With the release of Photoshop CS6, Adobe introduced the ability to edit video footage. Author Rich Harrington guides you through this brand-new workflow, from building a sequence to working with audio and exporting your video in a variety of high-quality formats. The course also covers how Photoshop's strongest feature, its image enhancement toolset, translates to video, from fixing under- or overexposed footage, performing color balancing, and adding vibrance and contrast to special effects, such as converting to black and white and using Smart Filters to soften skin.
You've already seen the vibrance adjustment in action, but I want to explore in greater depth. Vibrance is the ability to control saturation, as well as selective saturation, that particular comes in handy when dealing with flesh tones, green grass and blue skies. In this particular image here that I've selected, the sky is little washed out, I don't want to boost the elephant color too much, and I don't want posterization. If I use a standard saturation adjustment and I crank the saturation, you'll see that the image starts to get posterized and quickly looks artificial. I'll go ahead and click the Delete icon to get rid of that.
Instead with vibrance you have Saturation and Vibrance. This Saturation is different and it doesn't posterize like the other, you can crank that all the way up and still have a very clean image in most cases. What I am going to do here is raise the overall Saturation and then put a lot of emphasis on Vibrance, which is going to boost the non-skin tones. So as you see in there, we start to get the blue skies really popping. If I need to, I can click to add a second instance and pop the blue skies even more, so the bluegrass and water is coming through nicely.
Remember, you might want to combine this with the Curves adjustment to go after some of those particular areas to better expose the shot, but if we turn those off and back on, you'll see it made a dramatic difference without a lot of work.
