So if aperture controls the amount of light that's allowed in your camera, you can think about shutter speed as controlling the amount of time that that light is allowed into your camera. I know that kind of sounds confusing, but you can think about it like this, have you ever baked a batch of cookies? It's very similar to baking a photograph in your camera. You need to set your oven to a specific temperature in order to get things ready. And when you're taking a good exposure, you need to set your aperture to a certain temperature or F-stop to allow a specific amount of light in. Now, in order to get that perfect batch of cookies, you're going to have to take those cookies out of the oven at the specific amount of time that the recipe calls for. It's the same thing with photography. Shutter speed is like setting the time on your oven.
