In this course, author Gini Courter introduces the form creation tools found in Word 2007 and shows how to produce electronic forms that are visually pleasing and easy to navigate. The course covers designing a form; capturing data effectively with dropdown lists, date pickers, and text boxes; and adding controls for repeating data using the Word Content Control Toolkit. The course also includes tutorials on testing, protecting, and distributing forms.
Prerequisite Course: Word 2007 Essential Training
In the previous movie I used the Word 2007 Content Control toolkit to create a schema that corresponds to the content controls in our template, Letter of Agreement-Marked Up.dotx. I have one more thing that I need to do. If you closed the Word 2007 Content Control toolkit between the last movie and this one, it's a really good idea to go ahead and say, I'd like to import my XML document that I saved in the last movie and it will fill in here again.
But I'm assuming that you followed along with me or have imported your XML document into the editor that represents your schema, and let's now take a look at our Binding view. The Binding view shows the root and then each of the three nodes that we created and within that the additional nodes that represent our content controls. So I'm going to simply open this all up and show you how we're going to bind these nodes in our schema to these controls. Let's start with Submit Date. I'm going to click it or even double-click it so I make sure that I have it selected.
Grab the icon and drag and drop it onto Submit Date. Key things to note: I'm in the Bind view, I double-click to select and after I've done this, the Word 2007 Content Control toolkit will write a description, an XPath, that tells us how to get to this Submit Date and the schema. It's not that hard to read. It says that there's a root followed by a form node, followed by the submit date node, just what you see right here.
Let's go ahead and take a legal name and bind it here. Notice it says legalname, let's double-click shortname. Drag its icon and drop it on compshortname. The only thing you have to really worry about here is to make sure that you've selected it, that you haven't just clicked it in such a way to you didn't really select it, and that you drop it on the correct content control on the left. I'm going to go ahead then and grab End Date, and finally traincenter.
This all done, we're all mapped. Again, if at any point during this mapping we had needed to look up the Word template again, it's only one click away but we're all set. So I'm going to go ahead and save this. What I'm saving is not the XML; I saved that earlier. I'm actually saving Letter of Agreement- Marked Up.dotx with this new schema attached to it. And I'm ready to exit, so I'm going to choose File and Exit to close this document and close the Word 2007 Content Control toolkit.
I'm all ready now to switch back to Word and finish up this template.
