The senior portrait is a traditional rite of passage for a high school student. But senior portraits aren't what they used to be: staid, format portraits shot in front of a mottled gray background. These days, an effective senior portrait conveys the personality of its subject, and is often shot on-location or outdoors.
In this course, photographer and educator Derrick Story details the art and the process of modern senior portraiture, from working with the subject and his or her parents to plan a shot list, to shooting indoors and out, to delivering the final shots. Along the way, he examines gear and workflow considerations, including lighting, sharing proofs, and post-processing.
And because senior portraiture is a potentially lucrative business, the course concludes with a discussion of various business angles, including developing a pricing strategy, connecting with local high schools, marketing through social media outlets, and more.
Hi, I'm Derrick Story. I'm a photographer. I shoot portraits, and I've been shooting senior portraits for a long time. I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of the things I've learned over the years in this course. We'll start out by looking at contracts and shot lists, the business side of portrait photography, to make sure that everything is in order before you go out on location for your shoot. You're going to come along with me on not one, but two, portrait shoots, and we have both male and female on both shoots.
One will be indoors. The other will be out. I'll use natural light, fill flash, reflectors, and then once we're done with that, we'll sit down at the computer and I'll show you how to sort the images, how to do a little bit of image editing, and then how to share those shots with the clients, so that they can turn them into their yearbook or they can use them on their social media pages. So, if you're primary interest is senior portraits, or you enjoy portrait photography in general, the tips and techniques in this course will help improve your photography.
