1. Adding and Animating ArtworkGetting video into Photoshop| 00:00 | Now I'm going to show you one of two ways that
you can get a video into your Photoshop file.
| | 00:04 | First, let's come up to the File menu, let's
choose New, let's create a new Canvas at 640 x 402
| | 00:10 | pixels, this matches the pixel dimension of the
MPEG-4 we're going to bring in, so then click OK.
| | 00:16 | Now inside of here let's come up to the
Window menu, let's come down to Timeline.
| | 00:21 | Now as I mentioned in the introduction video,
we're only going to be supporting CS6 and
| | 00:26 | later, CS6 is the first
version that has this Timeline panel.
| | 00:30 | Now if you'd like to see some techniques for
creating animated artwork inside of Photoshop
| | 00:34 | CS3 Extended, through CS5.5 Extended, I have
a video in my Edge Essentials training that
| | 00:39 | covers creating keyframes and animations
inside of those versions of Photoshop.
| | 00:44 | So back here inside of Photoshop CS6, I'm
going to come up here to the Canvas. I'm going
| | 00:51 | to zoom out here a little bit.
| | 00:52 | Now I have my Timeline down here at the
bottom taking up a lot of space, as we start adding
| | 00:56 | artwork and animating individual elements
this Timeline is going to get pretty full.
| | 00:59 | So I'm going to work with my
canvas much smaller up here.
| | 01:02 | Now the first thing we're going to do, is come
down here and click on the Create Video Timeline.
| | 01:07 | Once I do that all of the video controls
will come up and to add a video into our project
| | 01:10 | we can come over here and
click on the plus (+) sign.
| | 01:13 | Let's come up to the Exercise Files,
let's choose the video.mpg4, then click Open.
| | 01:19 | This is going to do 2 things, one it's
going to bring the video into the Timeline where we
| | 01:23 | can click our playhead and scrub the video,
and we can also see that we have a Video Group
| | 01:27 | over here in the Layers panel.
| | 01:29 | Now Video Group is to align a series of
clips and do more traditional video editing.
| | 01:34 | However, for this course we're going to be
using one video and adding our own graphics to it.
| | 01:38 | So the second approach that we can take is
to close this document --don't save-- and simply
| | 01:44 | come under the Photoshop menu and choose File >
Open, select our MPEG-4 video, and simply click Open.
| | 01:51 | Doing this will have Photoshop
automatically import the video and activate the Timeline.
| | 01:56 | Now with this in place, I mentioned before
we don't want to use a Video Group, so I'm
| | 01:59 | going to grab this layer, drag it out of
the Video Group and then select a Video Group,
| | 02:05 | and delete it. So at this point we have
simply just one video along our Timeline.
| | 02:11 | Finally let's come up to the
File menu, let's choose Save.
| | 02:15 | Now in the desktop, let's call
this myVideo.psd, and then hit Save.
| | 02:21 | Now it is worth noting that Photoshop is not
embedding that entire video inside of the Photoshop
| | 02:25 | file, it is making a reference inside of
this Photoshop file to the source video that's
| | 02:29 | on the hard drive.
| | 02:30 | And now that we have a video inside of Photoshop,
next we'll start making some edits by cutting
| | 02:33 | this clip up.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Splitting video clips| 00:00 | So now we're going to making some edits to
this video. In the lower portion of the timeline
| | 00:04 | panel, we have a scale down here. As we move
this scale up and down this will change how
| | 00:09 | much of the timeline you can see and what
increments these little labels will show up in.
| | 00:13 | So here we can see we have 2, 4, 6, these are
frames, if we move this down, we'll see things
| | 00:21 | here in terms of seconds.
| | 00:24 | Now Photoshop is making this
determination based on the source video.
| | 00:26 | If we come over here to the flyout menu and come
down to Set Timeline Frame Rate, you can change
| | 00:31 | the frame rate here.
| | 00:32 | So right now we're looking at 24 frames per
second. Let's click OK. So if I go between
| | 00:38 | 2 seconds and 3 seconds here, there's 24
frames, and we can see in the lower left hand part
| | 00:43 | of the Timeline panel we're
currently sitting on 2 seconds and 1 frame.
| | 00:47 | And as I move these back and forth you can see
individual frames inside of the Photoshop Timeline panel.
| | 00:52 | So what we're going to do here is make an edit.
| | 00:55 | So let's move this up a little bit. Let's
scrub the timeline out. I want to find about
| | 01:00 | 10 seconds. Let's come up into the Timeline
panel. Let's click to activate the playhead.
| | 01:05 | Let's scrub this back and forth.
| | 01:06 | Now the first edit I want to make is I
want to get rid of this dissolve that we have
| | 01:11 | to a logo or a title page before we
go out to the man being interviewed.
| | 01:17 | So let's come back out to about 10 seconds
and 20 frames. Again we can see that in our
| | 01:25 | lower left hand corner here. I want to split
this clip here. So with the playhead here,
| | 01:29 | let's come over here to the scissors. Now when
I click on the scissors what this is going
| | 01:33 | to do is split this, and since we're not
working inside of a video layer group we're
| | 01:38 | going to get these on two different layers.
| | 01:40 | So notice the Layers panel now
shows me two individual clips.
| | 01:44 | So let's continue to scrub this. Let's
scrub out until the end of that title frame right
| | 01:49 | when dips to black. That happens at 14 seconds
and 4 frames. Let's come up and spilt this again.
| | 01:56 | Now I don't want this middle clip, so I'll
select it, hit Delete, notice that it deletes
| | 02:01 | on the timeline and in the Layers panel.
| | 02:04 | Let's come up here, let's grab this
clip and let's just drag it back.
| | 02:10 | So I'll leave it right at the end of the first
clip, so now if we scrub the timeline we'll
| | 02:12 | see that we go from this clip, it jumps
immediately to the beginning black, and then the man being
| | 02:18 | interviewed fades in.
| | 02:20 | So now that we've split that video clip,
next we'll create a transition between the two.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Moving and transitioning video| 00:00 | Now to create a dissolve between these two
clips, let's grab the playhead. Let's bring
| | 00:04 | it up between the two.
| | 00:04 | I'm going to come down here and scale this up a
little bit, so I can start to see some of the frames.
| | 00:09 | I want to overlap this approximately 10
frames so this ends at the 20 frame mark, and the
| | 00:16 | 10 frame mark is somewhere around here. So
let's grab this clip. Let's drag it back so
| | 00:21 | that they overlap each other.
| | 00:24 | Now with this clip selected on the top let's
come over here to the Transitions. Let's grab
| | 00:29 | the transition and just drag
and drop it right on top of the clip.
| | 00:32 | Now we'll see this ramp here showing us the
duration of this clip. Let's come out here
| | 00:35 | to the end. We'll get this little
edit symbol here. Let's click and drag.
| | 00:41 | Let's drag this back so that the transition of the
fade in happens before the end of the bottom clip.
| | 00:46 | Now if I click and drag this we'll see a
nice transition while we can still see the video
| | 00:51 | in the background, and then once we get to
this 20 frame mark we'll have the top clip
| | 00:55 | at 100%.
| | 00:56 | Now there's one more thing to take care of
in this transition and that is that the bottom
| | 01:00 | clip has some audio associated to it. So if I
come over here and just hit play to preview this
| | 01:05 | (video playing)
| | 01:08 | we see that the audio is
playing while the man is talking.
| | 01:11 | So what we want to do is let's come back.
Let's click on this little arrow here. Let's
| | 01:16 | come up to the audio and let's choose fade
out over 1.5 seconds, and then hit Return.
| | 01:25 | Now when we play this the music will fade out
2 seconds before the end of that clip, which
| | 01:28 | gives us enough time to fade down to a low
enough volume that we can hear the man speaking.
| | 01:33 | So let's magnify this out a little bit, move
the play head back, and then let's preview it.
| | 01:39 | (video playing)
| | 01:42 | So we can hear the audio fading down before
we see the transition, and then we can clearly
| | 01:46 | hear the man speaking.
| | 01:47 | And now that we've
successfully removed that title frame,
| | 01:51 | next we'll add some of our own custom graphics.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adding artwork and making Smart Objects| 00:00 | Now to add artwork to our Photoshop file.
First let's come down here to the timeline.
| | 00:05 | Let's scrub this all the
way back to the beginning.
| | 00:07 | Let's bring the playhead back to the zero marker.
| | 00:10 | Now I'm going to collapse my Timeline panel.
Let's choose File > Open. Inside of the Exercise
| | 00:17 | Files, let's open up design_elements.psd.
| | 00:20 | Now inside of this file let's come over here,
select the Move tool in the Tool panel. Let's
| | 00:27 | grab the logo layer, and let's drag this
into the Photoshop file that contains our video.
| | 00:31 | Now inside up here the logo is a little bit
too big, but before we scale it let's come
| | 00:35 | over here to the Layers panel, right
click and convert this to a smart object.
| | 00:39 | Let's come back to our design_elements.psd
file. Let's select the product label. Let's
| | 00:45 | drag this in. Convert that to a smart object.
Back to the design_elements. Let's grab the
| | 00:52 | olive branch. Drag this in.
Convert that to a smart object.
| | 00:57 | Let's move that behind the
logo and product smart objects.
| | 01:02 | And now we need two additional layer of just
color. So let's come down here in the Layers
| | 01:06 | panel. Let's create a new layer
above the second copy of the clip.
| | 01:12 | Let's name this color 1. Let's select our
Eyedropper tool. Let's come down here and
| | 01:17 | select the first yellow color
from the design_elements file.
| | 01:20 | Once that's on the foreground, come up to Edit,
choose Fill, Use Foreground Color, click OK.
| | 01:29 | Let's create another layer. Call this color
2. Eyedropper. Select the darker green and
| | 01:35 | instead of going to the Edit menu, you can
simply hit opt or alt + delete to
| | 01:38 | fill with the foreground color.
| | 01:40 | So with our artwork in the file, let's come
back and close the design_elements.psd and
| | 01:45 | let's open up the timeline.
| | 01:47 | Now in the timeline you'll see that every
layer that we have represented in the Layers panel
| | 01:51 | Also shows up in the Timeline panel as well.
| | 01:53 | Now that we have our artwork in place,
next we can scale and position these to create
| | 01:56 | our own custom title slide.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Positioning and transforming artwork| 00:00 | Now to prepare our title slide,
let's come up over to the Layers panel.
| | 00:02 | I'm going to move color 1 above color 2.
I also want to transform this a little bit,
| | 00:08 | so let's come in here and wrap
this in the smart object as well.
| | 00:10 | So, what I'm going to do is hold cmd
or ctrl + t to get the Transform tool. I'm
| | 00:17 | going to zoom out here a little bit.
| | 00:20 | So, let's scale this up a little bit; maybe
just about 10%. Let's rotate this, and let's move
| | 00:30 | this up a little bit, up to
about the halfway point.
| | 00:33 | Once I'm done I'm going to hit Return.
| | 00:36 | Next, let's come over to the Layers panel,
select the olive branch, hit cmd or
| | 00:41 | ctrl + t for Transform. Let's scale this down.
We're going to scale this down to about 45%,
| | 00:48 | and you can see the Transform
amount up in the toolbar at the top here.
| | 00:53 | Once that's in place I'll hit return.
| | 00:54 | Using my arrow keys, I'm going
to move this around a little bit.
| | 00:59 | Next let's grab the logo.
Let's transform this as well.
| | 01:04 | We're going to transform the
logo to about 68%. Hit Return.
| | 01:11 | Let's move this down.
| | 01:15 | Lastly grab the product. Let's transform this and
bring this down to about 83%, and let's move this down.
| | 01:24 | So, now with your arrow keys, you can select
the individual layers and just move these around.
| | 01:34 | Maybe not angle the yellow so much.
| | 01:37 | And the goal is to have the layout positioned
exactly the way you want it at the 0 marker
| | 01:40 | here on the timeline.
| | 01:42 | So, now with everything sized and scaled and
positioned properly, next we'll start animating
| | 01:46 | these individual elements.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Animating artwork| 00:00 | Now the first element we're going to
animate is going to be the product label.
| | 00:03 | So, let's get our playhead. Let's drag this
out to the 2 second mark. Let's select the
| | 00:09 | product layer in the timeline.
| | 00:11 | Let's scroll over in the Timeline panel.
| | 00:13 | Now let's come out here to the end of this
clip, when you get your cursor to the right
| | 00:16 | side, you'll see this little Edit symbol.
| | 00:19 | Let's click and drag this down. This will make
the duration of the product artwork two seconds.
| | 00:24 | Scroll back to the left. Now with this still
selected, let's come over here to the Transitions,
| | 00:30 | and let's grab Fade, and drag and drop it
onto the right side of this object here.
| | 00:35 | So, now if we grab the playhead we'll see
that will actually transition out over the
| | 00:39 | course of 1 second and at the 2 second mark
the product label will be completely faded out.
| | 00:45 | Next we're going to animate the color 2 layer.
| | 00:47 | So, let's come over here in the Timeline panel.
Let's toggle this open, so that we can see
| | 00:51 | all of the properties that we can animate.
| | 00:54 | Let's bring the playhead back
to 1 second and about 15 frames.
| | 00:59 | Let's activate Position and Opacity. By turning on
these stopwatches we'll get an initial keyframe here.
| | 01:06 | Let's drag the playhead out to the 3 second mark.
| | 01:09 | Now with the 3 second mark with this layer
selected, let's come up to the Move tool,
| | 01:13 | and I'm going to use my arrow keys and hold
the Shift key, and press the down arrow, and
| | 01:18 | I'm going to move it down
below the bottom of the canvas.
| | 01:22 | As we begin to make any sort of movement change,
you'll see that we automatically get a keyframe here.
| | 01:26 | So, now if we drag the playhead back and forth,
we can see the animation. At the 3 second
| | 01:33 | mark, let's also change the Opacity.
| | 01:35 | So, let's come up here to the layers
panel. Let's set the Opacity down to 0.
| | 01:40 | So, now when I jog the timeline we'll see
that both Opacity and Position are being animated.
| | 01:45 | Now with our first two elements animated,
next we'll start animating smart objects,
| | 01:48 | which gives us an
additional property called Transform.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Animating Smart Objects| 00:00 | Next I want to animate the olive branch.
| | 00:02 | So, in the Timeline panel, let's
open up the properties for olive branch.
| | 00:06 | Now since we're working with a smart object
instead of Position we have Transform as a property.
| | 00:11 | Let's bring the playhead back to
the 1 second and 15 frame mark.
| | 00:15 | Let's activate Transform. Let's bring the
playhead back out to the 3 second mark
| | 00:21 | and now to transform this object we can hit
cmd or ctrl + T. This will give us our transform.
| | 00:28 | First we're going to scale this up. Bring
this up to about 65%. Let's also rotate this,
| | 00:36 | let's rotate it about -60 degrees and then let's grab
the entire object and let's move it off the stage.
| | 00:47 | Once we have it positioned properly, let's
hit Return, that will commit the transform
| | 00:51 | and then that will automatically create a
second transform keyframe in the timeline.
| | 00:54 | Now, if we click and drag this, we'll get
a sense that the olive branch is moving toward
| | 00:59 | us, and is animating and rotating off the stage.
| | 01:03 | Now that we've animated the first
transformation of the smart object, next we'll animate the
| | 01:07 | light yellow color block.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Adjusting a Smart Object registration point| 00:00 | Next we're going to animate the yellow block.
| | 00:03 | Let's bring the playhead back to
the 1 second and 15 frame mark.
| | 00:07 | Let's close up the properties for olive
branch; open up the properties for color 1.
| | 00:11 | Let's come in here and before we do anything,
let's hit cmd or ctrl + t to transform.
| | 00:17 | Let's extend this out a little
bit; again, this is a smart object.
| | 00:20 | Once we have that in place, let's come
over here, click on Transform. Move this out to
| | 00:25 | the 3 second mark. Let's hit cmd
or ctrl + t again to transform.
| | 00:30 | Now the reason that we extended this is I want
to rotate this around and I want to make sure
| | 00:33 | that the corner doesn't show up on the canvas.
| | 00:36 | The second thing we're going to do is take
the registration point and move this from
| | 00:39 | being in the center to
the lower right-hand corner.
| | 00:43 | Now with that moved, I will move my cursor
out a little bit. Get my Rotation tool. I'm going
| | 00:48 | to click and drag. Let's rotate this around
until its vertical and then let's move it down
| | 00:53 | here a little bit as well. Then hit Return.
That will give us our second transform keyframe.
| | 00:59 | Now, if we click and drag we will get this sort of
rocking and rotation effect for the yellow block.
| | 01:05 | Now, the other thing you'll notice is
that even though both animations for the olive
| | 01:08 | branch and the yellow block end at three seconds,
the olive branch actually moves off the stage
| | 01:12 | before the yellow block, and I want
them both to move off at the same time.
| | 01:16 | So, what I'm going to do is move the
playhead to the point where we can see just the olive
| | 01:20 | branch just leaving and on the yellow block,
let's come down, grab the transform, and let's
| | 01:26 | drag this keyframe to match this frame here.
| | 01:29 | So, again even though the ending points
are different, visually this is going to look
| | 01:33 | like both of the items are going to
animate off the stage at the same time.
| | 01:37 | And now with all of these elements
animated next we're going to animate the logo, but
| | 01:40 | in addition to transform, we're
also going to animate the layer effect.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| Animating layer styles and effects| 00:00 | Now for the logo in addition to transforming
and scaling this, I want to change its color
| | 00:04 | and use it as an ID bug in the
lower right-hand side of the video.
| | 00:07 | So, in the timeline panel, let's bring our
playhead back to the 1 second and 15 frame
| | 00:13 | mark. Let's close up the properties for
color 1. Let's open up the properties for logo.
| | 00:18 | Let's come in here and activate
Transform, Opacity, and Style.
| | 00:23 | With those activated lets bring the playhead
out to the 3 second mark and first we're going
| | 00:27 | to change the color.
| | 00:28 | So, we're going to come over here to the Layers
panel. Select a logo layer. Come down to the effects.
| | 00:35 | Let's apply a color overlay. Inside of here
let's change the color to white. Click OK.
| | 00:43 | And now notice that we get a keyframe here. You
can animate any properties in the Effects panel.
| | 00:49 | Next let's do transform.
| | 00:51 | So let's hit cmd or ctrl + t. Let's
transform this down to about 27% or 28%. Let's also drag
| | 00:56 | this down or use your arrow keys and position
this in the lower right-hand side of the video.
| | 01:01 | Once it's in place you can hit Return. That
will give us another keyframe for transform.
| | 01:06 | So, now if we jog the playhead we can see
that this changes from black to white and
| | 01:12 | the scale also changes.
| | 01:13 | Lastly, let's change the Opacity.
| | 01:15 | Let's come over to the Layers panel.
| | 01:18 | Let's bring this down to about 40%.
| | 01:21 | Now with our logo in the lower right-hand side, we
do want this ID to be up for the rest of the video.
| | 01:25 | So, let's come down to the Timeline panel.
| | 01:29 | Let's zoom out so we can see
the entire duration of the video.
| | 01:34 | Let's grab the logo clip and let's just
drag this all the way out. This way the logo will be
| | 01:41 | visible for the rest of the video.
| | 01:42 | So, now that we have all of the elements animated,
next we will add a lower one third so we can
| | 01:47 | add a title to the man who is
being interviewed in the video.
| | Collapse this transcript |
|
|
3. Rendering and PublishingRendering video from Photoshop| 00:00 | Now with our video editing complete. From within
Photoshop we have two ways to access the Render Video panel.
| | 00:05 | The first option is this button here in the
lower left hand corner of the Timeline panel.
| | 00:09 | Or we can go up to the File menu,
choose Export, and then Render Video.
| | 00:15 | From this dialog box at the top, under
Location, we'll just choose the Desktop.
| | 00:20 | Next we'll choose whether we want to use the
Adobe Media Encoder or a Photoshop Image Sequence.
| | 00:25 | You might choose an Image Sequence if you
want to have a series of frames that you want
| | 00:28 | to bring into another animation program,
but we're going to use the Adobe Media Encoder.
| | 00:33 | Under Format we're going to choose H.264.
This is the most common video format on the
| | 00:37 | web, and this is also used in digital magazines,
interactive PDFs, ePubs, iBooks, and even viewing on mobile devices.
| | 00:44 | DPX, this is the Digital Picture Exchange.
This is most commonly used by digital effects
| | 00:49 | artists, and then QuickTime, which is very
popular in other authoring environments.
| | 00:54 | So we're going to choose H.264 and then
click Render, and once our video is ready let's
| | 00:58 | come out to the desktop. Let's double-click this and
let's preview this in our video player.
| | 01:04 |
(video playing)
| | 01:28 | And after previewing the video, if all of
your edits and animations look good then you're
| | 01:31 | ready to use this MPEG-4 in other
interactive and web related projects.
| | Collapse this transcript |
| What to do with new video| 00:00 | So now that you know how to create and edit
MPEG-4 files with Photoshop CS6, I have more
| | 00:04 | courses on the lynda.com Online Training
Library which will show you things that you can do
| | 00:08 | with those MPEG-4s.
| | 00:10 | One is a step-by-step course showing you
how to create an HTML5 Video Gallery from
| | 00:13 | scratch, and this experience will work
on computers, tablets, and mobile devices.
| | 00:18 | And another course which will show you how to
