The four factors that influence DOF

All right. So how is it that we can create a shallow depth of field which is so important for portraiture? Well unfortunately, there isn't a magic button which you can press on your camera which will generate this effect. Rather there are four factors, which influence our ability to create a shallow depth of field. The first factor has to do with our sensor size, here you can see I have a sensor which I removed from an old camera. The larger the sensor size the greater your ability to capture an image with a shallow depth of field. For example if we think about a smartphone for a moment, you can imagine that the sensor inside of here is really, really teeny and because of that we aren't able to capture images on our smartphones which have a shallow depth of field. But if we move up say to a full frame camera well that will give us that ability. So the first factor is sensor size. Next it comes to our lenses and our focal lengths.
