In Motion 4 Essential Training, Ian Robinson shows how to start building outstanding motion graphics and animations for video production. He demonstrates how to build custom text animations with the new Adjust Glyph tool and explores Motion’s amazing real-time 3D tools. Ian highlights working in the 3D space, creating depth with lights and shadows, and using reflections to add realism. He gives practical advice on how to integrate Motion into a professional video workflow, round-tripping with Final Cut Pro and sending a final project to Compressor. Exercise files accompany this course.
The Focus behavior makes animating a wrack focus in Motion really quite easy. Now if your scene doesn't look like this, you want to go up to the Render pop-up menu and make sure that you've enabled Depth of Field. And for this exercise, if your computer is really slow, you might consider disabling Shadows. That should definitely speed things up a little bit. So let's check out the project, press F5 to open the project pane, and you'll notice we have a Camera, and we have some text that's laid out. You'll notice if you actually go in the Inspector under the Text tab, under Layout, the text is in Global 3D.
So it will render properly when trying to interpret Depth of Field. So let's select the Camera. If you don't see the Depth of Field options, make sure you expand the little disclosure triangle here. By default, we have a Blur amount of 10, and we have a blurry scene. So to bring it in focus, all we have to do is go up to Add Behavior > Camera and choose Focus. Now with the Focus behavior applied, all we have to do is drop the target into the dropwell. So in one quick motion, click on the words, Motion 4, and drag and drop them into the dropwell.
And when you let go, now the behavior has been applied and you notice the behavior by default will take up the entire length of the comp. So I want those to get in focus rather quickly. So let's just trim the length of the behavior by clicking and dragging on the right-hand side. We'll make it about 48 frames. Now just press Play, and you'll notice Motion 4 comes right into focus and we'll still have a really nice Depth of Field on the camera. If I stop playback here for a second, you notice we still have good blur going right into the word, Motion 4, and in focus is slightly out of focus.
Now even though, this is the only behavior on this camera, trying adding a Sweep to check out your results. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.
