Video: Using type as a design element

The number of ways you can animate type in Motion is almost endless. So in this video we'll cover a simple type animation and another a slightly more complicated build. Let's watch the project we have open. And you can see we have a bunch of different textures that you probably see in an interior design or a home remodeling show. Specifically we are going to build a graphic element that would appear just before the big remodel reveal of the living room. So we need to add some words in here.

Using type as a design element

The number of ways you can animate type in Motion is almost endless. So in this video we'll cover a simple type animation and another a slightly more complicated build. Let's watch the project we have open. And you can see we have a bunch of different textures that you probably see in an interior design or a home remodeling show. Specifically we are going to build a graphic element that would appear just before the big remodel reveal of the living room. So we need to add some words in here.

We want to go ahead and create some visual interest with type, so press T to select your Type tool and position your cursor in the middle of the screen, right over the red line. Go ahead and click on your canvas. And now type the word REMODEL in all caps. You can press Enter in your keypad to set the text. Now that we have one of our type elements on the screen, let's go ahead and create our second type element. Instead of having to grab the Type tool this time, I want you to go ahead and hold the Option key down, and click and drag on the word, and drag up in one motion.

Now we've just made a duplicate of our first word, so let's rename our copy. Go ahead and double-click directly on the text in the canvas and notice all the text will be selected. This time I want you to type the word Living and then Room with only one capital letter at the start of each line. So go ahead and press Enter when you're done setting that type. Now let's position our type. If we move Living Room, we want to move Living Room over here to the left and the type is left justified.

Now this looks relatively okay, but I would still like to tighten up the space between these two words. So press F7 to open up your HUD. And we can close this gap a little bit just by using line spacing. Go ahead and just click and drag to the left. And now we have Living Room kind of optimized. Let's just click on the background so we can see the words Living Room alone. Typically I wouldn't use this thin of a font for anything broadcast. But a lot of times if you use a font that's this thin, you can get around any ringing problems just by selecting the type layer, and adjusting its Opacity.

So let's press F5 to open up the type layer and we can go ahead and just select our second layer down here for our Living Room. Now let's go ahead and lower its Opacity down to around 75%. Now it's blending into the background a little bit more and were not getting that much of a contrast. Now the second word over here, REMODEL, I would like to use this as an element that repeats all the way across the page. So instead of having to try and click directly on the text inside the canvas and then editing, etcetera, all you have to do is navigate to the Inspector tab and under the Text Format section, if you scroll down to the bottom, you'll notice hey, I can load some text in here as well.

So let's go ahead and click in that box and I am just going to copy the word REMODEL. And move my cursor to the end and make sure to add a space in between and I'll just paste. And you can repeat this as many times as you like. Just understand, the more times you repeat it, the more RAM and file space you're going to be taking up. There we go. I think we have a decent amount of REMODEL type in there. But another thing we need to do is probably adjust the width of the type.

I would like this text to be moving from right to left, but also I would like this text to actually have texture inside each letter. So let's go ahead and get started by changing the REMODEL font. If you don't have the HUD already open, press F7 and click and hold your mouse button down on the left-hand side and notice as we scroll up and down, the typeface will update in the canvas. Again, you have to make sure your mouse button is held down and you'll see that update. Now, I would like to just use Impact because I know that that's a pretty beefy typeface and if we use that as a map to show off some of these textures, we would have enough space to do so.

So with REMODEL selected, back in your HUD let's go ahead and raise the size of the words a little bit. I would like the letters to actually be placed so a little bit of each letter sticks out above the line and below the line. So that looks relatively okay. What we need to do is animate this type. If you begin playback, notice absolutely nothing is happening. What we need to do is apply a behavior. If we go up to the top of your interface here with the Add Behavior button, let's go to Basic Motion and throw this text across the screen.

If we go ahead and choose Throw, you would need to have the HUD open so you can choose a specific direction for the type to travel in. So if you click in the center and then drag out towards the left, you'll notice our type is just going to move towards the left. If you hold down Shift as you're dragging, that will make sure that you snap directly on the X or the Y-axis when you get close. Now let's press the spacebar and see what it looks like. All right! That's actually looking pretty cool.

But I still want to fill up the text with some of these textures. So in order to do that, I'll just stop playback for a second and select the word REMODEL. Actually we're going to get to selecting the type in a little bit. We should have selected the background layer. So select the background layer, then go up under Object and choose Add Image Mask. Now once you choose Add Image Mask, you'll get a drop well. And notice, in fact, we got three of them. There is one that appears in the Layers panel, there is one that appears in the HUD, and there is obviously one that appears in the Inspector.

So now we just have to specify exactly what is going to generate that mask. So click on the word REMODEL and drag it down into any of the three different mask wells. Now that's actually looking pretty good, but unfortunately we hid the rest of our background. So we need to duplicate the background layer by selecting it and pressing Command+D Now select the bottommost image mask, and then press Delete on your keyboard. Now even though we can't see this type right now, there is actually an Alpha channel that's being applied.

And if you want to double- check, all you have to do is turn the visibility of the bottommost layer off. And you can see yes, this type is getting cut out of the background. So let's go ahead and turn the Background back on. And now we need to focus on the Living Room type. Now with this type, I want to go ahead and apply a behavior. If we go over to the Library tab under Behaviors, let's look at Text Animation. One of the very first most basic applications for animating text.

Let's choose Sequence Text. So now that we have the Sequence Text behavior selected and the Living text layer, let's go ahead and click Apply in the top of the Library panel. Now let's play back our animation and see what we've got. A whole lot of nothing! And that's because we've really haven't applied any specific parameters to the Sequence behavior. So let's go to the Inspector. And in the Inspector tab, notice Sequence Text is loaded up under Behaviors.

Under Parameter, click on the Add pull-down. Let's go to the Format section and apply Rotation. Now we just added a rotation to this behavior. If you open the disclosure triangle to the left of Rotation, notice now we can rotate on the X, Y or Z. So let's rotate on the Y. Go ahead and change that number to 180. And if you go ahead and press Play one more time, notice that we have individual characters spinning around.

So that's close, but not quite. If you look in our HUD here, notice the Unit Size is set to Character. Click on that and change that to Line. Close, but no cigar! Let's keep poking around here for a second and go to the Text section and under the Layout section, you want to go to Anchor Point. And change that pull-down to Line as well. Now it looks like it's actually spinning the right way.

If we go ahead and preview our animation, yes, that's the general spin. But the problem is the axis is off. So click and drag on the left drop-well here in the Position window. And if you notice, the axis is moving, but it's still not quite the correct thing. It's sort of way off from the individual words. That's because this is the Position anchor point. So that's not the axis we're looking for. We need to actually make an adjustment in the Format section.

Under Format, here's Offset. Now if we click and drag on the left drop-well for that, sure enough it looks like we're getting the proper rotation. Click and drag till around 55 and see if that's worked out. Go ahead and press Play to preview your animation. You can see now my words are actually rotating around the proper axis. It's taking quite a while for this to rotate. And that's because we have it set up to sequence only once through the entire animation.

Now to speed that up, all we have to do is just trim the behavior. So if you move your mouse to the lower right section of your timeline, when you see this trim bar, if you go ahead and click and drag that to the left, notice as we're dragging, I am getting a contextual menu, letting me know the exact duration of my new position here. So let's go ahead and move our playback to the beginning and press Play. And there we go. That is a lot more like what I was looking for.

So now all we have to do is bring back the REMODEL text that we had set in earlier. And we can actually do that with one filter. So select the Background layer and then go up to the Add Filter button in your toolbar and we want to go to Glow and look what happens when you apply Bloom. Check it out. It's automatically pulled out the type from the background. You can definitely adjust the Amount, the Brightness, or the Threshold. But I think this is looking pretty good right now.

I just sort of want to mess with the layer hierarchy. I don't like the fact that this rectangle is covering up my REMODEL text. So if we click and drag to move the rectangle below our type, just make sure that it's still above the main Background layer, and make sure you're not dropping it into the image mask. So when we let go, now we have our type over top of the color channel. Now the type is popping out too much so we need to bring its Opacity down. If you select the Background layer with the image mask, all we have to do is just bring its Opacity down and now we've got our Living Room set up with our REMODEL type.

Go ahead and press Play and check out the animation. If you really liked how relatively simple it was to animate the spinning type in Motion, just wait. Like I said at the beginning in this video, the possibilities are literally endless and there's much more on the way.
