Occasionally, we will want to change the way we are viewing our contacts. Let me show you what Outlook lets us easily change. To begin with, on the left-hand side while viewing our contacts, we can change the Current View. Currently, I am showing the Business Card view. This shows large, easy-to-read cards for each of your contacts. If you type a letter on your keyboard, it will jump straight to last names that begin with that letter. You can also navigate using the scroll bar on the right or click on the letters on the far right.
Other views on the left include By Category and By Company. As the name suggests, clicking By Company groups each contact by their company. I can also view the generic Phone List. By default, this shows each contact without any grouping. If I click on a column heading, like Full Name or Company, I can sort by that column. But by far, the most powerful way to display your contacts in my opinion is By Category.
On the left-hand side, I will choose By Category. You can see that I've already applied categories to each of my contacts and here they are neatly displayed grouped by those categories. Note that Outlook 2007 uses the same categories for your contacts as with other objects in Outlook, including your messages and tasks. The use of the Category feature is discussed in Chapter 7, and now you can customize your contacts listing anyway you see fit.
