Photoshop CS4 for Photographers is an essential course for any digital photographer who wants to master the software's vast array of image enhancement techniques. Professional photographer and instructor Chris Orwig uses his own compelling images to demonstrate how the power of Photoshop can make photographers more passionate about their work. He covers many aspects of the application, such as working with RAW images, using curves and levels, making images snap, and enhancing bland photographs by converting them to black and white. While this is a chapter on selections, at the same time we have to figure out how we can use our selections in order to make corrections and then make those corrections even better. And that's what we are going to look at in this movie. We are going to zoom in on the image, Command+Plus on a Mac/Ctrl+Plus on a PC. One of the things that I noticed when I zoom in is that I have a few problem areas that I need to work on. Well, for starters I have a problem where I have blue on her face, and that's not very good and I have a little bit of this red fringing around the edge of the image. How can I fix those things? When I go ahead and click in the mask I'm going to grab my Brush tool.
What I'm going to do is then select black as my foreground color. I have a nice small brush. I'll press the right bracket key, make it nice and small. Shift+Left bracket key, that will make it really soft or from the Options bar take all the hardness off. And all that I'm going to do here is simply paint the blue away and I just want to make sure to get that out and off of her face and off of her ear and I'll go ahead and go on this side as well. So again just a simple masking technique there to fix up that color. Okay, well that looks good. Well, what about the fringing? Well, this gets a little bit more complicated, but here's what we can do. We can click on our mask, grab the Lasso tool. In this case I'm going to select an area where I see this fringing and I'm going to select just the area that's along the edge of the concrete because I know that that edge is all very similar and I can see that red fringing. I'll zoom in a little more perhaps so you can see what I'm talking about. The little red dots there.
Well, how can I fix that? Navigate to my Filter pulldown menu and then choose Other and Maximum. Now what this allows me to do, and I will exaggerate this, it allows me to extend that mask. You can see that there, see how it's extending out? And by doing that, I'm just going to extend this out just a pixel and click OK, and then look at our before and after. Command+Z, there is before and then there is after, maybe we zoom in a little bit further and there is our before and after. Again it's just extending that out just a touch in order to maximize the white area of the mask. Now Minimize would have brought that in, would have revealed a little bit more red.
So I'll then navigate to Select > Deselect. Okay, well so far so good. We have seen how we can use that Filter. Well, that Filter doesn't always work. Like let's go ahead and try that Filter up here along the hat. I'll make a selection around the edge of the top portion of this mask. Again, so I'm making a selection. That selection is only modifying my mask. Navigate to Filter > Other and I'll choose Maximum this time. Now when I do that it extends that out. I see that I have even more problems. So that's not going to work for me. I'll hit Cancel. I'll go to Filter > Other, and try the other option, Minimum. Well, then I have even again more of a problem. So I can't push this one way or the other. I can't refine this edge any further so to speak. So let's hit Cancel.
What can you do in these situations? Well in these situations we want to zoom way in. Actually that's a little bit too far because of that grid's distracting. So I'll zoom in this far. I'm going to then create a new layer by clicking on the New Layer icon and I'll name this layer color because I'm going to take this layer to a blending mode of Color. You can do that by clicking on your blending mode pulldown menu and then choosing Color. I'll then grab my Brush tool. Now with my Brush tool selected I'll hold down the Option key on a Mac/ Alt key on a PC and then I'll sample a color and you know notice as I click around my image the color is updated here as far as what color I'm going to paint.
Well, now that I have this nice blue, I'm just going to look to add this on top of this color fringing here so I'm going to go around the edge of this. Now if I go too far the nice thing about this is I can always erase what I have done, and again, I want to be pretty careful here, I want to have a pretty small brush, nice soft edge I'm just looking to try to hide that red fringing that I have, and I really can't fix that red fringing any other way with this image because the mask refine trick isn't going to work for me, so I'm going to really need to get in close and begin to paint it out that way. So let's take a look at how we are doing. Here is our before and after.
Now the nice thing about having this on its own layer is I can lower the Opacity so I can also just take the edge off the color a little bit, and so here we can see I don't have it at full -intensity, but I'm just backing that off. Let's double-click the Zoom tool to take that to 200%, see how that edge looks, well that looks pretty good. Now this is a pretty small file because I have downsized it in order to be able to include it in the training. So with your larger images you are going to have to pay either more or less attention to those details. I wanted to show you that technique. Although it's a little bit of an advanced technique and I know I have shown you these advanced techniques early in this chapter, but I want to show you those so that you can begin to see how you can use some of these tools which seem apparently pretty easy, and they are for the most part, pretty easy, like the Quick Select tool. But then, how you can then use this relatively easy tool and combine this tool with some other techniques and tools that we have like masking or a Color Range in order to come up with astounding results.
Now with this particular image have I completed what I need to do? No, there is a little bit of more detail work I need to do over here and over here, yet my hope is that you picked up some valuable techniques as that I have shown you how I would approach this issue of changing the color with these different tools and techniques.
