In Motion: Principles of Motion Graphics, Ian Robinson shares the core concepts and techniques used to create real-world motion graphic elements in Apple Motion. The course starts with finding the initial inspiration for a project and then covers how to bring those ideas to life using the tools in Motion, including type treatments, filters, textures, and lighting. Two projects demonstrating how to animate a title sequence and how to assemble a graphics package are also included. Exercise files accompany the course.
Now before we jump right into creating motion graphics, it's important that we discuss a few different settings that you should pay attention to when you're using Motion. As we go through the rest of this course, I want to make sure that we're all on the same page with how Motion should look and function. First thing instead of opening preferences, I want you go to the upper right side of the interface and you'll see these pull-downs up here. You want to pay special attention to the Render options pulldown. If you're noticing Motion lagging when it's trying to playback some footage, go ahead and lower your resolution.
Motion is always going to try and playback in real-time. So a lot of times if it's not playing in real-time, I'll just go ahead and lower the quality or lower the resolution or turn off something that I may not be using, like shadows or lightning. You get the general idea. Just go ahead and come over here and check your resolution and quality settings and adjust them accordingly. Now I want to warn you one thing about this. When you change the resolution of the quality, if you go to export a video file, make sure your export settings are actually set to full quality.
If you want to be paranoid, by all means come back over to the pulldown menu and set everything to the highest quality. Now it's time to jump into preferences. So go up to the main Motion and go down to your Preferences. The main area I want to focus on right here is the Projects section. First off, I've set mind up for ten- second duration. Obviously you can set yours up however you like. I like to display my time as Timecode. You can display yours as frames; I just don't want you to be confused if you look down here and obviously your interface didn't look like mine.
Now the next big thing that I found trips a lot of people up is this Create Layers At option. Basically when you're playing Motion and you're working in real-time, the playhead is going to be moving around the Timeline constantly and you'll constantly be starting and stopping Motion. Now the problem I've had, I'll stop Motion in the middle of the Timeline and then decided I want to add in an asset, and if you don't have Create Layers at Start of project set, any time your playhead is not right at the beginning of the project that file is not going to appear until later in the Timeline.
So make sure you have create layers set to start of project. Now obviously you can set your own settings I'm just trying to make sure we're all on the same page. Now last thing let's go to the General section. Look at the first pulldown menu under Startup. I like to set mine to Open the Last Project(s), by default. It's set up to Show the Welcome Screen, so set it up for Open the Last Project and we will all be squared away. So now you know how I'll have Motion set up for the rest of this course.
