In Motion 4 Essential Training, Ian Robinson shows how to start building outstanding motion graphics and animations for video production. He demonstrates how to build custom text animations with the new Adjust Glyph tool and explores Motion’s amazing real-time 3D tools. Ian highlights working in the 3D space, creating depth with lights and shadows, and using reflections to add realism. He gives practical advice on how to integrate Motion into a professional video workflow, round-tripping with Final Cut Pro and sending a final project to Compressor. Exercise files accompany this course.
Archiving is one of those features that you really don't miss until it's not there. For anybody who's ever been through the process of trying to relink missing files, please pay attention and use this feature till the cows come home because it's wonderful. Go up under the File menu and choose Save As, and you will notice at the bottom we have an option for Collect Media. When you go to archive your project, it's a good idea to make sure to choose Copy to Folder, and then once you have chosen that option, go down to the bottom and de-select Include Unused Media.
This way Motion will throw away anything that's imported into your Media tab that you didn't actually use in your project. So if it's not in your canvas, it's not going to be archived. This is a great way to throw away all those elements that you dragged in and then really didn't like and they may still be sitting in the Media tab. And so you want to make sure to pay attention whether you select or de-select this. I am just going to export this to the Desktop and rename the file Archive.
Let's choose Save and once this is done exporting, I'm going to go open the Finder. You will notice on my Desktop, now I have an archive folder and in there, it named the project Archive, and included all the media. This is important because it even included the media out of the library in Motion. So if you are sending it somewhere else and you are not sure whether they have correctly installed their Motion Library, this way all the media will actually be available when they open up the Archive project.
Last thing I want to point out. It did actually receive the file name for this project and opened the new project. So to sum up, archiving will copy not only your project, but all its related source files into one nice self-contained folder.
