You can also customize Word's Ribbon to show or hide tabs and rearrange the order in which they appear in various views. To get started, choose Ribbon Preferences from the menu at the far right end of the Ribbon. The options at the top control the general operation of the Ribbon. Turn on the ribbon enables the Ribbon. If you turn this off, the Ribbon won't show at all. Expand ribbon when document opens, displays additional options on the Ribbon depending on the type of document that's open.
Hide group titles hides the titles of option groups along the top of the Ribbon. The Customize area let's you set customization options. You can use the Appearance menu to choose between two different color schemes: Word Blue and Graphite, which is gray. You can then use the scrolling list to toggle which Ribbons and groups should appear in each view and to rearrange the tabs that do appear. So we've got different views here. we've got Print Layout View. If we scroll down here, you've got Publishing Layout View, and we've also got Notebook Layout View.
So these are the different Views. The checkboxes are for the different tabs on the Ribbon and then underneath of them are also some groups. So you can elect to turn on certain hidden groups if you like. So maybe under the Home Ribbon, I'll turn on these two. They'll add it to the Home Ribbon. Also you can scroll down and you can change the order in which different tabs appear. So you just grab one with your mouse and drag it up or down and you can change the order, and you could do this for the whole Ribbon under different views.
When you've got it set the way you like, click OK, and that will save your changes. So for example, here under the Home tab, I've added these two groups, and I also changed the order in which these groups appear. You can also change the order in which Ribbon tabs appear by dragging the Ribbon. Choose Customize Ribbon Tab Order, and then you've got these little handles now that appear. You can drag a tab into a new position, or if you want to remove a tab from the Ribbon, you could click its Close button and that'll remove it.
When you're all finished, click Done and the Ribbon is changed. To reset the Ribbon, choose Customize Ribbon Tab Order from the menu at the far right end again, and then click the Reset button up here, and then Ribbon gets reset to its original settings. So as you can see, it isn't difficult to reconfigure the Ribbon so it displays the tabs and groups you want to see in the order you want to see them. You can use this feature to customize Word's Ribbon so it looks and works the way you want it to.
