To ensure the highest quality output to tape there are several things you need to do before just hitting Play and Record. While we can't cover all possible tape output options in this movie we'll discuss the basic steps to setting up a digital cut. When you record a digital cut, Media Composer plays the sequences, video and audio, pulling the media from your drives and recording it to a master tape. So there are a number of things to do to prepare yourself for a digital cut. First thing is you want to make sure your project format is set correctly.

Preparing a sequence for digital cut to print to tape

To ensure the highest quality output to tape there are several things you need to do before just hitting Play and Record. While we can't cover all possible tape output options in this movie we'll discuss the basic steps to setting up a digital cut. When you record a digital cut, Media Composer plays the sequences, video and audio, pulling the media from your drives and recording it to a master tape. So there are a number of things to do to prepare yourself for a digital cut. First thing is you want to make sure your project format is set correctly.

Occasionally you'll change to a standard definition flavor of your high-definition project to get better performance. In this case I'll just go to my Format tab and switch back to my HD flavor. Additionally, you want to go to the Video Quality menu down here. And most of the time you're working in Draft Quality, which is one quarter resolution. Now it does you no good to output your tape at one quarter resolution because you're going to want to get the highest quality possible.

Therefore, just right- click and choose Full Quality. It'll go from yellow-green to full-green. And now we're getting 100% resolution frames traveling through this system and the highest quality possible. Now keep in mind when you up your Video Quality, you may have some effects go from real-time effects to blue dot effects or those that need to be rendered. Therefore, make sure your entire sequence plays through and there are no additional effects to render. Lastly, you want to make sure that your audio is set correctly, specifically your Sample Rate.

When you're editing a sequence, you're able to edit with various sample rates 48 kHz to 44.1, 32. Well, you're going to want to make sure that they're all the same on a digital cut. To do this, it's quite easy. You just click on your sequence and right-click, Change Sample Rate. And convert your entire Sample Rate to 48 kHz. Quality High. Choose your media drive for it to create new media. And if you'd like, you can delete the original media after you've done this.

I recommend leaving this unchecked. Say OK and it's going to go through your sequence, analyze if any sample rates need to be changed, and change those for you. So before doing a digital cut, I'd recommend that you play the entire sequence through. Make sure all effects are playing through in real-time. And once everything is set correctly and your deck is set correctly, you're ready to go. So setting up your sequence for the best quality and most consistency as possible is necessary before printing to tape.
