Learning how to use Adobe Photoshop efficiently and effectively is the best way to get the most out of your pixels and create stunning imagery. Master the fundamentals of this program with Julieanne Kost, and discover how to achieve the results you want with Photoshop and its companion programs, Bridge and Camera Raw. This comprehensive course covers nondestructive editing techniques using layers, masking, adjustment layers, blend modes, and Smart Objects. Find out how to perform common editing tasks, including lens correction, cropping and straightening, color and tonal adjustments, noise reduction, shadow and highlight detail recovery, sharpening, and retouching. Julieanne also shows how to achieve more creative effects with filters, layer effects, illustrative type, and the Photomerge command for creating panoramas and composites.
Blend notes are the key to adding textures and kind of a grunge overlay on top of a photograph. So I'll select both of these images in Bridge and use Cmd+O on the Mac or Ctrl+O on Windows in order to open them. Now, I can use my keyboard shortcut, Command+Shift+T, in order to tile these. That would be Control+Shift+T on Windows, but only if you followed along on the video where we actually assigned those keyboard shortcuts to tile the images. If not, just choose Window, Arrange and then Tile.
Now that I can see both of my images I want to make sure that I have the Move tool selected. I'll click and make sure that the paper image is the one I have selected. And then I'll click and drag. But before I release my cursor on top of the hydrangea, I'm going to hold down the Shift key and that's going to place this paper texture directly on top and centered in that other document. Okay, I no longer need the paper file open, so I'll click on it, and then we can close it.
Since we still have that Move tool selected I can use the keyboard shortcut Shift+plus to move down through the different blend modes. So I like the multiple blend mode, although it's a little too strong so let's keep going down. And see what else we have. I have a feeling that when I get to Overlay and Soft Light, those are going to be the two Blend modes that I like. Sure enough, there's Overlay, and there's Soft Light. I think I can actually stop here. I don't even need to go through the rest of the Blend modes. I like this effect. If I wanted to decrease the effect a little bit, I could just just change the opacity.
Again since I have that Move tool selected, if I tap the "5" key we can lower that opacity to 50%. So there you have it. A simple way to add a texture overlay to your image. Of course, you can also experiment with adding color texture files to images, and see what interesting effects you can achieve.
