As we learned in the last movie, A-side single-roller trim is fairly intuitive. It lets us add or subtract frames from the A side of a transition. Now, B-side single-roller trim achieves the same purpose, to tighten or lengthen, to perfect the timing of a scene. Let's take a look at how we can use B- side single-roller trim to our advantage in further constructing our edit. Let's zoom in and I'm going to enter trim mode, Play Loop, and this time, let's take a look at the B side.

Using B-side Single-Roller Trim to improve audio timing

As we learned in the last movie, A-side single-roller trim is fairly intuitive. It lets us add or subtract frames from the A side of a transition. Now, B-side single-roller trim achieves the same purpose, to tighten or lengthen, to perfect the timing of a scene. Let's take a look at how we can use B- side single-roller trim to our advantage in further constructing our edit. Let's zoom in and I'm going to enter trim mode, Play Loop, and this time, let's take a look at the B side.

I'm going to lasso the transition. Play Loop by pressing Spacebar. (Music Playing.) (Male speaker 2: Start a Christmas tradition with Tony Williams's Urban?) I thought that was pretty good. I think we can tighten it up just a little bit. Let's take a look at a graphic that will explain exactly what we're going to be doing here. We're going to be performing a B-side trim as you see here. We are shortening the B side. Again the A side remains unaffected.

If we were going to lengthen it, we would be extending it trimming to the left, but it gets longer, and again, the A side remains unaffected. I'm going to enter B-side single-roller trim by clicking on the B-side monitor. Notice that I get my dual-roller to transfer to a single-roller trim. Again, we are in Ripple Trim and I'm going to probably just tighten it up right before she jumps over the first girl.

Again, I can use my Trim buttons here, which correspond to the M, Comma, Period, and Backslash keys on my keyboard. Let's see how we like that. (Music Playing.) (Male speaker 2: Start a Christmas tradition with Tony Williams's Urban?) (Male speaker 2: Start a Christmas tradition with Tony Williams's?) Okay, maybe just tightening it up a tiny bit more. Again, I'm trimming to the right. I'm reducing frames from the B side. This is called a reductive trim.

I'm going to take away three more. I now have 15 frames that I've removed from the B side, and I think that'll be good. Let's test. (Music Playing.) (Male speaker 2: Start a Christmas tradition with Tony Williams's Urban?) That's nice! We've got a nice tight edit there. Let's go ahead and fast-forward to our next trim and play loop. (Male speaker 2: Tony Williams's Urban Nutcracker, now in its 9th season.) (Male speaker 2: ...tradition with Tony Williams's Urban Nutcracker, now...) That's an awfully quick shot.

I might let it out a little bit. I'll go ahead and get in B -side single-roller trim. This time, instead of performing a reductive trim, I'll perform an additive trim. To access more frames or the handle of the B side, I'm going to trim to the left. I want to get a nice crisp start there, so I'll probably just stop when everybody is still. How about right there? It's 47 frames, about 2 seconds, so let's test.

(Male speaker 2: ...tradition with Tony Williams's Urban Nutcracker, now in its 9th season.) I'll tighten it up just a little bit, and I think that's good. I'm going to reduce my preroll here back to 2 seconds and let's look. (Male speaker 2: ?Urban Nutcracker, now in its 9th season.) I think that worked well. So, usually, I go through transition by transition and really see if I'm affecting the A side, the B side, or both.

I'm going to go back to my Magician sequence, and as you remember, we had a problem on the B side here. Let's enter trim, play loop, and see what we want to do about it. (Male speaker 2: ?a bit of a master himself.) (Male speaker 3: Show. So it's almost like a?) (Male speaker 2: ?a bit of a master himself.) (Male speaker 3: Show. So it's almost like a?) So, he has a few extra words before he says what he's supposed to. I'm going to zoom in a lot tighter here so that we can get this exactly right.

I'm going to click on the B side, and again, I'm in Ripple Trim now, and I'm going to press the Caps Lock key, so that I can hear him as I trim. (Male speaker 3: Show?) All right, I think that's where he says "it's." So I'm going to release. Again, I've performed a reductive trim, so I've taken away 15 frames from the B side, and let's play loop and see how it works.

(Male speaker 2: ?a bit of a master himself.) (Male speaker 3: So it's almost like a thread that?) (Male speaker 2: ?a bit of a master himself.) (Male speaker 3: So it's almost like a?) Looks like we got it right on. We've removed 15 frames from the B side and we've removed those extraneous words at the beginning of what he says. So, now that we know how to use both the A-side single-roller trim, and the B-side single-roller trim to improve our sequence, it's time to take a third pass on the sequence to tweak our video edits using dual-roller trim.
