In OneNote 2010 you can now easily create a link to any existing page in a notebook or even to a new page by simply typing the wiki link syntax. Let's give it a try using our Conference3 notebook here. With the Main Event section or tab selected and the Schedules tab under Pages selected, you'll notice we have a short note here that kind of,shows us the various days in our Conference and we do see Workshops, and there is a Workshops tab that already exists. So let's click in front of the W in the first Workshops for Day1 and add the syntax you may be accustomed to if you're familiar with wiki pages.
It's simply brackets. We're going to put the left brackets in before the W, two of them. And those square brackets need to appear on the right-hand side as well. But we'll use the right-hand brackets. And as soon as you hit the second one on your keyboard, watch what happens. It turns into a link. And as we hover over that link, you can see it's going to take us to the Workshops section because it already exists. So we click once and it takes us directly to the Workshops tab. That's an existing section. What about creating new pages? We can also do that.
Let's just click to the right of Pre-Conference Workshops. Let's say we want to create a new page for Post Conference Workshops and create the link from this page to that page. All we have to do is start typing. Again, we are going to use the same syntax. We will start with a couple brackets on the left. And now we will type in Post Conference Workshops. That's the title we want for our new page. We add the two brackets on the right. And watch what happens after you hit the second one. There it is.
We've created a link to Post Conference Workshops that never existed until now. It automatically created the new page, Post Conference Workshops. When we click there, you can see we've got our new blank page and we are ready to start adding the details for this particular page. And of course, if we want to create links there's other ways to do them as well. Let's just type in some text. We'll just click anywhere on the page and type in Go to Pre-Conference Workshops.
And we can select that text and create a link out of it. We can do that by going up to Insert. You'll notice the Links group has a Links button, click that, and now we see a list of all our notebooks, sections, and pages. So in this case we are going to expand Workshops. We want to go to Pre-Conference Workshops so we select that and click OK. We've created a link to that particular page. We can test it by clicking it. Sure enough it takes us right back there. So you can see we've got all kinds of cross links through our various pages in our notebook.
All this new wiki linking functionality in OneNote 2010 does enable you to easily create wiki like notebooks with lots of cross-links across pages.
