Rich Text Format, or .RTF, is a file format developed by Microsoft in the late 1980s for embedding fonts and other formatting into text files. It's also capable of displaying images. It's principle advantage is that it's widely supported by most word processors. In fact, you don't even need a word processor. RTF files can be opened in Wordpad and text edits, the basic text editing programs included by default on Windows and Mac operating systems. However, RTF is no longer under active development. Its role as a cross-platform file type is increasingly being taken over by the XML-based OpenDocument format, which is used not only in open source suites such as Apache Open Office and Libra Office, but also in proprietary word processors, such as Microsoft Word. Nevertheless, because of its widespread support, I think it's worth looking at how to export data to RTF.
