Setting menus on a Nikon camera and flash

Video: Setting menus on a Nikon camera and flash

Well, let's take a look at the Nikon camera and flash. Now I haven't been shooting as much with these two, but I have said all along that you can do the same things with the Nikon that you can with the Canon. So let's take a look at the settings, so you know what to look for if you working with Nikon gear. So let's start with the flash. The first thing that we have to do is that when we turn it on, we have to go past the ON button and go over to Remote. Now in order to do that, I actually have to hold this button while I am turning the switch. I am going to try that right now.

Setting menus on a Nikon camera and flash

Well, let's take a look at the Nikon camera and flash. Now I haven't been shooting as much with these two, but I have said all along that you can do the same things with the Nikon that you can with the Canon. So let's take a look at the settings, so you know what to look for if you working with Nikon gear. So let's start with the flash. The first thing that we have to do is that when we turn it on, we have to go past the ON button and go over to Remote. Now in order to do that, I actually have to hold this button while I am turning the switch. I am going to try that right now.

That activates the flash, and it puts it in Remote mode. So the next thing I am going to go look for is the Group and the Channel. By default, they should be set to A and 1, and you are just confirming that by looking at it right here. Everything looks good. So we are ready to turn our attention to the camera now. So let's turn our attention to the menu on the Nikon, and I am going to start by pressing the menu button. And we are going to go to the Custom Setting menu, and that's the pencil. You see it in the left-hand column there.

And then navigate down to the Bracketing/flash menu. Once you are there, go ahead and press the OK button. And that brings us to Flash cntrl for built-in flash. So I am just going to go right down there. I am going to hit the OK button again, and now we want to be in Commander mode. So I am going to hit the OK button one more time. Now you notice, by default, the Built-in flash is in TTL mode. We actually don't want it to fire. So I am going to change it so it's disabled.

So I am going to do that by just clicking, so that we get the two dashes there. Once I do that, I can hit the side button to move down. Group A is in TTL. That's what we want. That's the Group that we are using for our flash, or flashes, and then the other thing we want to confirm is that the Channel is set to 1. These are default settings, but you want to confirm them. Once you do that, you have to hit the OK button again to lock these settings in.

So all I am going to do now is I am just going to navigate back to confirm our settings. So I am going to go ahead and hit OK here, and then I am going to go down to Commander mode. As we see, our Built-in flash is off, and Group A is in TTL mode, and we are in Channel 1, and that matches up with what we have up here.

So everything looks terrific here. It all matches up between the flash and camera. I am ready to shoot. Keep in mind that this can vary slightly from model to model, from flash to flash, but for our settings right here, we are ready to go.
