Tony Cruz's iPhone Surf Photography: Start to Finish

with Tony Cruz

Paddle into the Pacific with surfer and iPhone photographer Tony Cruz, whose portraits of the California coast, both gritty and sublime, have attracted a following on Instagram. Tony uses a LifeProof case, a leash, a discriminating eye, and a lot of ingenuity to capture real moments unnoticed. Once on land, he edits them under a self-imposed time limit to maximize their impact. Join him as he describes his editing process, using tools like Snapseed, Blender, and Mextures; explains how the Instagram community has motivated his work; and shares how he makes creative use of his mistakes.

00:01 (MUSIC). Where it originally started was being in
00:05 the water and seeing this perspective not everybody sees and having my phone
00:09 available to capture that. It's an exciting feeling.
00:13 (MUSIC) Once I've selected the image that I like what I tend to do is bring it in
00:20 the Snap Scene, with that I will experiment with other apps.
00:29 So as I'm masking through and looking for a specific look I am making decisions on
00:34 the fly. And I try to stay consistent with the look
00:38 that I have. It is a process, and I think that means
00:46 more, because I'm going to put effort into it.

Tony Cruz's iPhone Surf Photography
00:00 (MUSIC). Where it originally started was being in
00:20 the water and seeing that this is a moment, this is a perspective not
00:23 everybody sees, and you know, just that excitement of being one.
00:27 I'm going to be out there surfing and having my phone available to capture that.
00:32 It's an exciting feeling, you know, of the unknown of like wow, this could be really good.
00:37 (MUSIC). Your typical surf photography, water
00:53 photography you know, a lot of it's like the moment of somebody in like a big
00:56 barrel or, whatever it might be, it is a big moment that they're capturing.
01:01 And I remember one day I was just out there thinking, man that would be a great picture.
01:05 At the time there wasn't anything until Life Proof Case, a waterproof case, you
01:09 know, for your iPhone. And, right now I have a leash, and now I
01:13 have it wrapped around my wrist, and so I tuck my phone into my sleeve and then I
01:16 pull it out, take a photo, tuck it back in, catch a couple of waves you know and
01:20 just kind of incorporate that in what I'm already doing.
01:28 You know I kind of want to be like the fly on the wall in water if that makes sense.
01:31 I want to be out there and it would be neat to get out of the water and someone
01:34 go, whoa, you were taking photos? It's like, that's kind of what I want to do.
01:38 I don't want to totally be noticeable, and I want to capture real moments.
01:41 (MUSIC). In particular, there was a pelican that
01:53 flew by and landed, and just even him taking off from the water and the wings
01:56 opening up, it's like, wow, that, that was a moment where I captured that moment and
02:00 I could show that so it's pretty neat. (MUSIC).
02:08 I would say I saw it being more than just being camera honestly when Instagram came
02:12 out, because I would take photo's all the time, but I had no where to send them no
02:15 where to post and I saw that as a medium where I could post these photos that I am
02:19 always taking, rather then being stuck on a camera roll.
02:28 So after being in the water and taking photos, I just kind of look for things
02:31 that kind of catch my eye, you know, and that's, can be anything.
02:36 Once I've selected the image that I like, what I tend to do is bring it into Snapseed.
02:42 I like Snapseed because I like that I can do the basic global overview of my photo.
02:49 I'll then go into selective adjust which, it's the big features that I like about
02:53 Snapseed because, for example I took a photo of a surfer and in the background
02:56 the landscape totally lost it's detail, and I wanted to bring those back into the photo.
03:03 So I was able to select the mountain, bump up the brightness on that.
03:07 And I can do all that within the selective adjust, rather it being destructive of the
03:11 whole photo, it was just that one area. Once I've saved out whatever I'm, I've
03:16 been processing through Snapseed, I'll then bring it over Blender, which allowed
03:21 me to do different layers and masking. And then what I also like to do is
03:26 something that I found out on Instagram. there's a user, his name is Merrick Davis.
03:32 And, what his thing is is he's created these things what he calls Mextures.
03:36 And essentially they are are overlays that you can add to your photos.
03:39 So, I have two photos that are lined up. One being the one that I saved out from
03:44 Snapseed and then adding a Mexture overlay.
03:48 I can then adjust this however I would like.
03:51 Once I'm in blend modes, this is where it brings the texture, it brings out some of
03:54 the textures, it brings out the colors in the overlay that I use.
03:57 But this is where I can, in a sense, experiment with the looks I'm going for.
04:03 (MUSIC). So as I'm masking through and looking for
04:08 a specific look I am making decisions on the fly.
04:11 And I know one thing about myself I, I can be on my phone for hours, and I try not to.
04:16 So one thing I really like to do is I like to keep it under 5 minutes.
04:19 The decisions that I'm making are strictly based off just kind of, one, I try to stay
04:23 consistent with the look that I have. With that, I will experiment with other apps.
04:30 For example I use Shape Cut. It's just a basic app.
04:33 Go in, cuts out a shape of whatever it might be that I might have.
04:37 And so, once I cut that out, I'll then be back in Blender.
04:41 And I'll then finalize the photo to where I think, okay this is complete now.
04:46 (MUSIC). So sometimes, I'll run into photos that I
04:57 accidentally put my finger in front of the lens or whatever.
05:01 And I did that today, and I took a photo and my finger was actually in front of the
05:05 camera, and it had this reddish, yellow, orangish tone to it that I then brought in
05:10 to Blender and I was able to use that. There was a palm tree in the foreground
05:18 that really stood out, but the background was totally blown out and I was able to
05:21 give it like this rich color that the photo didn't originally have, but I was
05:24 able to bring that in. I try to use the photos that I don't think
05:30 are usable and make something out of nothing.
05:33 (MUSIC). It is a personal thing to me because I am
05:45 sharing my life. I'm sharing my passions.
05:48 I'm sharing not just a photo that I threw a random filter on there.
05:52 It is a process and I think that means more because I'm going to put effort into
05:56 it and that's going to go out. It's encouraging to put that stuff out
06:02 there, it's encouraging to get responses from people and it's encouraging to be
06:07 able to show sides of myself that, it's a part of me.
06:12 Having that passion of surfing and having an opportunity to capture that, I think
06:16 it's pretty amazing that we have that opportunity to do that.
06:20 (MUSIC)
