In my mind using Replicate in Motion is very much like using Make Particles. It just means you have a lot more control. So to show you what I'm talking about, select the tree in the center of your canvas. Now this is just the tree graphic I grabbed out of the library. Let's go to the Inspector and in the top of the toolbar click Replicate. Hopefully, your Inspector is updated to the Replicator tab, but if it hasn't click on the Replicator tab. Let's go through some of these options.
First off, you will notice it's created a rectangle shape. So you can click-and-drag on any of the corners and rescale the replicate. What's great about this, as you can see, it's a very easy fast way to create complex patterns. But you should see what happens when you actually get to animate it. Just like anything else in Motion you can always Ctrl-click and then add parameters behaviors to your heart's content. But there are a couple of things we should go over with the Replicator first.
In the Column section you notice we can change how many columns there are and how many rows. That's pretty straightforward. The Tile Offset is sort of nice to animate, because it offsets the sections of the tile. But the thing I want you to keep your eye on right here is the Origin, because as you adjust different things, let's say the Angle End, you notice the ones in the center aren't nearly as rotated as the ones on the edge. The reason for that is the Origin. It's set up at the Center.
So if we set it in the Upper Left, look what happens. Let me rescale this down just a little bit so we can see it a little better. I'm just going to click on the corner and drag it down. You notice in the upper left the trees are almost vertical. It's kind of hard to see because there are so many branches overlapping. So let's adjust the scale. Just click the Scale slider and drag it down. Here we go. That's a little bit better. So keep your eye on the Origin when you look at changing aspects of the Replicator. Now just like a Particle Emitter you can actually have more than cell in your Replicator.
Press F5 on your keyboard and you will notice we have a Replicator cell as well as the Replicator itself. So let's pick something out of the library to add into the Replicator. Go to the Library tab and down under Content, we can use absolutely anything. I'm just going to go the Vector Art section and we can add this Benedictine shape. It's kind of neat. Just drag it right into your Layers tab and I'll scale it down before we add it to the Replicator, just clicking on the corner control handle and holding down Shift+Option, so it scales around the center.
Now that we have resized that, let's add it to the Replicator. Just drag it and drop it holding your mouse button down until you see the green + button and let go. Of course, we have to turn off the Visibility of the original Replicator layer, but you notice now the Replicator cell has been added to be the Replicator. So if we go the Inspector back over here, we could change the specific aspects of just the individual particle cell. Now should you want to change the opacity or the color of an individual cell, you can choose any of the other Color options.
For example, Colorize and Ctrl-click in the dropwell and change the color. Then if you want to change the Opacity of everything overall, just click on the one Opacity chip that's there and bring it down with the slider. So we have a Replicator and two Replicator cells. We learned a little bit about how to adjust the Replicator cells. Let's go back to the Replicator one last time and look at some other options. Under Shape, we start out with a Rectangle, but you can choose Circle, a Burst, which actually creates a really cool kind of pattern as you can see.
You can adjust different things like the number of arms or the points in the arms and really kind of get crazy and create some pretty amazing things. So the last thing I want to show with the Replicator is geometry. If you want to create your own shape to replicate, go ahead and create a shape. And just to show you, I'm going to grab the Bezier tool and draw a shape out onto the canvas. With the shape drawn, I'll grab my Select tool and now we can click and drag the Bezier shape into the dropwell, but before we do that we have to select the Replicator and lock that tab off.
So now I drag the Bezier shape into the geometry Shape Source and now you will notice it's replicated along that custom shape. So please feel free to go through and create your own replicators and Ctrl-click on the different sections of the Replicator to add different parameter behaviors.
