Introduction
Previewing the final project
00:00(music playing)
00:04Hi! This is Chris Converse and this is a course on adding graphics and animation to a video.
00:08We're going to be taking artwork form another Photoshop file, wrapping the elements in smart
00:12objects and creating an animation at the beginning of a video.
00:15We're also going to be taking the video and cutting it up in pieces to remove frames that
00:19we don't want, and customizing the branding and the experience of the video.
00:23And when we're done we'll have a branded video that we can use in other interactive
00:26projects including websites, digital magazines, PDF, ePubs and iBooks.
00:31So I hope this course sounds interesting to you and if so, let's get started.

About the exercise files
00:00If you're a premium subscriber to the lynda.con Online Training Library, you'll have access
00:04to the exercise files.
00:05These exercise files include an MPEG-4 video and a design_elements Photoshop file, where
00:10we're going to be taking artwork and moving it into a Photoshop file that will include this video.
00:15Now if you don't have access to the exercise files, you can work with any video that Photoshop
00:18supports, and there's a bunch of formats it supports, and you can use any artwork that
00:22you create inside of Photoshop to follow along.
00:25And now that we're familiar with the exercise files, next we'll take this MPEG-4 file and bring
00:29it into Photoshop and start our project.

1. Adding and Animating Artwork
Getting video into Photoshop
00:00Now I'm going to show you one of two ways that you can get a video into your Photoshop file.
00:04First, let's come up to the File menu, let's choose New, let's create a new Canvas at 640 x 402
00:10pixels, this matches the pixel dimension of the MPEG-4 we're going to bring in, so then click OK.
00:16Now inside of here let's come up to the Window menu, let's come down to Timeline.
00:21Now as I mentioned in the introduction video, we're only going to be supporting CS6 and
00:26later, CS6 is the first version that has this Timeline panel.
00:30Now if you'd like to see some techniques for creating animated artwork inside of Photoshop
00:34CS3 Extended, through CS5.5 Extended, I have a video in my Edge Essentials training that
00:39covers creating keyframes and animations inside of those versions of Photoshop.
00:44So back here inside of Photoshop CS6, I'm going to come up here to the Canvas. I'm going
00:51to zoom out here a little bit.
00:52Now I have my Timeline down here at the bottom taking up a lot of space, as we start adding
00:56artwork and animating individual elements this Timeline is going to get pretty full.
00:59So I'm going to work with my canvas much smaller up here.
01:02Now the first thing we're going to do, is come down here and click on the Create Video Timeline.
01:07Once I do that all of the video controls will come up and to add a video into our project
01:10we can come over here and click on the plus (+) sign.
01:13Let's come up to the Exercise Files, let's choose the video.mpg4, then click Open.
01:19This is going to do 2 things, one it's going to bring the video into the Timeline where we
01:23can click our playhead and scrub the video, and we can also see that we have a Video Group
01:27over here in the Layers panel.
01:29Now Video Group is to align a series of clips and do more traditional video editing.
01:34However, for this course we're going to be using one video and adding our own graphics to it.
01:38So the second approach that we can take is to close this document --don't save-- and simply
01:44come under the Photoshop menu and choose File > Open, select our MPEG-4 video, and simply click Open.
01:51Doing this will have Photoshop automatically import the video and activate the Timeline.
01:56Now with this in place, I mentioned before we don't want to use a Video Group, so I'm
01:59going to grab this layer, drag it out of the Video Group and then select a Video Group,
02:05and delete it. So at this point we have simply just one video along our Timeline.
02:11Finally let's come up to the File menu, let's choose Save.
02:15Now in the desktop, let's call this myVideo.psd, and then hit Save.
02:21Now it is worth noting that Photoshop is not embedding that entire video inside of the Photoshop
02:25file, it is making a reference inside of this Photoshop file to the source video that's
02:29on the hard drive.
02:30And now that we have a video inside of Photoshop, next we'll start making some edits by cutting
02:33this clip up.
Collapse this transcript
Splitting video clips
00:00So now we're going to making some edits to this video. In the lower portion of the timeline
00:04panel, we have a scale down here. As we move this scale up and down this will change how
00:09much of the timeline you can see and what increments these little labels will show up in.
00:13So here we can see we have 2, 4, 6, these are frames, if we move this down, we'll see things
00:21here in terms of seconds.
00:24Now Photoshop is making this determination based on the source video.
00:26If we come over here to the flyout menu and come down to Set Timeline Frame Rate, you can change
00:31the frame rate here.
00:32So right now we're looking at 24 frames per second. Let's click OK. So if I go between
00:382 seconds and 3 seconds here, there's 24 frames, and we can see in the lower left hand part
00:43of the Timeline panel we're currently sitting on 2 seconds and 1 frame.
00:47And as I move these back and forth you can see individual frames inside of the Photoshop Timeline panel.
00:52So what we're going to do here is make an edit.
00:55So let's move this up a little bit. Let's scrub the timeline out. I want to find about
01:0010 seconds. Let's come up into the Timeline panel. Let's click to activate the playhead.
01:05Let's scrub this back and forth.
01:06Now the first edit I want to make is I want to get rid of this dissolve that we have
01:11to a logo or a title page before we go out to the man being interviewed.
01:17So let's come back out to about 10 seconds and 20 frames. Again we can see that in our
01:25lower left hand corner here. I want to split this clip here. So with the playhead here,
01:29let's come over here to the scissors. Now when I click on the scissors what this is going
01:33to do is split this, and since we're not working inside of a video layer group we're
01:38going to get these on two different layers.
01:40So notice the Layers panel now shows me two individual clips.
01:44So let's continue to scrub this. Let's scrub out until the end of that title frame right
01:49when dips to black. That happens at 14 seconds and 4 frames. Let's come up and spilt this again.
01:56Now I don't want this middle clip, so I'll select it, hit Delete, notice that it deletes
02:01on the timeline and in the Layers panel.
02:04Let's come up here, let's grab this clip and let's just drag it back.
02:10So I'll leave it right at the end of the first clip, so now if we scrub the timeline we'll
02:12see that we go from this clip, it jumps immediately to the beginning black, and then the man being
02:18interviewed fades in.
02:20So now that we've split that video clip, next we'll create a transition between the two.
Collapse this transcript
Moving and transitioning video
00:00Now to create a dissolve between these two clips, let's grab the playhead. Let's bring
00:04it up between the two.
00:04I'm going to come down here and scale this up a little bit, so I can start to see some of the frames.
00:09I want to overlap this approximately 10 frames so this ends at the 20 frame mark, and the
00:1610 frame mark is somewhere around here. So let's grab this clip. Let's drag it back so
00:21that they overlap each other.
00:24Now with this clip selected on the top let's come over here to the Transitions. Let's grab
00:29the transition and just drag and drop it right on top of the clip.
00:32Now we'll see this ramp here showing us the duration of this clip. Let's come out here
00:35to the end. We'll get this little edit symbol here. Let's click and drag.
00:41Let's drag this back so that the transition of the fade in happens before the end of the bottom clip.
00:46Now if I click and drag this we'll see a nice transition while we can still see the video
00:51in the background, and then once we get to this 20 frame mark we'll have the top clip
00:55at 100%.
00:56Now there's one more thing to take care of in this transition and that is that the bottom
01:00clip has some audio associated to it. So if I come over here and just hit play to preview this
01:05(video playing)
01:08we see that the audio is playing while the man is talking.
01:11So what we want to do is let's come back. Let's click on this little arrow here. Let's
01:16come up to the audio and let's choose fade out over 1.5 seconds, and then hit Return.
01:25Now when we play this the music will fade out 2 seconds before the end of that clip, which
01:28gives us enough time to fade down to a low enough volume that we can hear the man speaking.
01:33So let's magnify this out a little bit, move the play head back, and then let's preview it.
01:39(video playing)
01:42So we can hear the audio fading down before we see the transition, and then we can clearly
01:46hear the man speaking.
01:47And now that we've successfully removed that title frame,
01:51next we'll add some of our own custom graphics.
Collapse this transcript
Adding artwork and making Smart Objects
00:00Now to add artwork to our Photoshop file. First let's come down here to the timeline.
00:05Let's scrub this all the way back to the beginning.
00:07Let's bring the playhead back to the zero marker.
00:10Now I'm going to collapse my Timeline panel. Let's choose File > Open. Inside of the Exercise
00:17Files, let's open up design_elements.psd.
00:20Now inside of this file let's come over here, select the Move tool in the Tool panel. Let's
00:27grab the logo layer, and let's drag this into the Photoshop file that contains our video.
00:31Now inside up here the logo is a little bit too big, but before we scale it let's come
00:35over here to the Layers panel, right click and convert this to a smart object.
00:39Let's come back to our design_elements.psd file. Let's select the product label. Let's
00:45drag this in. Convert that to a smart object. Back to the design_elements. Let's grab the
00:52olive branch. Drag this in. Convert that to a smart object.
00:57Let's move that behind the logo and product smart objects.
01:02And now we need two additional layer of just color. So let's come down here in the Layers
01:06panel. Let's create a new layer above the second copy of the clip.
01:12Let's name this color 1. Let's select our Eyedropper tool. Let's come down here and
01:17select the first yellow color from the design_elements file.
01:20Once that's on the foreground, come up to Edit, choose Fill, Use Foreground Color, click OK.
01:29Let's create another layer. Call this color 2. Eyedropper. Select the darker green and
01:35instead of going to the Edit menu, you can simply hit opt or alt + delete to
01:38fill with the foreground color.
01:40So with our artwork in the file, let's come back and close the design_elements.psd and
01:45let's open up the timeline.
01:47Now in the timeline you'll see that every layer that we have represented in the Layers panel
01:51Also shows up in the Timeline panel as well.
01:53Now that we have our artwork in place, next we can scale and position these to create
01:56our own custom title slide.
Collapse this transcript
Positioning and transforming artwork
00:00Now to prepare our title slide, let's come up over to the Layers panel.
00:02I'm going to move color 1 above color 2. I also want to transform this a little bit,
00:08so let's come in here and wrap this in the smart object as well.
00:10So, what I'm going to do is hold cmd or ctrl + t to get the Transform tool. I'm
00:17going to zoom out here a little bit.
00:20So, let's scale this up a little bit; maybe just about 10%. Let's rotate this, and let's move
00:30this up a little bit, up to about the halfway point.
00:33Once I'm done I'm going to hit Return.
00:36Next, let's come over to the Layers panel, select the olive branch, hit cmd or
00:41ctrl + t for Transform. Let's scale this down. We're going to scale this down to about 45%,
00:48and you can see the Transform amount up in the toolbar at the top here.
00:53Once that's in place I'll hit return.
00:54Using my arrow keys, I'm going to move this around a little bit.
00:59Next let's grab the logo. Let's transform this as well.
01:04We're going to transform the logo to about 68%. Hit Return.
01:11Let's move this down.
01:15Lastly grab the product. Let's transform this and bring this down to about 83%, and let's move this down.
01:24So, now with your arrow keys, you can select the individual layers and just move these around.
01:34Maybe not angle the yellow so much.
01:37And the goal is to have the layout positioned exactly the way you want it at the 0 marker
01:40here on the timeline.
01:42So, now with everything sized and scaled and positioned properly, next we'll start animating
01:46these individual elements.
Collapse this transcript
Animating artwork
00:00Now the first element we're going to animate is going to be the product label.
00:03So, let's get our playhead. Let's drag this out to the 2 second mark. Let's select the
00:09product layer in the timeline.
00:11Let's scroll over in the Timeline panel.
00:13Now let's come out here to the end of this clip, when you get your cursor to the right
00:16side, you'll see this little Edit symbol.
00:19Let's click and drag this down. This will make the duration of the product artwork two seconds.
00:24Scroll back to the left. Now with this still selected, let's come over here to the Transitions,
00:30and let's grab Fade, and drag and drop it onto the right side of this object here.
00:35So, now if we grab the playhead we'll see that will actually transition out over the
00:39course of 1 second and at the 2 second mark the product label will be completely faded out.
00:45Next we're going to animate the color 2 layer.
00:47So, let's come over here in the Timeline panel. Let's toggle this open, so that we can see
00:51all of the properties that we can animate.
00:54Let's bring the playhead back to 1 second and about 15 frames.
00:59Let's activate Position and Opacity. By turning on these stopwatches we'll get an initial keyframe here.
01:06Let's drag the playhead out to the 3 second mark.
01:09Now with the 3 second mark with this layer selected, let's come up to the Move tool,
01:13and I'm going to use my arrow keys and hold the Shift key, and press the down arrow, and
01:18I'm going to move it down below the bottom of the canvas.
01:22As we begin to make any sort of movement change, you'll see that we automatically get a keyframe here.
01:26So, now if we drag the playhead back and forth, we can see the animation. At the 3 second
01:33mark, let's also change the Opacity.
01:35So, let's come up here to the layers panel. Let's set the Opacity down to 0.
01:40So, now when I jog the timeline we'll see that both Opacity and Position are being animated.
01:45Now with our first two elements animated, next we'll start animating smart objects,
01:48which gives us an additional property called Transform.
Collapse this transcript
Animating Smart Objects
00:00Next I want to animate the olive branch.
00:02So, in the Timeline panel, let's open up the properties for olive branch.
00:06Now since we're working with a smart object instead of Position we have Transform as a property.
00:11Let's bring the playhead back to the 1 second and 15 frame mark.
00:15Let's activate Transform. Let's bring the playhead back out to the 3 second mark
00:21and now to transform this object we can hit cmd or ctrl + T. This will give us our transform.
00:28First we're going to scale this up. Bring this up to about 65%. Let's also rotate this,
00:36let's rotate it about -60 degrees and then let's grab the entire object and let's move it off the stage.
00:47Once we have it positioned properly, let's hit Return, that will commit the transform
00:51and then that will automatically create a second transform keyframe in the timeline.
00:54Now, if we click and drag this, we'll get a sense that the olive branch is moving toward
00:59us, and is animating and rotating off the stage.
01:03Now that we've animated the first transformation of the smart object, next we'll animate the
01:07light yellow color block.
Collapse this transcript
Adjusting a Smart Object registration point
00:00Next we're going to animate the yellow block.
00:03Let's bring the playhead back to the 1 second and 15 frame mark.
00:07Let's close up the properties for olive branch; open up the properties for color 1.
00:11Let's come in here and before we do anything, let's hit cmd or ctrl + t to transform.
00:17Let's extend this out a little bit; again, this is a smart object.
00:20Once we have that in place, let's come over here, click on Transform. Move this out to
00:25the 3 second mark. Let's hit cmd or ctrl + t again to transform.
00:30Now the reason that we extended this is I want to rotate this around and I want to make sure
00:33that the corner doesn't show up on the canvas.
00:36The second thing we're going to do is take the registration point and move this from
00:39being in the center to the lower right-hand corner.
00:43Now with that moved, I will move my cursor out a little bit. Get my Rotation tool. I'm going
00:48to click and drag. Let's rotate this around until its vertical and then let's move it down
00:53here a little bit as well. Then hit Return. That will give us our second transform keyframe.
00:59Now, if we click and drag we will get this sort of rocking and rotation effect for the yellow block.
01:05Now, the other thing you'll notice is that even though both animations for the olive
01:08branch and the yellow block end at three seconds, the olive branch actually moves off the stage
01:12before the yellow block, and I want them both to move off at the same time.
01:16So, what I'm going to do is move the playhead to the point where we can see just the olive
01:20branch just leaving and on the yellow block, let's come down, grab the transform, and let's
01:26drag this keyframe to match this frame here.
01:29So, again even though the ending points are different, visually this is going to look
01:33like both of the items are going to animate off the stage at the same time.
01:37And now with all of these elements animated next we're going to animate the logo, but
01:40in addition to transform, we're also going to animate the layer effect.
Collapse this transcript
Animating layer styles and effects
00:00Now for the logo in addition to transforming and scaling this, I want to change its color
00:04and use it as an ID bug in the lower right-hand side of the video.
00:07So, in the timeline panel, let's bring our playhead back to the 1 second and 15 frame
00:13mark. Let's close up the properties for color 1. Let's open up the properties for logo.
00:18Let's come in here and activate Transform, Opacity, and Style.
00:23With those activated lets bring the playhead out to the 3 second mark and first we're going
00:27to change the color.
00:28So, we're going to come over here to the Layers panel. Select a logo layer. Come down to the effects.
00:35Let's apply a color overlay. Inside of here let's change the color to white. Click OK.
00:43And now notice that we get a keyframe here. You can animate any properties in the Effects panel.
00:49Next let's do transform.
00:51So let's hit cmd or ctrl + t. Let's transform this down to about 27% or 28%. Let's also drag
00:56this down or use your arrow keys and position this in the lower right-hand side of the video.
01:01Once it's in place you can hit Return. That will give us another keyframe for transform.
01:06So, now if we jog the playhead we can see that this changes from black to white and
01:12the scale also changes.
01:13Lastly, let's change the Opacity.
01:15Let's come over to the Layers panel.
01:18Let's bring this down to about 40%.
01:21Now with our logo in the lower right-hand side, we do want this ID to be up for the rest of the video.
01:25So, let's come down to the Timeline panel.
01:29Let's zoom out so we can see the entire duration of the video.
01:34Let's grab the logo clip and let's just drag this all the way out. This way the logo will be
01:41visible for the rest of the video.
01:42So, now that we have all of the elements animated, next we will add a lower one third so we can
01:47add a title to the man who is being interviewed in the video.
Collapse this transcript
2. Adding a Lower Third
Extending and reusing a graphic element
00:00Next we're going to reuse a piece of artwork that we used in our title graphic so that
00:03we can create lower-third.
00:04So in the Timeline panel let's close up the properties for logo for color 1. I am going
00:11to zoom out here a little bit, and then let's come down here to color 2. First we need to extend this clip.
00:21Let's extend this out as far as the 18 second mark.
00:25Let's pan back. Let's get the timeline. Bring the play head to about the 10 second
00:31mark. Let's zoom back up in here.
00:36Now with the 10 second mark, let's open up the properties for color. Now we already have Position and
00:41Opacity activated. So what we're going to do here is add another keyframe. So clicking
00:45on this diamond shape inside of here will add two additional keyframes.
00:49So what this does is hold the keyframe values fromm the 3 second mark, so the Opacity and the Position.
00:54So now let's bring the playhead out to the 11 second mark. At 11 seconds let's bring
01:01up the Opacity. So let's go to Opacity. Let's bring this up to about 85%, and then for Position,
01:10let's select the Move tool. I can use my arrow keys and just move this up to about 325 pixels,
01:16and I'm going to visually measure this so that the logo is centered.
01:20Now if I jog the timeline, we can see that we have our background for the lower-third.
01:27Let's scrub the timeline out.
01:28Let's get the timeline playhead somewhere around 15 seconds and about 15 frames.
01:34Let's come down here. Let's activate Position and Opacity one more time. Scrub this out
01:40a little bit more. If I jog the playhead out here we can see this is where the scene
01:43changes. So this is where I want to have the lower-third completely gone.
01:47Let's come back and activate 2 more keyframes. Position, at the Move tool. Let's move this
01:55back down, and then for Opacity let's come back and set this to 0.
02:00So, now we have our lower-third graphic which comes up when the man comes on the screen,
02:05and then goes away as we're cutting to the farm.
02:08And now with that in place we'll add a text layer so we can add a title to the man speaking.
Collapse this transcript
Adding text to a video
00:00Next we're going to create a text layer so that we can add a title to the man who's being interviewed.
00:04So, let's scroll back in the timeline. Let's get the play head at the 10 second mark.
00:09Once that's in place, select a Text Tool, come up to the Canvas, and Click to Add a text layer.
00:15Let's type Full Name on one line then a Return, then ORGANIZATION TITLE.
00:20Let's select all the text. Let's set this to 44 points, then let's select a name.
00:26Let's make this a little bit larger. Let's make it bold. Let's set the color to white,
00:32then increase the leading a little bit.
00:33Let's select all the text. Hold down the Option or Alt key and press the down arrow.
00:38Get the Move tool. Let's move this down into place.
00:41If the text is a little large we can come in here and change the text. Bring this down to 42.
00:50Once we have this positioned where we want, let's drag the playhead over until we can
00:54see the full height of the lower-third.
00:56Let's move our text into place. Let's come back to the ORGANIZATION TITLE. Let's click
01:04on the color. Let's make this a darker green. That looks good.
01:12I'm going to make this a little bit smaller. Bring it down to 40 points.
01:18Now when I have this where I want it, let's bring the playhead back. Let's get the
01:22playhead between the keyframes for the color 2 layer.
01:26Let's drag the text layer to make sure, it starts at that point. Let's come up to transition.
01:32Let's add in the fade. Let's grab this fade. Let's drag the duration of the fade back to about 20 frames.
01:40Let's move the timeline across. Let's grab the text layer. Let's drag this out so that
01:45it's halfway between the keyframes when the lower-third goes away.
01:49Go to transition. Let's add another fade. Let's drag this one to be 20 frames as well.
01:57Now that we have all of our animations and titling in place, next we'll look at what
02:01our rendering options are from within Photoshop.

3. Rendering and Publishing
Rendering video from Photoshop
00:00Now with our video editing complete. From within Photoshop we have two ways to access the Render Video panel.
00:05The first option is this button here in the lower left hand corner of the Timeline panel.
00:09Or we can go up to the File menu, choose Export, and then Render Video.
00:15From this dialog box at the top, under Location, we'll just choose the Desktop.
00:20Next we'll choose whether we want to use the Adobe Media Encoder or a Photoshop Image Sequence.
00:25You might choose an Image Sequence if you want to have a series of frames that you want
00:28to bring into another animation program, but we're going to use the Adobe Media Encoder.
00:33Under Format we're going to choose H.264. This is the most common video format on the
00:37web, and this is also used in digital magazines, interactive PDFs, ePubs, iBooks, and even viewing on mobile devices.
00:44DPX, this is the Digital Picture Exchange. This is most commonly used by digital effects
00:49artists, and then QuickTime, which is very popular in other authoring environments.
00:54So we're going to choose H.264 and then click Render, and once our video is ready let's
00:58come out to the desktop. Let's double-click this and let's preview this in our video player.
01:04 (video playing)
01:28And after previewing the video, if all of your edits and animations look good then you're
01:31ready to use this MPEG-4 in other interactive and web related projects.

What to do with new video
00:00So now that you know how to create and edit MPEG-4 files with Photoshop CS6, I have more
00:04courses on the lynda.com Online Training Library which will show you things that you can do
00:08with those MPEG-4s.
00:10One is a step-by-step course showing you how to create an HTML5 Video Gallery from
00:13scratch, and this experience will work on computers, tablets, and mobile devices.
00:18And another course which will show you how to safely crack open an ePub file, add a video into
00:22the HTML, and then repackage the ePub file, and this will work on a series of modern digital
00:27book readers including iPads, NOOK COLOR, NOOK TABLET and Kindle Fires.
00:33And with that, that concludes Adding Graphics and Animation to a Video, and I really appreciate
00:36you watching my course.
