With Media Composer 5 came the introduction of these buttons here to the left of the timeline called the Smart tools. Two of these functions are Trim functions. The yellow icon here is Ripple Trim and the red icon here is Overwrite Trim. In this movie, we'll learn how to use these to help further refine and tweak our sequence. Now if we have already used Ripple Trim on all of our A side and B side trims. So far we've only accessed it by entering Trim mode.

Using Ripple Trim and Overwrite Trim

The yellow icon here is Ripple Trim and the red icon here is Overwrite Trim. In this movie, we'll learn how to use these to help further refine and tweak our sequence. Now if we have already used Ripple Trim on all of our A side and B side trims. So far we've only accessed it by entering Trim mode.

You can also access it by pressing the Ripple Trim button and interacting with the transitions in a much more tactile way. Let's take a look at how it works. Now I have got a shot in here that's a little bit long and I'd like to shorten it and the method I know already is to simply go into Trim mode, go into A side trim and trim away our frames. Let's zoom in. I'll go into Trim mode and I'll A side trim and trim away.

You can see that it does affect the duration of my video tracks, and I have shortened this shot. I am going to Undo and let's perform that again but instead let's use the Ripple Trim button. The Ripple Trim button can be accessed via the user-interface or by pressing Shift+F. Then I simply have to just grab onto the transition and trim back. My cursor becomes the Ripple Trim icon anytime I approach a transition. So it knows when I want to trim.

To disable Ripple Trim I just Shift+F again. Now, I am going to undo that one more time and let's talk about Overwrite Trim. Instead of trimming this away and having all of my clips downstream fill in the gap, instead what I would like to do is trim away some frames here, and then find a different shot to overwrite in the space. To do this, I am going to use Overwrite Trim and again, I'm simply going to access my Overwrite Trim and the keyboard shortcut for this is Shift+D and then again, when my cursor approaches a transition, it becomes Overwrite Trim.

Keep in mind that if that I am to the left or to the right of a transition, it's Overwrite Trim. If I'm in the middle it goes back to Dual-Roller Trim. So I am simply going to click on the A side, drag back and it leaves filler in its place, leaving all other clips unaffected. I'll Shift+D again to disable Overwrite Trim. Again, I can go back to my bin, find a shot I'd like to put in there instead, mark the space in the Timeline, overwrite and that's it.

A lot of times, you'll use Overwrite Trim to simply leave a placeholder in the sequence until you find a suitable shot. Using Ripple Trim and Overwrite Trim lets you dynamically adjust which frames you show at any given point in your sequence and because trimming is so important to the overall editing process knowing which tools can help you achieve your goals is crucial.
