to go. So when I pull back, I can see that when
04:29I bring in to my RGB, that mask is ready. But before I do that, let's go in here
04:35and look at this image, because the image is a little kind of muted.
04:40So, I'm going to go in here and give it a Levels Adjustment layer.
04:47And here I'm going to kind of punch up, because it's a setting sun in this scene.
04:51So, I'm going to punch up the contrast there like that.
04:53Then I'm going to give it one more Adjustment layer, where I'm going to say
04:57Hue Saturation. And then I'm going to punch up the saturation.
05:01See, so now I'm getting the sense of the setting sun.
05:03And then I'm going to go and say holding down my Option key, and say, Merge Visible.
05:09I'm doing that because I want to keep the original layers intact.
05:12Now I will take my alpha channel that I created, and all this stuff over here, I
05:16don't need that, so we can deselect that. I'm just going to go in there and
05:20eliminate all these things, and actually I want to use this one.
05:24There's the one that I want. For now, I can take this building and
05:27bring it in. Let's take our sugar factory, take that
05:32out of here, and put that into our scene. Okay?
05:38Now, the third one. This one's a little more complicated, so
05:41we're going to do this one in the next movie.
05:44

Selecting buildings: Part two
00:00Selecting this building requires a little more finessing.
00:02Why? Because it's such an intricate work of
00:05girders all through this area here. So, I go and look at these channels, and
00:10see which one is going to give me the most contrast.
00:14Now, I see that the blue is the best contrast in this case.
00:17And yes, I already have a alpha channel in there, but I'm going to grab it and
00:20duplicate that blue channel. There it is.
00:23So, I want to take the blue channel and invert it.
00:27There we go, and we start to see the building.
00:30All right, so, what I'm going to do is, in Levels, I'm going to start to bring in my whites.
00:35Concern myself with my whites this time, more importantly, than my darks.
00:39Now, I can bring in my darks. I want to bring in those whites first,
00:42because these little very tiny and very light and thin railings are the ones I'm
00:46concerned with. So, that's fairly good for now.
00:52Click OK, this is going to take a couple of steps of the same process.
00:56I'm going into Levels again, and again I'm going to go in there and bring in
00:58those whites, make sure they're nice and strong.
01:01And then, bring in the blacks. See now we're starting to get a nice
01:04separation, see it slowly starting to separate.
01:07Bring in those blacks just a little more, click OK.
01:10It is at this point that I might want to go in there and start to whiten these
01:14towers as I did in the last movie. I just go in there with a nice brush and
01:19I start to whiten these towers to expose them.
01:22And I make sure I go in there and get real close.
01:24Once I have all that stuff in, I start to get in a little closer.
01:28Let's just zoom in so we could see what's starting to happen here.
01:31I don't want to lose these railing here. So, I'm going to go into Levels a third time.
01:36And that third time I'm going to bring in the whites again.
01:38Bring in those whites and start to make those darks a little stronger.
01:42Now, I've got the separation that I would need throughout.
01:45Now, in cases like here, where it just got lost for various reasons, the same
01:49thing here, if I look at the art, we see that there's this pole here, holding this
01:52lantern, and that railing is there. I want, want to do in this particular
01:58case is to go in with a very, very tiny brush.
02:02We'll make it a hard-edged brush. It's hard, and bring that brush way down
02:06so that it kind of matches the existing railing, right about there.
02:11And I'm going to start and generating my railing right from there and come down to here.
02:18See? So, I'm basically creating my own railing.
02:20I'm going to come down one size and click and click.
02:25See? So, I'm generating the railing based on
02:27what's there now, so that way I don't lose any detail and the same thing here.
02:31I'm going to start there, come up to here.
02:33And here, I might want to see it. So, I'm going to turn my RGB on, so I can
02:37go in there and start to follow the railing right across like so and down.
02:42And then, once I have all the pieces in place, I will end up with a Channel that
02:48looks like this. because what I've done there is just to
02:52take all these areas that I know need to be white and I just whiten them so that
02:56now I have, as you can see, a good selection process.
03:00Down here it's soft because most this is going to be lost anyway.
03:04So now that I have this, I can come back to my RGB and I can go in and load that channel.
03:10So, now that we have the selection, I can take this and import it into my file so I
03:14can grab this and bring it in. And now I have the three elements that
03:20are going to make up the background. In the next movie, what we're going to do
03:25is put them in position, and start adding the sky.
03:28
Collapse this transcript
Compositing elements
00:00So now, let's take our buildings and put them all in position.
00:03Well, this guy here, we can see right off the bat he's really strong.
00:07This guys not as colorful. So what I do is I'm going to take that
00:10last building we brought in and let's get in a little closer on this so you can see.
00:16I want to match that same brilliance. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to
00:19take that building and go into my Hue /Saturation, and there, I'm going to
00:22pump up that saturation. Okay?
00:24So there, I can start to match up that were getting the same kind of brilliance.
00:29Click OK. All right?
00:31So now, when I pull back a little bit, I'm going to go in here and that's
00:34getting a little closer. So I'm going to start to take the
00:37buildings and put it in position. I'm going to set this up so that I have
00:41Auto Select with my Move tool, so I can grab these elements and put them into
00:44position where I want them. Now, this building here is not going to
00:49work in, in its current state, so I'm going to have to do some adjusting to it.
00:53So let's just turn them off for now. The one in back here, this one I'm going
00:56to shrink down considerably. If I go into my Transform tool, then I
01:00can bring down its size, put it in position, and do a little rotation on it,
01:04just a little tiny rotation. And, I need to change that perspective
01:09ever so slightly. So what I'll do is I'll grab this handle
01:12and just go kind of straight up on it. So it starts to match the perspective
01:16that we have here. We have a similar perspective right in
01:19this one here. There?
01:20And there, we click OK, and that one falls into place right behind these others.
01:26Now, these are going to be adjusted once again once the wall is in place, because
01:30we're going to put a wall in front of the entire thing and here's that final building.
01:35So what we need to do here is we're going to make it, give it the rotations.
01:40And I'm going to go in there and not that one.
01:43We're going to make sure we're in this guy here and we give it a little rotation
01:47like that. And we're going to make it a little bit
01:51bigger, so there. Now, we have all the buildings in place.
01:54And in the next movie, what we're going to do is we're going to start to add the
01:58sky is going to fill up this area up on top.
02:01
Collapse this transcript
Compositing a polluted sky
00:00So now what we need to do is add the sky. Sky is going to be back here.
00:04So I make sure that the Background is selected.
00:06So that way anything that gets brought in is going to automatically fall in front
00:10of the background and back of everything else, which is where I want the sky to be.
00:15I have a sky here, this is going to be the sky that I'll use.
00:19So it's got a nice strong sunset, kind of like what's happening in our scene here.
00:23So I'm going to drag it into our place right there, there's the sky.
00:27Now, I'm going to have to modify this considerably.
00:30First of all I'm going to go in there and do a little flip horizontal on it,
00:33there's one step. And then I'm going to have to go in there
00:36and adjust the site, bring up my Transform tool.
00:40Now, you notice that it's much larger than the actual image so I'm going to hit
00:44Command+0, so that I can see exactly where I'm modifying this.
00:48So I'm going to go ahead and shrink this down.
00:51Bring it down so I can get a really nice portion of the sky into my scene, I
00:55want to have as much sky in the scene as possible.
00:59And I, truncate it a little bit like this, and stretch it out, so I have a
01:02nice bit of sky, there we go. It's going to look like this.
01:07Let's crunch it up a little more so we have some nice sky happening right up in
01:10there like that. Now, these buildings will be adjusted as
01:14I go along. But here we go.
01:16So now, as I start to see this, and I get a little closer, I see that this building
01:19still is not quite right, This one is a little too tall back there.
01:24Let's go back to this building here, and I'm going to do a little Levels
01:27adjustment on it just to make a little darker.
01:31So we have the same kind of darkness that we have here, we have there and that dark
01:35just a little less. That's looking good.
01:39'Kay and this building back here, we're going to move that one down just a little bit.
01:44So I just move the sky down just a little down to this area.
01:48Now there's my sky, so what I'm going to do to the sky is I'm going to do a couple
01:50of things. First of all, I'm going to go in there
01:53and I'm going to, punch up the color a little bit.
01:57So at Hue saturation, I'm going to punch up the saturation, make it really strong.
02:01Nice, strong sunset kind of a color, okay?
02:06But we're looking at this big industrial park here, and the sky looks so blue.
02:11It looks so comfortable there, doesn't it?
02:13So what I'm going to do is I'm going to create a layer on top of it and I got
02:16this beige I just picked right here. There's this beige for the foreground color.
02:21And in that layer what I'm going to do, is I'm going to go a head and fill it
02:24with that color. Fill it with the foreground color at
02:29100%, there we go. Now, this is going to be our pollution.
02:34So what I'm going to do is I'm going to change the mode of that particular layer
02:37here to color. And there you can see that it's going to
02:41go in there and kind of intensify that whole thing there and bring down it's
02:46Opacity so that we're just going to block out just enough there so that it deepens
02:51that blue sky. See without that it's all very bright but
02:56with it, you suddenly got this kind of murkiness to our sky.
03:00It just add a little murkiness to it, maybe bring up the Opacity a little bit more.
03:05So we'll get just that little murkiness that's happening in there and we can see
03:08that it is now a polluted sky. And in the next movie, what we're
03:12going to do is start to create the brick wall that's going to keep us from going
03:16into this industrial park.
03:19
Collapse this transcript
Creating a brick wall
00:00So what we're going to do now is create a brick wall.
00:02A large brick wall right here that kind of blocks us off from this industrial site.
00:07Now in my series on Photorealism that I created quite some years ago, there is a
00:12movie on how to create a brick pattern. And that works very well, however those
00:17bricks were nice and clean. What we need to create is some bricks
00:21that have been exposed to the pollution being caused by this industrial park and
00:25the ravages of time. So I got here a blank file, where I'm
00:30going to create the brick pattern. In a layer I'm going to go in here and
00:35create a brick. I'm going to turn on my grid, just so
00:38that I can have a little bit of a guide of how things should go.
00:42Right. So I'm going to go in here and just
00:44create a brick. There's a brick and this will be a second brick.
00:48All right, so now we know where they are. Right, there's the bricks.
00:51Now I can turn off my grid. So I don't need to see that grid anymore
00:55and I have my basic shapes where I want to make my breaks.
01:00I'm going to go in here an fill these up I want to make them, but the thing is
01:03these are real clean and just like those others the, the original ones right.
01:08So what I want to do is start to mess them up a little bit.
01:10So I'm going to just kind of give them some rough edges and so on.
01:14And I'm going to in here and let's fill this one up as well.
01:17And I'm going to roughen this one up. Now this one, it'll have couple rough
01:21edges along the top, and I might want to just break a few pieces in here.
01:26So I'll take a and eraser and just kind of roughen it up on the bottom.
01:31And maybe cut off this little corner here and roughen up a couple sides here, and
01:35ruffle up the top a little bit. So were getting some little variety
01:41there, so these are two bricks right. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to
01:46take this brick and move it over just slightly.
01:50And make a copy of it. Make a copy of it right here, make sure
01:54I'm in the right layer here, and move it over, and put it right between these two.
01:59And we'll take another one, and move it over there.
02:03There I got four bricks. Now I'm going to roughen these up some more.
02:06So I'll go in there with my eraser. And let's get a small eraser and we'll
02:11kind of break up this corner break this up a little bit, a little more break up
02:15that corner there. That's got that little peak there, let's
02:19make sure that peak is gone, let's get rid of it here completely.
02:23So that we have some varieties of four bricks that look totally different.
02:27So what I'm going to do is I'm going to take all four of these.
02:31And I'm going to duplicate them right below.
02:35Right in there like that. And do a little flip horizontal on them,
02:38flip horizontal. So these are starting to look a little different.
02:42And I'm going to change 'em some more. So I'll go in there and start to make a
02:45couple of little changes here. And, and maybe I'll erase a little bit
02:49just so things start to look really different.
02:52So when I'm done I'm going to have something that looks like this.
02:56There you go, so I've got a whole bunch of little bricks here there all different shapes.
03:01And I have a row of half bricks which is going to totally break up the pattern of
03:05these bricks. Now you'll notice that looking at this
03:10scene here. Let's get rid of these panels.
03:14We see that the way I've set this up, this is going to be a pattern.
03:18I've set it up so that it ends in the exact same area so that I'm going to have
03:22to get a step and repeat. This little space up here, plus this
03:27space down here is going to give us the space that's equal to this space here.
03:31So it's going to be a continuation top and bottom.
03:34Then this space here plus, that space there is going to give us this space.
03:39So, these bricks will seem to continue. Now, this brick here is cut off right there.
03:45Where's the other end? Right there.
03:48This brick is cut off here, there's the other end right there.
03:51So, if I go in here and I look at my panels again, and I turn off my
03:55background, because I want it to be transparent.
04:00I can now Select All and Define Pattern. Brickwall texture, we'll call it just brickwall.
04:10Click OK, and we're there. So, now I can create a whole new file.
04:15Let's say well make this let's make it six by six, pretty much, close.
04:21Click OK. And let's get a little closer so we can
04:24see what's going to happen next. I'm going to go ahead and, this is going
04:28to be this, let's say the grout, right? So in a new layer, right here, I'm going
04:32to create the grout. I'm going to fill that with a color for
04:35my grout. So, let's just say that we get this kind
04:38of a grayish tone like that. And we'll fill that with that color, and
04:43we're going to give it some noise. So, we'll go in there and say, Add Noise.
04:48Get a little bit of noise, just enough to have some texture in there.
04:52And then we're going to go ahead and fill, and with fill we're going to fill
04:55it with that pattern we just created. Click OK.
04:59And we did something wrong we should do it in another layer.
05:04There we go. So now, here we will fill it with the
05:07brick pattern. Click OK.
05:09And there's our brick pattern. And you'll notice that it's fairly
05:12continuous, it doesn't have any seams in it and it looks pretty clean.
05:16Now I'm going to turn this into an actual texture.
05:19I'm going to lock the transparencies for it and we're going to fill it with a
05:21deeper gray. I'm going to say much deeper gray about
05:25like that. And there we go we have this color.
05:29Now let's get in real close go to 100% here and pull back a little.
05:34And now what we're going to do is we're going to add a little more texture to this.
05:38So I'm going to go in there and say Add Noise to the bricks.
05:40There we've got a nice little texture, in fact in the grout we'll add a lot more noise.
05:46So it gets a little stronger back there. There we go.
05:48And now we're going to differentiate these bricks some more.
05:50In here using Dodging and Burning I'm going to go in, and start to do a little
05:54burning in here, on this brick. And let's make sure we're set the shadows here.
06:01All right, and we'll add a little shadow to this one.
06:04Maybe to these, and this one, and that one.
06:07We're getting very random here. Then we're going to go with our, Dodge tool.
06:11Make it the size of the bricks, and we'll work with the shadows.
06:15And we'll go in there and start to lighten a couple of bricks here and there.
06:19So we're adding a little variety. And we start to get our brick wall.
06:25Now in the next movie we're going to really start to give this dimension by
06:29adding some layer styles, which are going to make these bricks pop off the wall.
06:35But we're going to add another little feature to it, so in the next movie we're
06:38create our final brick wall.
06:41

Compositing the brick wall
00:00So here you can see that I have filled a file that I'm going to use as my final
00:03brick wall. There it is, I've gone in and darkened
00:07and lightened all the little pieces that I want and so on.
00:10We'll get a little closer now so we can see what's going to happen next.
00:13I'm going to give it a little dimension. And that's by going into that Brick
00:16layer, double clicking on it and giving it a little Drop Shadow, little tiny Drop Shadow.
00:23That will separate the bricks from the wall, and it will make the light coming
00:26from above just like that and give it a little more distance.
00:29Just a little tiny distance like that, just enough to make the bricks look like
00:33they are in fact separated from the wall. And I'm going to give the bricks themselves.
00:38An inner shadow, which I'm going to turn off this Global Light thing and bring the
00:44light down from below. See now the bricks are really starting to
00:49pop away, they're starting to pop out of the wall and they're starting to look
00:52really good. Okay?
00:54So I'm going to click OK. There they are!
00:58So there's my brick wall. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to
01:02go in here, and I'm going to say Option > Merge Visible.
01:08There we go! And that's going to be Wall.
01:12All right, so let's turn that off. So now, going to go back to our original
01:16bricks here and I'm going to regrout first.
01:20And I'm going to go into Hue Saturation and I say colorize the grout.
01:24I'm going to bring it into this warmer tones here, almost like a yellow kind of
01:27a thing, right there like that. And pump up that saturation just a little
01:32bit like that. Click OK.
01:34And then the bricks the bricks themselves I'm going to go into Hue and Saturation
01:38then say Colorize. Bring those into a nicer red let's make
01:43them nice and bright red a little more brick like there we go.
01:48Give them a nice, kind of a, well let's make them a little more orangey.
01:51because remember there's a, that sunset, right, so what we're going to do is,
01:55let's make them really nice and strong, like the sun is just bathing these bricks.
02:00There we are, so there's the nice bright bricks, make them really bright.
02:04All right, when we turn on this other one we see how dark it is, and this one we'll
02:07make nice and bright. Okay, so now, let's go into those effects.
02:12And a the Drop Shadow in this case now since it's a setting sun we're going to
02:15go to that Drop Shadow. And I'm going to turn off the Global
02:19Light and have the light coming from straight on this side.
02:23Right there there's that setting sun and the distance will be even stronger.
02:28There we go. And then the Inner Shadow, well, let's
02:30turn that off on this one. And we're going to give it Bevel Emboss
02:34instead, Bevel Emboss. So, again that light is going to come
02:38from right there, where our setting sun is, right there.
02:42And this light, that's not very good. Let's go more with a yellowish tone
02:47because as that setting sun is just really bright on the edges of our, our
02:50wall there. And click OK on that and let's make that
02:55a little stronger right there. And then this color here we can go with a
02:59deep brown, a deeper brown. Right into that area like that.
03:04Nice deep brown. And increase the opacity on that.
03:08And, we click OK and there we see that we have the two walls.
03:13In fact now that we see this one let's take this original one here and make it a
03:16little bit darker. So we just go into our, Hue, Saturation
03:20and darken it a little bit more. Just a little bit more.
03:24There we go. Click OK.
03:26Now we can really see a difference between these two walls.
03:29Okay, so now. Let's turn this one off.
03:32Go down to this one, and we will merge visible with the Option key.
03:36Right there. And the reason I'm using the Option key
03:38is that you notice these layers remain in packs.
03:40So I can constantly go back in there and use these bricks for other things, change
03:43the colors to whatever I need. Okay, so now.
03:46This one we'll call Sunlite Wall. Okay, so now that we have both of these together.
03:53Okay, let's go back, let's go way back in space here.
03:56There's our two walls. There they are on top of each other.
04:00So, what I'm going to do and we'll put the sun lit one on top there.
04:05That looks good. And I'm going to take these now and bring
04:08them into my scene. Now before I do that let's, let's just
04:12make sure that we have the topmost layers selected. Nope. There we go.
04:16The last thing we did was to pollute that sky, so I'm going to select the top most layer.
04:20Why? So that when I bring something in it's
04:22automatically going to fall on top. So I go to my brick wall and I grab both layers.
04:27Both layers together and I bring them into my scene and there's the brick wall
04:32in place which I'm now going to distort to fit the scene that I have.
04:38So, I'm going to go in here and use my Transform tools.
04:42And I'm going to, hold down my Command key so I can distort, and I'm going to bring
04:46this down. going to bring this wall down, and bring
04:50this one up, just like that. See, so now I got this brick wall that's
04:55just exposing the tops of those buildings back there.
05:00Which now I can modify those buildings to get them exactly the way I want now that
05:03I see where my brick wall is going to go. So now that I have the brick wall in
05:07place, I can say go ahead and do it. And I'm ready for my next step which is
05:13going to be to add some graffiti to that wall.
05:16
Collapse this transcript
Adding graffiti
00:00So now, what we're going to do is add some graffiti to this scene.
00:02But you know, when you look at it for a second, we see that our brick wall, even
00:06though we make it nice and bright, it's still not as strong as the sun hitting
00:09these guys back here. So, what I'm going to do it I going to go
00:13to the sunlit wall and I'm going to go into my Hue Saturation and I'm going to
00:16lighten it up a little bit and give it more Saturation.
00:21There we go. So now, it starts to look more like that
00:23sunlit in the back there. A little more saturation, here we go.
00:27That's looking a little better. And now, we use some graffiti.
00:31Well, here's a little shot that I took from a moving train which is why it's so
00:34(UNKNOWN) because I'm shooting through a window that's been pretty, pretty frosted
00:38just from wear. And that's some cool graffiti, that I
00:42thought was really nice. So, I took a picture of it.
00:45As the train was moving by, that graffiti is going to be perfect for our wall.
00:49So, what I'm going to do is I'm just going to just very roughly, go in here
00:52and select it. I'm using my Lasso just to select it.
00:56I'm just going around this area and I'm not doing a straight line, I'm just
01:00trying to get kind of like a, a rough edge as to where it goes.
01:04See, and that, I don't want it to be too clean and there we go.
01:08I had that. So now, I'm going to take that and I'm
01:11going to put it on top of our wall, drag it right into our place.
01:15There it is. So now, I'm going to go and distort it,
01:17so that it fits onto the wall itself. I'm going to shrink it down a little bit.
01:24And I'm going to hold down my Command key to distort.
01:28And I'm going to just distort this into that perspective of the wall that we have here.
01:33So, I get this going just like that and make it happen.
01:37All right, so there's our brick walls. So, I'm going to do a couple things to
01:41this graffiti. First of all, I'm going to make two of
01:45them, alright? And this one here the one on top is going
01:49to be the one that's hit by the sun. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
01:53go into my Levels here and I'm going to increase the Contrast on it.
01:59Really make it nice and colorful, just like that.
02:02And I'm going to go into Hue Saturation, where I'm going to pump up that
02:06saturation, make it really strong, really nice looking effect there.
02:11Really nice and clean. Click OK.
02:15Turn this one off. And, in fact, let's turn off that brick wall.
02:18This graffiti here, the one in back, we're going to go in there and do that
02:23same little play with to bring up the contrast.
02:30But we're going to go into our Hue Saturation here and tone down the
02:33Saturation a little bit and definitely darken it, okay?
02:37So, there's the darker one. So, what we're going to do is put that
02:40one in front of our dark wall, and then the bright one on top of the bright wall.
02:46So, there's our graffiti. There's a little touch that we're going
02:50to need to this, so what I'm going to do is I'm going to take this brick wall
02:53right here, take this brick wall, and let's just look at the brick wall itself,
02:56and see what it looks like. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
03:02select it and copy it. I'll give myself a new channel right there.
03:07And I'm going to paste with the Shift and select it.
03:12So, I'm going to hold down my Shift key and Paste.
03:16So there, we see the brick wall in place so what we're going to do is we're going
03:20to move it down. We're going to just move that selection
03:23down so that the brick wall is right on top of the original brick wall right there.
03:29And if we need to get close to see that we're right on top, there we are, right
03:33on top of it. And we might want to just move it up just
03:36a little bit just so that we see that we're right, there we go, now we're nice
03:40and even. So, we turn these off, and there's our
03:44brick wall. So, let's pull back and look at what
03:47we've done here. There's the brick wall.
03:50What I'm going to do is I'm going to increase the Contrast.
03:55I'm going to make those darks and my lights much lighter.
03:58See, it's the lights I'm concerned with here.
04:01All those little lines in between. So, that's where I'm, I'm trying to get,
04:05to get those lights to come right through.
04:07There they are. There's the nice little lights.
04:10So, I'm going to click OK. So, what I'm going to do now is I'm going
04:12to go back to my layers. First, go back to my RGB, go back to my Layers.
04:18And right here, this one is not so bad but what I'm going to look at is, there's
04:24the graffiti. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
04:30turn that channel into a selection, right?
04:33And right above the Graffiti Layer, I'm going to add a layer and I'm going to
04:37fill it with black. Turn it off and we can see that now we
04:41have the little bricks showing up through there.
04:44I'm going to lower the Opacity a little bit, so that they're just going to be in
04:47there like that. Same thing with the graffiti.
04:51I'm going to kind of lower its opacity just a little so that the brick textures
04:53start to show through. Now, we can see that the bricks and the
04:57graffiti are starting to work together. I'm going to duplicate that layer.
05:01I'm going to have some little lines and put it in front of the colored graffiti.
05:07And let's turn these two on. And there, we see that we have the same
05:10little thing happening. I'm going to reduce the Opacity for the
05:15the bricks themselves, just like that. Or rather, for the graffiti, so it starts
05:20to mix in with those bricks behind. And there, we see that now we start to
05:24have a little more of a realistic looking effect of our little lines there in
05:28between the bricks.
05:31
Collapse this transcript
Lighting the wall
00:00Its now ready to start lighting this whole wall.
00:03So the first thing I want to do is I'm going to clip those little lines that we
00:07made for the bricks. I'm going to clip them with the actual
00:11layer of the graffiti, right there and right here.
00:15So that way these lines are confined to the area of the graffiti.
00:19So now, what I'm going to do is right here in the brick wall.
00:24I'm going to use my Pen tool, and I'm going to create what looks like a nice
00:28reflection from some building off in distance.
00:33So I'm going to have this little area like this, is it'll come down.
00:38And kind of follow the bricks this way, and come down a little more.
00:44Go across, let's make this a little straighter there.
00:47Go across this way and come up to about here, and go across here like this.
00:55And come up to about there, and then, shoot off into this area right here.
01:02What I'm going to do now is I'm going to close this off here, and turn that path
01:06into a selection. This path, I going to Save it, and what
01:10we're going to call this is, shadow. Now it's not going to seem like a shadow,
01:15but that's basically what we're creating here is this shadow here.
01:19So I'm going to turn it into selection just like that, and I go back to my
01:22layers and there's the Sun lit layer. What I'm going to do is say, give it a mask.
01:27It's going to make that mask based on what's currently selected there.
01:31I'm going to take that mask and copy it, by holding on to my Option key right onto
01:36the graffiti. And there we see that now we have this
01:40nice light being bathed across our scene here.
01:44And you know what we might want to do is just kind of like just add to this thing here.
01:51Let's make it a little longer. Have it end right about there.
01:54So right here in that mask, right in here, I'm going to go ahead and say add
01:59some white right in there. And to this mask, well, there it doesn't
02:04matter because the graffiti is not seen in that part.
02:07But there we see that we have this nice light that's casting onto the wall from
02:10the sunset, and these are buildings somewhere over here that are blocking it
02:14and creating a shadow. Now, this shadow here's long, and the
02:18longer a shadow goes, the softer it starts to become.
02:21So what I'm going to do is I'm going to select this whole area here, right here,
02:24and give it a little bit of a blur. And this is going to be to both masks.
02:31So I'm going to go into this mask and say give it a little Day Blur, say Gaussian
02:34blur of about let's say just a little about six looks good at this resolution here.
02:41So let's just come down a little bit, okay?
02:44We'll click OK. We'll do the same thing to this mask.
02:47Give it the same filter. There it is.
02:49But now, this has to get softer as it gets further away.
02:53So what I wanted to do is create another channel.
02:56We have that first channel, let's create another channel right here.
02:58And let's see the RGB on top. And what I'm going to do is create a
03:02gradient, from black to white. Radial gradient, and why this is where I
03:06want the effect to be, which is out here and here its already has an effect.
03:10So I'm just going to create a gradient right across here like that.
03:13And let's make sure we're linear gradient, let's undo that, linear gradient
03:17okay and we go straight across like that. There we have this nice effect, we can
03:22make it a little bit deeper, there we go. So, now we come back over to our GBs and
03:27we load that. Let's turn it off and load that.
03:31And now what we're going to do is right herein that in our layers, and there's a
03:36mask for the sanded wall I'm going to give it a filter.
03:41Gaussian blur and we're going to go a little further this time, we going to go
03:44and apply it a couple of times. Here is one, apply it again.
03:48I'm hitting Command+F to apply it a few times.
03:51And there you can see that it's getting softer as it's getting further away, one
03:54more time and I deselect. There we see that the wall is now
03:58property lit, with the shadow of some buildings off on the side.
04:03Now in the next movie what we're going to do is add the sidewalk.
04:07
Collapse this transcript
Adding weeds to the sidewalk
00:00Now we need a sidewalk to our scene. So, let's go in here and let's make sure
00:06we're in back. So, way back here, in front of the
00:10background, I have a sidewalk, there's a nice little sidewalk.
00:14This sidewalk is going to work perfectly for our, our scene here.
00:17I'm going to drag this into our scene right here, there's the sidewalk.
00:22Now, I'm going to make sure Auto Select is turned off, and I'm going to move my
00:25sidewalk down into position where I want it, right about down here, just like that.
00:30And I'm going to darken it, so I'm going to go into my Levels, just to
00:33darken it with Levels, right there, so it gets this nice same kind of darkness that
00:37we see on the wall here. So it's in the shadows of these buildings
00:42off to the side somewhere. Click OK, that's working out pretty good.
00:48So, now what we're going to do is add some weeds.
00:51So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to pull this guy out so it's in it's own
00:53field and look what's in the back here. I have this other image back here and
00:56let's, let's pull this out so they're all in individual little layers here.
01:01And let's get our other guy, let's bring it back over here, there it is.
01:07And what we're going to do is start to add some weeds down here.
01:10So I'm going to clone from this. This image here is going to be great for
01:14my weeds because I have all this brush down here, it's kind of rough looking
01:17stuff, okay? So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
01:20take my Clone tool and I'm going to use that brush, the grass brush which I'm
01:24very proud to say is one of my brushes, these three are mine.
01:29I'm going to use that brush with the Clone tool.
01:31I double check my settings here, let's go in there, and we see that there a little
01:34bit of a scattering that, that's less and less scattering just a little bit, there
01:38we go. And everything else works pretty good.
01:43So, we'll just say, let's get our Clone tool, and we're going to start with let's
01:47say right here. Now, come over here and in a new layer,
01:50on top of sidewalk and on top of the wall as well.
01:55So, just go all the way to the top here, and we'll create a new layer.
01:57And let's start naming our layers, we haven't been naming them, let's call this
02:01one, Weeds, right? And what I'm going to do is I'm going to
02:04throw a couple of weeds right here that's just growing right out of the sidewalk there.
02:09And we'll draw something bigger here, a little patch of them, right there.
02:13We'll pick up of some of this here from here, some of this darker stuff, and
02:16we'll come here and start throwing that in there, too, okay?
02:20So there's just kind of weeds just growing all through here like that
02:23against the wall. Now, we'll come over here and we start
02:26drawing from here, there we go. Get some weeds happening there.
02:29And, you notice that I don't have a line sample here, so it's always going to pick
02:33up from the same spot. So, I'm going to get a smaller brush a
02:36much smaller brush. And, let's get over here and we'll pick
02:40up some of this green stuff here. Come over here, and we'll throw a little
02:44green, right in here, right, there's a little bit of that green stuff there.
02:48Let's make sure we're getting that green, there we go.
02:52Come over here and we add a little green to this edge, right there.
02:55We're just picking up a little bit of the green, and we'll throw a little greens
02:58into that area there, throw some more, right along that edge.
03:03Okay, now we come in here we'll pick up this darker green right and there.
03:07And then we can start throwing some of that stuff in here and this is a big
03:10patch of, of weeds that are growing and we'll throw some more right back in here,
03:14and we'll throw some greens in here and there and there.
03:20Just having little blades of grass coming out from in between the cracks in the
03:23sidewalk just like that, and there we have some weeds.
03:28So now we're almost ready. In the last movie, what we're going to do
03:32is re-position our buildings so it has the drama and the visibility that we want
03:36for this industrial park that's hidden from our view by the stone wall.
03:42
Collapse this transcript
Positioning buildings and adding final touches
00:00So now that our wall and everything is in place, let's get those buildings just the
00:03way we want them. And look at the overall image.
00:07Well, our graffiti for one thing, right there, it's a little bit not as strong as
00:10I'd like it to be. So, what' I'm going to do is I'm going to
00:14down to that graffiti. There it is, the one that's in the dark
00:19wall, and I'm just going to punch it up a little bit by increasing the levels on
00:22this just a little bit. Going in and darkening those tones, it
00:27enriches the color quite a bit. There we go.
00:29So, that's looking a little better. And we might want to do this one here as well.
00:33So, let's go to that line of graffiti and we'll go into Levels and kind of
00:37intensify that one as well. Just get those midtones in there and
00:41there, we might just want to go in and do a little Saturation as well, make it a
00:44little more saturated, because it is in the sunlight.
00:48See now, the graffiti really starts to jump out at you.
00:51Now, let's look at the buildings. I get my Move tool, and going to make
00:55sure it's set to Auto-Select. And I'm going to start looking at the buildings.
01:00Hey, we got this one here first. I'm going to go in there and raise that a
01:03little bit more so we see more of the building.
01:07And I'm going to go in there and bring in those midtones a little more just to add
01:11a little more drama to the side there. that middle building right there, not
01:17quite right. Let's just bring it in like this, and
01:21we'll darken it a little bit. So, that looks a little more interesting.
01:25These big drums, whatever the things are. So, we'll go in there and kind of darken
01:29that one, make it a little stronger. So, it starts to match these other dark
01:33areas around here. And then finally, this building here,
01:36which we're going to bring way up. We're going to bring it way up so we can
01:40start to see the other little window start to pop up there.
01:43Now, there's one thing about this. This perspective sees pretty good, seems
01:47to follow everybody else, but this perspective doesn't seem quite right.
01:52So what I'm going to do is I'm going to select this whole section of the building
01:55right through here, right in there. And I'm going to go in there and do a
01:59little transform on it, holding down my Command key to skew, and I'm going to skew this.
02:05It's going to skew it straight up until it starts to match the perspective of
02:09these other buildings right in here. So, that's starting to look a little
02:14better, and even possibly, almost match the perspective of our wall here.
02:20There we go. Click OK on that and there, we can see
02:23that now our building is starting to look a little better and there's the overall scene.
02:29And one more thing, that sky, the sky needs a little more contrast, a little
02:32more strength in there. So, I'll just do a little Levels on that
02:36just to intensify that sky some more. There we go.
02:40Intensify the sky. And now that we've done that, we can take
02:44this polluted area and let's just intensify that a little bit just so that
02:47the sky gets a little bit murkier just like that.
02:52And there, we see that we have the finished factory scene of industrial area
02:56that's covered up by a brick wall, not exactly the best neighborhood in town.

11. Casting a Spell
Introduction
00:00This dreamscape will put us at the point of view of a wizard mixing a concoction
00:05to cast a spell. It'll incorporate a lot of things, like
00:09some 3D and a beautiful full moon outside the window, and some effects that you
00:13probably haven't thought of before.
00:16

Compositing the background
00:01The first thing we're going to do is to create the little cell or the room
00:05where our concotion is being mixed. I've got my file here and I have this one
00:12file of a wall. This is a shot I did back in when I was
00:16in Manchu Picchu one time and that's a wall from there.
00:21And, what I'm going to do, is I'm going to take that wall.
00:24And just bring that whole thing right into our scene.
00:27There it is. So now, I'm going to make it a little smaller.
00:29So I'm going to go to my Transform tools, and hit Command+0.
00:34So that I can see the entire area. And I'm just going to go ahead and shrink
00:38this down to where I want it to be. It's going to be somewhere like that.
00:43It's going to be a nice, big window off to the side like that.
00:47There we go. And let's move it over a little bit.
00:50Let's just move it over just a little, so we get a little more of the wall showing there.
00:54And there's our basic scene. So, let's go back to Full screen here.
00:59Add then darken this. I'm going to want to really darken this,
01:02but before I do that, I'm going to cut out a hole.
01:05So I'm going to get in real close here on the window, and using my Pen tool, rather.
01:10I'm going to go in here and select the wall, and back here.
01:13And backup this little shape. Let's get real close on this.
01:18Let's really get a feel of where this is going.
01:21And then, so I'm going to bring this all the way in here, and then come around
01:24this little piece of the wall here. And go around and get it into there.
01:30Around this little hole here, there's this little shape here.
01:34And I'm just repositioning my Pen tool as I go along.
01:37There you go. And then we're going to just get out new handle.
01:42And go around, around this whole section right in here.
01:45Now I'm just following the basic shapes of the existing rocks in place here.
01:53And I'm going to go all the way down to the bottom here, and right here I'm
01:57going to change directions and come in this direction.
02:01This is going to be a little base of the wall, doesn't quite look like that but
02:04we're going fix it and make it look the way we want it to in a little while.
02:09So now we'll go up. And we follow this whole wall up into
02:13here into this little crevice. Open it up.
02:18And come up to the top here and finish it off right there.
02:22Pull back and I take that path, and we'll turn it into a selection.
02:27And let's Save it, just in case we want to do something later.
02:31All right, so now that we have that, I'm going to simply knock it out.
02:35There it is. This is a hole there.
02:37So going back to my layers in my background, I'm going to invert it, so
02:40its black its outside its dark. And I got my background selected, so I
02:45have some clouds. So I'm going to take these clouds and
02:48drag them into my scene. There we go.
02:54There's the clouds, which I'm also going to shrink down.
02:59I have this nice little cluster of clouds inside that window, right there like that.
03:05That looks good. Click OK.
03:08Let's get real close again. And now, I'm going to go into my
03:12levels, and I'm going to increase the contrast in some of this stuff here like that.
03:19They're really strong. And then I'm going to go into my Hue
03:22Saturation, where I'm going to bring down saturation completely.
03:26All the way down. Now that I have it like that, I'm
03:30going to go in and do some more levels work.
03:34Get those darks really dark in there. Just like that.
03:37Okay? So now, look what I've got here.
03:41I have a little moon, and I'm going to select that moon.
03:48A little circle. A little circular selection.
03:50Put it right there, there we go and copy that moon into the scene.
03:55Big moon. So, let's shrink it down so it's just this
04:00little thing right in there, right in the clouds there just like that.
04:09So now our moon. going to go in there and increase some
04:13contrast on that, so it becomes a really powerful looking moon.
04:16Let's get the lights really so that it looks like it's lit up.
04:20Okay and I'm going to go in and let's just turn that into a selection.
04:25Just because I see that, that Little black area around the edges, don't like that.
04:30So let's contract that selection. This is how we fix things after the fact
04:33here we'll contract it by about let's say two pixels and that's good.
04:39So now when I inverse the selection hit delete, then that outside part of the
04:42moon is gone. So now I go into my Hue Saturation, where
04:46I'll bring down the saturation and bring it into those blues a little bit more.
04:52There you go, more towards those blues. There you go.
04:57Closer to the blues. Eh, about there.
05:00Looking a little green, actually. Let's say colorize it, that way we can
05:04really control where the color is going to be.
05:06There we go. Now we got in to the blues and there.
05:09So, we're going to give that moon a little bit of outer glow, a little outer
05:14glow which will make a nice kind of a light blue and expand that a little bit.
05:22So we got this nice little glow directly around the moon.
05:26So now what I'm going to do is, in front of the clouds here I'm going to create a
05:29new layer, and I'll get a nice bright blue.
05:33Like about like that. And I'm going to get my Gradient tool set
05:36to Radial gradient, and make sure it's a foreground to transparent.
05:42And right here I'm going to throw a little gradient right outside there like that.
05:45Maybe a little bigger. So I'll do that.
05:48Made it a little bigger. There we go.
05:49And what I'm going to do with that is I'm going to set that up to color.
05:54See, so that, what it did is just added that nice blue haze to my clouds.
05:59So now we've got the moon in place, and we're going to take the wall and we're
06:02going to darken it considerably. So I'm going to go into my Hue Saturation
06:07or my Levels rather, and just kind of darken those tones way down, so that
06:11we're inside, like that. Darken that some more, okay.
06:17And we might want to add a little tone in here.
06:20So kind of like a candle-lit tone. We're going to get this nice, bright yellow.
06:25And the layer above it, right here, I'm going to throw another gradient.
06:30Kind of like the one I did for the moon. But I'm going throw a gradient right out here.
06:33Like that. Which gives me this nice kind of
06:35yellowish tone. And I'm going to go in there and set that
06:37to screen. And bring that into passivity considerably.
06:40Just so it starts to look like there's a candle lit somewhere, off in the distance.
06:44See. Just added that extra little light.
06:47And there's the beginnings of our background.
06:49In the next movie what were going to do is add the book of incantations.
06:55

Creating the book
00:00Not ready to create our spells but before we do that there's a couple of things
00:03that I need to do here. For one thing is that there's a couple of
00:07changes that need to be made to the background.
00:10For one thing I went ahead and lightened that area inside, inside the window, and
00:15I separated into a totally different layer.
00:19Now what I'm going to do with that is that I'm going to go in there and
00:21colorize that. Go into Hue Saturation and hit Colorize.
00:27And I'm going to bring that area into the blues.
00:31Like that. That's a nice, little kind of a, little
00:35bit of a darkening there. Bring up that saturation just a tad.
00:39Like that, alright an there we have this. So now, what's happening here is that this
00:44is the moonlight. So, what I'm going to do is, I'm going to
00:47add a mask to that layer, and that mask I'm going kind of really soften up the
00:51effect that we have here. So I'm going to get a nice soft edge brush.
00:58And bring it way down to size. And I'm bring down the capacity as well,
01:01so I can just work gradually as I'm applying these effects.
01:05Now to get in closer so we can see what's going to happen here.
01:08Now I'm just going to slowly start to get rid of it in these areas here, where
01:12there's a little joint right there, and right in there.
01:18Just to soften that up. Then I'm going to make it a little larger
01:21and just kind of soften this edge just so it starts to kind of fade away right
01:26around that edge. Just starts to fade away, exposing our
01:31wall behind. And here, I'm going to kind of bring it
01:34off into the sides. And there I'm going to get rid of a whole
01:38thing there. So I'm starting to get this kind of a
01:41soft, kind of a halo of the moon, kind of coming in through this wall outside.
01:48There we go. So now we start to get more realistic
01:51kind of a feel. As if the moon is being, lighting up that
01:55window well. Now, the book of incantations.
01:58Well, I went online, and I did a little search for witchcraft spells.
02:02And I found this thing here. I have no idea what it says.
02:05It kind of bizarre looking. So I went ahead and traced it, see?
02:10I created a. Layer there where I traced part of those spells.
02:14I did change them a little bit, because I didn't want anything to happen and I'm
02:18happy to say that no demons appeared, nothing.
02:22My face didn't turn green. Nothing happened.
02:26I didn't suddenly grow hair at night. So it's okay, I, I'm fine.
02:31But I created this text here. And I created this, little layer here,
02:35just to give me an idea so I can see on top of the spells as I was working.
02:41So, that's going to be my spells. So, getting back into here, I'm going to
02:45create the book itself. So, what I'm going to do is I'm going to
02:48create some shapes. That are going to be the edges of the book.
02:52So this is going to be, one side of the book, right here.
02:58And it comes down to here. Let's go down.
03:01Let's pull back a little bit. And it comes down to here.
03:05And we close this off. Then this is going to be the other side
03:07of the book. It's going to come out.
03:10Like so, and come down like that. Now this can kind of just overlap in
03:16there like that. Right, so we're going to finesse this a
03:19little bit, so there we go. So now we have this book that's opened up
03:23like that. These are going to be the different pages
03:26of my book. So I got to my Opacity, make sure we save those.
03:32All right so now the one in back here. I'm going to go ahead and get a color
03:35that I want my books to have. It's going to be kind of a parchment kind
03:38of a color. I'll get something like-- about like that.
03:44Okay, I'm going to go into a new layer on top of everything here and I'm going to
03:49call it Page Right. And fill that path with that color, okay?
03:58Now I look at it, so it's a little too yellow, so let's go in here and make it a
04:00little more beige. There, that looks a little better, so
04:03we'll fill that with that color. There, that's much better.
04:08Now we're going to add some textures to this and make it even more realistic.
04:12I'm going to select the second path, create a new layer, and we'll call this
04:18"Page Left." Take that path and fill that.
04:24Now we can turn over our paths. We have the basic book in place.
04:29Now I'm going to just do some very quick little touches here just so I can
04:33deliniate the book. We're going to add the texture in the
04:36next movie but right now all I want to do is go in here, let's set this up for our highlights.
04:41I'm just going to add some quick little tones in here just so I can kind of see
04:44where the book is. Right there's the edge of the book.
04:48So that now I can take this Formula that I trace over here.
04:52And it's layer of the formula itself, and we'll drag it into place like that, and
04:56we're going to bring it down into here. And we're going to duplicate this layer
05:02because we're going to need two of them. And we're going to turn one off now.
05:07We're going to work this one on top. Okay?
05:10So what we're going to do Make sure this off, and we'll work on that top one, and
05:13we'll call it spell. Spell Left.
05:17Now I'm going to go in here and distort this, so it's going to look like it is in
05:21fact, on this page. going to shrink it down a little bit.
05:29But I like that. That looks good.
05:32And then put it in position right here, and I'm going to distort it.
05:36Now let's pull back so that we can really see what I'm going to be doing here.
05:40And I'm going to go into Warp. And the wrap is where I'm going to create it.
05:45Let's just grab this center part. Let's bring this down.
05:49Bring this guy down, and we're going to just kind of bend this page right into
05:53place, right in there. Let's get this right here.
05:57And notice that the sides are going to get a little tighter.
05:59They're getting a little tighter because they're going around that edge of the
06:02book, and they're going to come down here.
06:06So we're going to slowly grab these handles and just bring them around so
06:10that this side of the book is just visible right in there.
06:15And we just kind of move these around until we have it just about where we want it.
06:20Like that. Now this page is curled, so let's make
06:23sure we curl these guys. Right in there, like that and let's bring
06:27this in just a little bit more. And tighten it up.
06:32Now we gotta follow the edge of that book and line it up with that, and there we go
06:36we click ok, and there's the left side of our page with the inscription in it.
06:42So now we're going to take the right side.
06:44We'll call it spell right, sounds like something the teacher would tell you.
06:49All right so I'm going to go in here and we're bring this over to the side.
06:53So it's not going to look the same because in fact that, we're seeing
06:56different parts of this thing. So, here we're going to go in there and
07:00distort this just as we did that side. We're going to go into Warp.
07:05First we make it a little smaller. Just a little bit smaller.
07:09That's about right. And then we're going to Warp it.
07:13I'm going to grab this handle bring it into here way into there let's pull back
07:18a little bit. And we're going to bring this guy up and
07:23then we're going to have these guys lined up right with that edge of that page.
07:31Right there, and then we start bringing these guys in.
07:34Now this is going to follow that curvature.
07:37Bring it down a little bit, and it's got to follow the curvature of the book.
07:41So we're going to just kind of grab these handles up, then just go around, bring
07:47this one over and down. And then we'll just start to move all
07:53these handles into place. There you see that the spell is now
07:59taking on the shape of our page. Open this up a little, and there we go,
08:05now we have our spell in place. And then in the next movie what we'll
08:09start to do is to give texture to the paper itself.
08:12

Aging the book
00:00Now were going to age the book of spell's.
00:03I'm going to get a little closer here and so we can see what was going to happen,
00:07very clearly. And the first thing were going to do is
00:11give those books some noise. Let's go up to the book pages.
00:15There's page left. That will give us a little bit of noise.
00:19Go in there and say, Add Noise. Just enough, just a little bit to the
00:22book there, just like that. Click OK, then we'll pick the page on the
00:27right and give it the same filter. I just press Command+F to apply the mass filter.
00:33For now, I'm going to give it another filter.
00:36I'm going to go in here to my Filter gallery.
00:39And there's a whole bunch of different filters.
00:41And the one that I've decided to use is Sponge.
00:44See sponge is going to give me. Kind of like a papyrish kind of look.
00:47So kind of look. So again, my brush size will make it a
00:50little bigger. We'll give it a little less definition.
00:53And make it a little smoother. Maybe, bring down that smoothness, there
00:57we go let's get our brush sizes try really small.
01:00That's starting to look a little more like a papyrish kind of a feel.
01:04I click OK and then there we have that. We'll do the same thing to this one and
01:09here you see that, right here it says Command+F, is the last filter.
01:13By the way, if I hit Option Command+F, it brings up the last filter with the
01:16document dialog box incase you want to apply some effects.
01:20So there we have that, so now. Now that we have this, we can start to
01:25really go in there and apply our highlights and stuff.
01:28So I'm going to go in here and I'm into page left.
01:31I'm going to start to really darken this a bit.
01:33Now I'm going to switch to highlights and then get it really dark in there, and
01:37then choose Shadows. Shadows is going to warm it up a little
01:41as you can see. Now I'm going to kind of warm up the edge
01:44of this book right through there like that.
01:47And then I got my other page, the page on the left, which is give it a little
01:52bit of that. And we'll go with some mid tones just to
01:56darken it a little more. And then we're going to go into this
01:59area, here. And we'll make the brush a little bigger
02:02and just add a little shading on that side, just like that.
02:06Okay, so now we're starting to get all, our nice little tones in place.
02:10Back to our page on left, and we'll just get a little more darkness right through
02:13there like that. "Kay?
02:15And we'll get really into that, deep little crevice in there.
02:22And really darkened that little corner like that.
02:25Same thing with the page on the right. Just kind of darken that little space inside.
02:31So there it is the pages are turned and so on.
02:34Now, we need to crinkle it up a little bit.
02:37So, what we're going to do here is, we're going to take the book on the right and
02:41turn it into a selection. All right.
02:45And give it a mask. Yeah as a mask.
02:48All right? We're going to take the page on the left.
02:52There you go. Give it a mask.
02:54Now, this particular mask. I'm going to expand a little bit.
02:58So, I'm in that mask. I'm going to go and use my white.
03:03And I'm just going to go and paint in a little more of that white.
03:06In fact, let's use our lasso here. Go right from the edge of the book here,
03:11right there at that edge, and expand that mask.
03:14And, you'll see why in a second. So, I make sure I'm in the mask, go ahead
03:18and fill it with white. "kay, I'm going to break up those edges
03:24with another filter. Now, let's just say I got the page on the
03:28left here and I applied the filter that I want to do.
03:32Now there are a lot of filters in the filter gallery here.
03:36There's a hole bunch of different filters, right?
03:38But there's one in particular that I like to use for this particular effect.
03:42And it's not an artistic. There's a bunch in here.
03:45And that one is called spatter. Now we can see what it's doing.
03:49See what it did? It added that.
03:51"Kay? That might be kind of cool.
03:53That might work. In fact, let's do that, that kind of
03:56looks good. See, it added to our papyrus effect.
04:01Do this, give it the same thing. that's looking really good.
04:05Nice happy surprise but that's that effect I'm looking for.
04:08What I'm going to do is I'm going to go to the mask and the mask is where I'm
04:12going to apply that filter. So I'm going to go in there and go to my
04:17Filter gallery and I'll be in my Spatter filter and you see what its doing to the mask.
04:24Well I'm going to go in there and, bring down that radius a bit.
04:28And bring up the smoothness. Just like that.
04:30Bring up that, and bring up the smoothness.
04:32You see what it's doing to the edge? So now I'm doing it to the mask, so when
04:36I click OK. There you see what it did to the edge of
04:39the, the page. Now this one, the page I don't want this
04:43are here to get soften so that's why I extended the mask.
04:48I'm going to apply that same filter to that mask and there you see that it
04:51crinkled up the top. Now, one final touch I'm going to do is
04:55I'm going to give each one another layer which I want to clip inside of it.
05:00And I'm going to get a much darker tone, say like a black.
05:04And I'm going to get a brush, paint brush.
05:06And I'll use one of these spatter brushes, like this one right here.
05:10"Kay? Which, right now, is going to do that.
05:12And what I want to do. And, and the opacity's lowered.
05:15What I want to do is go into my brush engine.
05:17Where I'm going to, increase the spacing, about like that.
05:22Go into Shape Dynamics, size a-, and the angles.
05:26All the way to 100% and that's it. I'm going to now start to kind of just
05:30add some additional dirt and grime to those areas up there.
05:35I'm hitting it a couple of times because I have a lower opacity on my brush, which
05:39means it's going to allow me to affecting separately.
05:43And I get a slightly bigger brush and I can just apply a couple little tones in
05:46different areas. So you see I'm kind of dirtying the book.
05:51Giving it some age. I'm going to go to the page on the right
05:53and I'll just throw a couple of little dirt marks here and there and then along
05:56the top. I make the brush a little smaller and I
06:00go, just like I did with the other one. I'm just going to add some dirt along the
06:03top there. Right along that top edge.
06:08And what I'll do is, I'll just hit it a couple times.
06:11Just so it starts to get that, that sense of just wear and tear.
06:16Now, in the next movie, what we're going to do is start to create the
06:19vessels that are going to contain the mixing of the concoction that we're
06:23making for our spell.

Creating the 3D urn
00:00So, what I'm going to do now is to create the urn that's pouring a liquid into a cup.
00:06I got a file here, where I want to create my little urn.
00:09So I'm going to bring out the Rulers, Command+R and I'm going to pull out a Guide.
00:16Just so I have a nice little area that I can figure out this, how wide my little
00:20urn is going to be. So, I'll take my Pen tool and I'm going
00:24to start. Click there and come down here.
00:28Now let's start to create the urn itself. I'm going to pull this out and create
00:32this little shape. It's going to come in like this.
00:36And it's going to have this little lip on top.
00:40It's going to come around. And actually, let's do it that way.
00:44Let's just pull it like this and I'm going to very quickly just finish this
00:48off there. Now, let's finesse this.
00:51So, I want this nice little lip up here. So I'm going to curve this in a little
00:56better like that, make this a little tighter.
01:00It's got this nice little lip on top and there's this nice long kind of an urn
01:05like that, okay? So now I can clear my guide, and this
01:09inside line doesn't really matter because you're not going to see it.
01:13So I'm going to just clear the guide and turn off my ruse.
01:17So, now that I have this, I'm going to save 3D.
01:22New extrusion form selected path. It's going to ask me if I want to switch
01:25to a 3D space. I'm going to say, yes.
01:27That way it's going to set up all my panels for 3D object.
01:30And there, you can see that it did, exactly that.
01:33It just took my little shape, and it extruded it.
01:36See? All right, so, what I really want is I
01:38want to take. Right there.
01:41I select the object. And you see that things change for the
01:43properties, right? because now I'm selecting the object itself.
01:46There's the camera, here's the light, and so on.
01:48So here's my object, which is made up of all these different parts.
01:52So I select the object, and here, the shape preset.
01:56I'm going to go in there and select one of these other sets.
01:59You see there's a whole bunch of different sets in here.
02:01I'm going to select this one. And there you can see what it's done to
02:04my little urn. Now that I see it, I'm going to backtrack.
02:10And that's the beauty of this is that I can go in there and totally backtrack.
02:13So I'm going to go in here and go back into Clear.
02:17And I want it to be a little narrower I want it to be a little thinner.
02:21So I'm just going to just kind of take this whole section right here and bring
02:25it in a little more. So there, so it's not going to be so fat.
02:29I won't want this big giant urn. I want it a little more delicate, kind of
02:33like that. In fact, what we might do now is just
02:36kind of lengthen this a little bit. Just like this.
02:40So that has a little more of a curve to it.
02:44And we'll just kind of, bring this up a little, there we go.
02:48That's going to be a little smoother. Now, we can go in there and from select
02:53the path. There it is.
02:55And now we can choose that again. And now we're going to get a much
02:58smoother kind of an urn. There we go, it's a little more delicate.
03:01Okay, so now I can start to do all kinds of things to this.
03:05Well for one thing, I'm going to go in to the extrusion material right there.
03:10What you see this came up, had the materials changed, the property.
03:14I'm going to choose one of these preset materials that it comes with.
03:18So I'm going to go in there and let's say I picked this one right here.
03:22Now I'm going to leave that color, that color's really good, I like that color.
03:25Now that's going to work right there for us.
03:29And that's going to be the color of our little urn.
03:31Now we're going to do a few things to this though.
03:33We're going to go in there and start to play with it a little.
03:38So we got here our layers. And you notice there's this orange peel
03:42diffuse, going on here. So I'm going to double click on that.
03:46Which is going to bring me into totally different file.
03:49Which is that material. I'm going to pull this out.
03:54So I can see my urn in back. because, as I create something it's going
03:57to allow me to see it. In there.
04:00So let's just pull back just a little bit and I have my urn.
04:05I'm going to just draw something. In a layer, right here on top, I'm
04:11going to draw some shape. I'm going to go over here and just draw
04:14this little kind of a, make a brown shape here.
04:18let's get a deep brown. Like that, and I'll fill that.
04:22Okay? Now, I'm on top of a curve, so let's
04:25bring it up on top here, and I'm going to save, okay?
04:29Now, not seeing anything? Okay, so that's because this thing is
04:32probably off on a side there, so let's just move it over to about here and save.
04:37There, see? It appeared in place.
04:41All right, so it's a little thick. So what I'm going to do Is I'm just going
04:44to shrink it down a little bit. It becomes the nice little line and save
04:49it, and there you see that it has shrunken in size.
04:54I'm going to bring it way down to about here, save that.
04:58There it is. I'm going to take another one and bring it.
05:01Right about here and let's save that. So there we have another one which I'm
05:07going to just, I want to see it in that little area.
05:10So I'm going say save. There we go, so now we have that happening.
05:15Now what I'm going to do is, and I'm going to do it in a whole another layer,
05:18just in case. I'm going to go in here and start to draw.
05:22Another series of shapes, so let me get in closer here.
05:26And I don't want to resize my window, I want to keep it small.
05:28All right, so, then we're going to go in here and create some shapes.
05:32We're going to go in here and click right there, and hold down my Shift key to
05:36constrain it to a 45 degree angle. And let's pull it out all the way to there.
05:42All right, and going to duplicate that half right next to it, like that. OK? Now I'm going to close them off.
05:45Just like that and I'm going to pull this one down just a little.
05:47Like that. I'm going to click this guy and come down
05:49here and let's close it off. And, I'm goign to go ahead and fill that
06:04path with a, and my paths are not visible, so let's bring up our Path Window.
06:10There we go, go, I'm going to go in there and say fill that with that little brown.
06:17Okay, so now I got that shape, what I'm going to do is, I'm going to select that shape.
06:25Bring it over here, and do a little Flip Vertical on it, and have it join right in
06:30there like that. Okay, that's looking good.
06:36So now, I'm going to select the whole thing, duplicate it down, just like this.
06:42Now I'm going to want this to be a nice little point here.
06:44So, what we're going to do ; actually, you know what?
06:48We could just make it not be a point, there we go.
06:50Just make it flat like that, that looks good.
06:53I'm going to Save that. See where these appear.
06:55Now they're obviously on the other side. So let's pull back, and I'm going to
06:59Select them. And duplicate them, and duplicate them,
07:07go like that. Now let's save, there they are.
07:11They're coming around. Duplicate them one more time.
07:16All the way down there, like that, and Save.
07:19And there, we see that we have this nice little design to our urn.
07:24Now, everything works in here, all the different features.
07:27So, I can go in there, and let's just say that the, we go to those layers and we'll
07:30take that first layer. That's the one with the little lines, and
07:36we'll give it a little Stroke. Just give it a little Stroke, and that
07:40Stroke, we'll make it a let's say we make it a red color.
07:44Click OK, and there we see we have our little red Stroke around our design and
07:48We'll make that stroke a little thinner. Bring it down to about 1 so it's just a
07:53little thin line. Save it and there we see that we have the
07:57little red stroke. We can go to this one here and on this
08:00one we'll give that one a stroke as well. And we'll make that stroke a two and
08:06we'll make it another color. Let's say we make it a, green color.
08:13Kind of a dark green like this, click OK, save it, and there we see that we have
08:17this little design. So now, we click this say goodbye, we
08:21saved it so it didn't make any change, everything was fine.
08:27So now what we can do is to start to manipulate this little object.
08:31Let's go back to our 3D and grab him And you can start to play around with this thing.
08:38So, we go in here and we'll select them. We'll select our object and layers.
08:44There is the object. All right, select it.
08:47And I'm going to go in here and I'm going to twirl them.
08:51See, going to twirl them, so he looks like that.
08:55That's the way this little object is going to look.
08:57Just like that. And now, the lighting.
09:00The lighting for this little object. We're going to go in here and go into the
09:03infinite lighting. Now, our candle is coming from down here
09:07in our scene. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to
09:09move the lighting so that it's coming from that direction, see?
09:13Just like that, now we get this nice kind of effect just like this.
09:18So we have this little urn that's being lit by that candle from somewhere and
09:22there's our little urn. Let's just move it, give it a little more
09:26light like that, there we go. We have our little urn that's pouring
09:30this liquid. So, I just go in there and at this point
09:34I could say, Render it. I rendered the object.
09:40Now this is going to take a, a few minutes.
09:42It going to go in there and slowly start to render this and when it's done
09:46rendering we going to rasterize it and bring it into our other file.
09:51The file with the book and the wall and everything else.
09:54

Creating the pouring effect
00:00Now that our little urn has gone and rasterized.
00:05it took about, 11 minutes to do it. And I made one little tiny change to it.
00:09Now that it's rasterized, I want to go in here and say Layer > Rasterize 3D Object.
00:14That means it's going to bring it down to a normal layer.
00:17So, I'm going to bring this down here and bring that layer into my scene here.
00:24Okay? So, let's return our workspace, back to Essentials.
00:30There's our normal workspace. And I got this little urn up here.
00:33So I'm going to shrink it down a little bit.
00:35Let's bring it down. Let's make it a little smaller.
00:38Just this little urn up in the top here like that, right there like that.
00:42Maybe turn it just a little. Okay, because down here, what I've done
00:47is I've got a little cup that I created, very much the same way you would that I
00:51did the urn. It's just a path.
00:55It's just a different shape and I just used a different texture which has a
00:59thicker bump to it. Lighting source is the same, but it's
01:02basically the same kind of a thing. So now, what I'm going to do is let's
01:06take this cup and move it down. Let's get our urn, move it over a little
01:10bit, and maybe shrink it just a little bit more.
01:14There we go, that's a little better. And bring it up there.
01:18And then, the little cup down here, I'm going to make him a little bit smaller, too.
01:23Just a little bit, and move it down just a tad.
01:27So now, what I'm going to do is create the liquid that's going in between these two.
01:33So in a layer on top of all this, I'm going to go in here and let's pull back a
01:37little bit. All right, I'm going to select this nice
01:41little rectangular shape right here, like so nice big rectangular shape, and I'm
01:46going to fill it with the color. Now, the color right now doesn't matter,
01:51because I'm going to now create the colors that I'm going to use.
01:54The thing is that a layer has to have something in it for the first filter I'm
01:57going to use to really work. So I'm going to create a kind of a green liquid.
02:03Okay, green, it'd be a nice color to add with all this other stuff here.
02:07So I'm going to pick a kind of a really deep green, like that.
02:12Even deeper, almost getting into the blacks here.
02:16Okay. Now, for the background color, I'm
02:18going to pick a lighter version of that green right there and click OK.
02:23And what I'm going to do now is I'm going to go in here and create the filter
02:27and that's filter called fibers. And fibers is going to go in here and, go
02:32in there and add a little more variance to it.
02:37And click OK and there it creates this nice kind of a texture like that.
02:42Now, I'm going to give another filter. I'm going to go in here and apply a
02:45little Gaussian Blur just to soften it up, just a little bit, just a little.
02:51There you go and another filter. There's going to be a whole series of
02:55filters here. going to give it a Motion blur and it's
02:57going to go straight up and down. That will make it 90 and maybe a little less.
03:03There that, that looks good. Click Ok.
03:07That's getting there. But now I'm going to give it yet another filter.
03:11I want some sheens in there, so I'm going to go in here.
03:13And in my Filter Gallery, I have a, a definitely not a spatter, which I used to
03:19create the Book texture before. I'm going to go in here and it's not in
03:25this group, and it's in artistic. It's a little thing called Plastic Wrap.
03:31And you see what Plastic Wrap has done? It's created these nice little sheens there.
03:35So I'm going to kind of punch those up a little bit and punch that all the way up.
03:39So we get some really strong highlights in there.
03:40Let's get that detail. And we'll smooth it out just a little bit
03:44and click OK. So now, we got those nice little shiny
03:47things in there. One more filter and that is a filter
03:51that's also in our Filter Gallery. And what, that, kind of crazy there, but
03:57that's not the one we're going to use. We're going to go out of Artistic and
04:02it's in Stylus, nope, not Stylus, it's Sketch.
04:06That's the one. It's another thing called Chrome.
04:09Chrome is going to add all this additional craziness to the image here.
04:13So I'm going to go in there and say Chrome.
04:16Click OK. So now, what it's done is it added all
04:19this additional stuff, but what I want to do is apply that filter in a mode.
04:24So it doesn't destroy what's underneath. Yes, a mode, there was no mode in the
04:28dialog box, but the modes are applied after the fact.
04:31So I come over here and you notice that there's a Fade Filter Gallery so I'm
04:34going to go in there and here's where the mode is so I'm going to set this up to Overlay.
04:40And Overlay, there we go. It added all these additional sheens and
04:43almost like little bubbles in there. And added the other effects of Chrome to
04:47my existing shape and click OK. And there's my basis for my pouring
04:53liquid, which I'm now going to put that in Hard Light mode.
04:58So it's going to kind of really have this deep kind of a look to it or maybe we
05:02want to play with soft light. Let's see what that's going to, no,
05:06that's totally lost. Let's go with that Hard Light mode.
05:09Okay, and now, what I'm going to do is I'm going to go and warp it.
05:13So I'm going to go and say Warp. And I'm going to grab this guy and bring
05:17it all the way over, this guy over ( UNKNOWN) This guy this way, and this guy
05:21that way. Now I'm going to grab these handles.
05:25These are the handles that control the up and above, so I'm going to grab this guy
05:28over and drag this guy this way, okay? Same thing with these guys up here.
05:33I'm going to drag this over and drag this guy over.
05:35Now, I'm going to play with these until I have just the kind of shape that I want,
05:39because right now, they're kind of just pulling themselves away.
05:44And I want to just play with these so we have a nice kind of a liquidy kind of a
05:48look right there like that. There we go.
05:51And let's open these up just a little more, there we go.
05:56All right, click OK. And there we'll see that we have our
05:59pouring liquid. So I add the pouring liquid.
06:03What I'm going to do now is I'm going to rotate it and actually don't even need to
06:08rotate it. What I'm going to do is shrink it down a
06:11little bit, because about the size that we want, thicken it up a little.
06:16Right there, like that. Now, I'm going to rotate it, because I
06:18don't want to lose anything on the sides. I'm going to rotate it 90 degrees, like
06:22that, and I'm going to give it a warp. Let's move it into our scene, there we go.
06:27I'm going to give it a warp, another warp.
06:29And this time, I'm going to use one of the existing ones like a Little Arch,
06:33just like that. I'm going to bring it down, I don't want
06:36it so strong. There we go, click OK.
06:39And now, I can go in there and rotate this to form the liquid pouring out of my
06:46urn and going into my cup, down below. Put it in position right there like that.
06:56And maybe we might want to stretch it out a little bit.
06:59There we go, that's looking much better. Right there, like that.
07:03So now, what I need to do for the final touch is make it look like it is in fact pouring.
07:08Let's do one more little rotation, just like that.
07:12That's better. Okay.
07:13So now, I'll come in real close. Real close like this and I'm going to
07:18give this a mask. In the Mask, I'm going to go in there and
07:21just kind of paint in with black. I'll make sure I've got a regular,
07:26hard-edged, it's just a little bit harder.
07:30And I'm going to go in there and start to paint in.
07:32And make sure that my opacity back up to 100%.
07:35I'm going to paint in into the mask, bring this down.
07:40So, we just expose that whole section of the, of our, our urn and just close it up
07:45in there a little bit. And you know what, let's unlock that and
07:52move it up in there. There we go.
07:56Not going to move the mask, we're going to move the liquid.
07:58Now you notice that it seems when I move it, the mask remains where it was.
08:02So I just want to get it right into there like that.
08:05Now, we go back to the Mask. And we just going to go in there and just
08:09kind of hide this whole little section down up there.
08:14And then, down here, we're going to hide this little section of the cup right
08:17there where the liquid is falling into the cup.
08:20Now, let's just see this just as one layer.
08:23Oh okay, so I can see what I'm erasing, because a second ago I couldn't see
08:27because the cup was so dark for now. There we go and we pull back and we see
08:32that we have liquid pouring into our cup. Just in case, I'm going to take our cup
08:37and straighten it a little bit. So it makes our aim look a little better,
08:42doesn't it? There we go.
08:44It's pouring into the center of the cup and there we go.
08:49Now, in this final movie, what we're going to do is create some kind of steam
08:52or something coming out of this cup, because we're conjuring up a weird spell here.
08:59

Making vapor
00:00So the last thing this thing needs is a little vapor coming out of here, because
00:03the effect of this liquid being mixed should have some kind of bizarre effect.
00:08So, we're going to throw some little vapor just coming out of this cup down below.
00:13So I created a last layer here which I'll call vapor and with white, I'm going to
00:17get my Paintbrush tool. And has gotten a little smaller here.
00:22Let's just draw a couple of white tones in here, and let's go to 100% Opacity and
00:26make sure that I'm in my Paintbrush, 100%, yep.
00:30And, okay, let's get that brush a little bigger, and there we are.
00:35Just draw a couple little shapes right in here like this.
00:39That's a good start, and with my Smudge tool, what I'm going to do is I'm
00:42going to make it a little bigger and I just drag these guys down just like this.
00:48Just kind of drag them in and drag them down so that they're forming like this
00:52stuff that's just seeping down and is flowing down from the edges of a cup.
00:58There you go, okay. So now, I'm going to go in here and bring
01:03down the Opacity for that. So I get just this little, kind of a flow
01:08like that. I'm going to create a second layer on top
01:12of that, I'll call it Vapor 2, and we'll start the same way.
01:18Throw a couple of white tones on top, and just a few this time right there and
01:23again with the smudging, I'll go in there and start smudging these down.
01:30See, so they start to form a second set, which we can go in there and bring down
01:33the Opacity on that one. See, so now we got this second set on top
01:38of the first. We're going to make this one a little stronger.
01:41And then, maybe if we want a little puffiness on top, I can actually go to
01:44those clouds. These are the clouds we used before, right?
01:47So, I'm going to go in here, I'm going to kind of select this little range right in
01:51here, okay? And what I'm going to do is going to,
01:54just drag these into this layer right here, right there, and we're going to
01:58shrink them down, way down and put them right up on top here, and let's bring it
02:02down some more. And we'll kind of, give it a little
02:08rotation there, put it right on top here, right there like that.
02:12And I'm going to go in, and go into Hue Saturation and get rid of some of that
02:15color in there, we don't need that color, and let's make a little bit darker and
02:18let's bring up some detail on those clouds.
02:22So, I'm going to go in to my Levels and just kind of bring in some darks, just
02:25like that and make those lights much lighter, there we go.
02:29And maybe bring those midtones in, just so we can get a little more detail in there.
02:34Hit those darks, click OK and I put that layer in Screen mode, so only those
02:37little white clouds are going to show through.
02:41And we're going down to Levels and just make it a little darker, make those dark
02:44see so that little halo there can disappear.
02:48Click OK, and then I'm going to give that a mask and in the mask, I'm just going to
02:52very lightly paint. I'm going to bring down the Opacity, and
02:56just paint into this area here, just so that we kind of lose that little edge of
03:00our little smoke there. And there, we see that now we have this
03:04weird mixture being mixed from one urn into the cup and who knows what we're
03:08conjuring up.

Conclusion
Goodbye
00:00So there you have this installment of Dreamscapes.
00:04Now, one thing to keep in mind is, they're Dreamscapes.
00:07They're the kind of things that your imagination just conjures up.
00:11All you have to do is have a good imagination, have a couple of good
00:14dreams, or just read a book and get inspired, and then, those visuals that on
00:18your mind, you can make come to life. It's just a question of understanding
00:24what to do in Photoshop, and how to pick the right pictures, and you could do
00:27anything your brain can imagine. Have a good time and have fun.
