Outlook allows for the customization of the Quick Access Toolbar, a little row of icons that appears just above the File tab in the Ribbon. What's important to remember is that Outlook actually has several Quick Access Toolbars: one while you're looking at the main Outlook window, a different one while you're writing an e-mail, another one while creating an appointment, and so on. Each can be configured to suit your needs. One of the most commonly added icons to the Quick Access Toolbar is Print, so we'll start with that. I want a simple Print icon so that I can quickly print whatever I have got selected.
I'll pull down the Customize Quick Access Toolbar menu, select Print, and I'm done. Now I'll just test it out. Notice that the Quick Access icons are available regardless of which Ribbon tab I have selected. But what about a less common command, such as creating a new note? That option doesn't exist in the customize menu, but we do see it under New Items.
When I find the icon, I can right-click on it and Add it to the Quick Access Toolbar. As for really obscure commands that can't be found in the Ribbon, I'll need to choose More Commands. From here, I can choose commands from the All Commands list or any other subset, find what I want, and then add it to the Quick Access Toolbar.
Remember that other windows, such as the New Email and New Appointment windows, have their own Quick Access Toolbars. I might want to add some common formatting features to my new e-mail Quick Access Toolbar, or spellcheck, word count, or anything else, and they're all accomplished the same way. As I compose an e-mail, I can go to the Format Text tab, find Bullets, right-click on it, and add it to the Quick Access Toolbar, or pull down the Customize menu, find spellcheck, and select it.
