When you create an adjustment layer inside Photoshop you have the ability to set some options for it as you create it. But that doesn't happen by default. So if you click on the New Adjustment Layer icons here in the Adjustment panel or you choose one of them from the menu in the bottom of the Layers panel here, you just get the layer created for you. So I just clicked on Levels and voila! There is the adjustment layer created for you. I'm going to undo that. Instead, hold down the Option key on the Mac or Alt on the Windows and that gives you a chance to name it as you create it. You can set it to clip the adjustment layer to adjust the layer directly underneath it instead of all the layers underneath it.
You can Color code it if you want, set its blend mode and its Opacity. And sometimes it's just helpful to set those options before or as you create the adjustment layer. So that for instance, if it's a blend mode change you actually see the effect of that adjustment through that blend mode instead of having to set it after you make the adjustment. So, if you want that option, remember it by holding down the Option key or the Alt key on Windows.
