Numbers offers intuitive organization features, allowing users to focus more on analysis and presentation. In Numbers '09 Essential Training, David Rivers explores the important features of this spreadsheet application and introduces the new tools for formula development and charting. He walks through the new functionality of charts, tables, and templates, and shows how to make spreadsheets effective and eye-catching. Exercise files accompany the course.
When we are ready to create a new spreadsheet using Numbers '09, our first step will be to launch the application and there are few different ways to do this. For example, in Finder, you can access all of the iWork '09 applications including Numbers '09 from the Go menu. You can also type Numbers into the Spotlight search field to locate the application quickly, but during the iWork '09 installation process, the Numbers '09 icon is placed on the dock for you. One click will launch the application making this the fastest and easiest way to get started.
If it's your first time using Numbers '09, you'll be greeted by the Welcome to Numbers window. Here you can access Video Tutorials and Hands-on Help. You can bypass this window by clicking the Close button, but if you don't wish to see this window each time you launch Numbers '09, deselect the checkbox next to Show this window. When you click Close, you'll then be greeted by the Template Chooser. Numbers displays this window to help you get started. Now Chapter 11 in this title is dedicated to working with templates, but let's get a brief overview now of our Template Chooser.
Templates contain predefined sheets, tables, formulas and other elements that help you get started and Numbers provides a wide variety of templates and as you can see, they are organized in two different categories. As you select a category, you'll see thumbnail representations for each of the templates available under that category. As you move your mouse pointer across these thumbnails, you'll see additional sheets that can be created using the selected template. If you wish to increase or decrease the size of these thumbnails, use the thumbnail slider at the bottom of this window. Drag the button to the right to increase the size of the thumbnails, drag it to the left to decrease the size.
Now we can also open recently used or existing files from the Template Chooser. But let's say we need to create a brand new spreadsheet to help us track the various tasks and cost of a home improvement project. In this case, we might select the Personal category. As we scroll through the various thumbnails, we'll find one for Home Improvement. One click will select the thumbnail. Now to get started, click the Choose button. This creates a brand new spreadsheet using the selected template. We are now well on our way.
