You may find there are times when you don't want the audience to even see the speaker icon on the screen. Here's how to hide it. The first way is a classic from the early days of PowerPoint. Just drag the icon off the screen into the gray area. The speaker won't even be seen on the slide during your presentation but it will function normally. Another old school method used to be the hide the speaker icon behind another graphic, but there's no need for either of those workarounds anymore.
A better way to hide it in PowerPoint 2010 is to click on your sound to select it and then go up to the Audio tools Playback tab. In the center there are series of Audio Options. Find the option that says Hide during Show and click the checkmark. Now when it played the slideshow though, I've got a problem. My sound will be hidden so I can't click on it to start the slip. So if I'm going to hide my clip, I have to have some way to start it. The simpler solution is to change the Start On Click to Start Automatically.
So that my sound plays as soon as I go on to its slide. But if you do this, here's a trap that you might fall into. Click on the Animations ribbon and then go to the Animation pane. Notice that first I have my Content Place Holder. That's all my bullet points. And below that is my sound clip. If I want my sound to start at the beginning of the slide, I need to click on the top edge my sound and drag it up above my Content Place Holder. Notice that it now has a 0, indicating that it will start playing automatically and before my bullet points.
Now when I'll play my slideshow my sound start by itself and there's no icon to clutter my visuals. (Male speaker: ?my anniversary and I forgot about it.) I'll click Escape. A more complex way is to add a separate object that triggers the audio clip when I click it. We'll talk about triggering sounds with objects in the next chapter of this course. When you don't want your sound clip icon to appear on your slide at all, using these techniques allows you to hide the image completely.
