If you are headed to Hong Kong from the U.S., your flight will be a long one. You'll likely leave in the afternoon and get here the next night. To arrive in the best shape and minimize the effects of jet lag eat light, skip the alcohol, and aim for about five hours of sleep on the flight. You'll need some sleep to function when you arrive, but you don't want a full eight hours or you'll have trouble getting to sleep on local time when you arrive the next night. Think of it as a normal day after waking up at home followed by a shortened 11-hour day. You don't need the full night's sleep on the shortened second day. Customs in Hong Kong is a pretty smooth process. Just make sure you do a little research and are not bringing in anything that you shouldn't. Cigarettes, for instance, are highly regulated and taxed in Hong Kong. Bring in more than you should and you'll pay through the nose in added duties.
