The elusive alpha channel remains one of the most misunderstood yet powerful tools in Photoshop. Alpha channels are collections of luminance data that control the transparency of an image, and they inform just about every aspect of Photoshop. As he builds transitional blended layers, fashions a depth map, makes edge adjustments, and takes on extreme channel mixing, Omni Award-winning expert Deke McClelland teaches Photoshop users that where there's a will, there's a way. Photoshop CS3 Channels and Masks: Advanced Techniques covers mapping texture on an image, turning flesh into stone, using vector masks, working with all different channels, creating a rustic edge effect, and much more. Exercise files accompany the tutorials.

Hello and welcome to the continuation of my epic love poem channels and masks in Photoshop CS3, which I call Photoshop CS3 Channels and Masks. In this second part of the series, we'll be discussing Advanced Techniques. By which I mean advanced ways to employ Layers, Blending Options, Masks, Channels, and Paths to correct images; enhance digital photographs and create wicked cool effects. We'll also see how to separate complex foregrounds from complex backgrounds, work with high bit-depths. And add a modicum of 3D with displacement maps and lighting effects.
Just one little FYI before I send you on your way. When I say advanced techniques, I mean advanced techniques. Chapter wise with the mid-way point. We've seen nine chapters; we have nine to go. Time wise not so much mid-way. We've seen roughly 130 movies. Well, I rounded that up you know to give you an elevated sense of accomplishment. It's really just a 129 movies. I mean not to burst your bubbler anything but a 129 movies, come on. Meanwhile, we have 12,110 movies left to go. Okay, that's actually the number of lines in Homer's epic poem 'The Odyssey' which was his sequel to the 'The Iliad' which was only 129 lines long. See, just like channels and masks.
Plainly Homer rip me off. The time travel to the future, stole my idea went back to the past and rip me off. Here is my point; the next nine chapters are longer, more complex, and more involved. This next chapters is a great example. We are going to see some amazing Advanced Blending Techniques including Luminance Blending, Field Opacity, Color Matching, and ways to blend a masked image with a new background to create a credible effect. 'The Odyssey', just so you know, doesn't include a single blending technique.
Sure, its' got a cyclops. You saw my big eye earlier, that's where you got that. I mean Homer, give me a break. He is not so great. How many series has he done for Lynda.com, just a one WordPerfect for Early Greeks, and it's really out of date. So do yourself a favor. Stop reading silly old Greek stuff. That's a very clever pun by the way, and enjoy this next video.
