Inserting video from YouTube

Video: Inserting video from YouTube

Now another way to get video inside of your Moodle course is to actually pull in video directly from YouTube and post it directly inside of your site. So let's first go ahead and find the video that we want to post inside of our Moodle course. And to do that we'll just go ahead and open a new tab, Command+T or Ctrl+T, and we'll go ahead and go to YouTube, www.youtube.com. Now when you get to YouTube, go ahead and do a Search for moodle_esst_teachers, and go ahead and click Search. You should find some videos that I have gone ahead and prepared already and posted up here for you to link into your course.

Inserting video from YouTube

Now another way to get video inside of your Moodle course is to actually pull in video directly from YouTube and post it directly inside of your site. So let's first go ahead and find the video that we want to post inside of our Moodle course. And to do that we'll just go ahead and open a new tab, Command+T or Ctrl+T, and we'll go ahead and go to YouTube, www.youtube.com. Now when you get to YouTube, go ahead and do a Search for moodle_esst_teachers, and go ahead and click Search. You should find some videos that I have gone ahead and prepared already and posted up here for you to link into your course.

The first video, Gymnothorax funebris, this is the same video we were just working with in the previous exercise. It's the Moray Eel video. So we'll go ahead and click on that link and you can see there it comes right up. There is a couple of ways you can go ahead and link this video into your course. One way is to simply come over to the URL. Select this URL right here, copy it and then create a link directly to this page and that would be effective in that, it would get your students directly to this page and they would be able to see the video that's up here on the YouTube.

But another more elegant way is to actually embed this video inside of one of your course pages. So to do that what we want is this Embed code. So let's go ahead and select the whole Embed code, just drag your cursor until it keeps going all the way to the very end and gets to the last part of the tag, and then do Command+C or Ctrl+C to Copy that code. Now let's go ahead and go back over to our course, and we'll scroll back down to week two. And we are going to add another resource and this time we are going to compose a web page.

So click on Compose a web page. We'll call this Green Moray Eel - YouTube. Now the description down here in the Summary for, Video of a Green Moray Eel. Scroll down to the bottom and we'll go ahead and give it a simple title, Green Moray Eel select that and make that a nice Heading 1, hit Return.

So we have got our page set up ready to go. Now we need to go into the source code. So we'll go over and click on the Toggle HTML Source button, and this going to take us into the HTML Source. Go ahead and just put a Return in and then Paste, Command+V or Ctrl+V, and it should paste that full object code that we copied from the YouTube site. So all that should be in there ready to go. We'll go ahead and click on the Toggle HTML Source, nothing appears initially and that's fine. Don't worry about that. Go ahead and scroll all the way down to the very bottom of the page and click the Save and display button.

After a few seconds the code gets activated and the YouTube video shows up directly inside of our page. So we can go ahead and click on the Play button and see that in fact the video is now being pulled directly from YouTube and pushed straight into our course. We can go ahead and return back to our course BIOL432, and if we scroll down to the bottom you can see here is the link and it's not showing a video icon, what it is showing is the web icon because what we created was a web page and it's not just a direct embedded video. And we can go ahead and click on that one more time just to see that it does in fact work. There we go and it's even showing us the name of the video, which we set to be the scientific name of this organism.

We can return back to our course. So embedding a YouTube video is simple enough. Just go ahead and create a new web page, give it a title, go into the HTML Source and paste in the Object code that you got from the YouTube page and return back to the WYSIWYG editor and then preview your page.
