Now, typically when somebody applies a filter to something, they're doing it for one of two reasons. Now I'm generalizing here, but play along for a minute. The first reason would be color correction, for example, a shot like this. But the second reason would be to create an artistic style and we'll cover that in a second, but I just wanted you to get the fundamentals of filters right now. So let's go ahead to the Library and look at some of the different options. In the Library tab, you'll notice we have Filters and Image Units.
They are both the same thing, the deference being Image Units are based of off core image, which is Apples technology built into the operating system of the computer and its how OS X actually renders out graphics. So Image Unites are actually really fast way to render some of these effects. But filters function basically the exact same way. It's just behind the scenes they function slightly differently. So let's look at some of the Color Correction options under these filters.
So go to Color Correction and first thing I want to adjust is the Brightness of this image, because right now it's really dark. Let's drag-and-drop Brightness right onto the canvas and we'll open our HUD to make a change. Let's drag the Brightness up to around 1.4. Now, it's really washed out. So we should probably add some Contrast. Drag that right onto your footage and now we can adjust the contrast. Let's stop for a second and press Play.
Already, there is a pretty dramatic difference. Now, feel free to click through and apply a whole bunch of other filters, but for right now I just want you to notice the difference. So press F5 to open the Layers tab and hide the HUD. Let's turn off both Contrast and Brightness and you'll notice the difference pretty quickly. There is the Contrast, there is the Brightness. And actually as I look at it, the Brightness is a little two bright. So let me open HUD and just drag that back down. There we go.
So, as you can see sometimes when you're changing the colors in the footage, you should go back and turn on and off your filters just to make sure what you've done, still makes sense. Now, the last thing I want you to notice, when I made these adjustments, I just quickly used the HUD by pressing F7 on the keyboard, but you can also make adjustments directly in the Inspector. And you notice even though I only had one adjustment for Brightness in here, I also have an adjustment for Mix, which basically just mixes in the filter. So if you think the Adjustment was a little two harsh, you can kind of mix it back down a little bit.
So now that you have seen all the different ways we can adjust the filters, go back to the Library and check out all the other filters.
