In Avid Media Composer 5 Essential Training, author Ashley Kennedy demonstrates basic and intermediate editing techniques in Media Composer, one of the most widely used nonlinear, video editing systems. This course covers how to build sequences, mix audio, color correct footage, apply effects, and troubleshoot common post-production issues in Media Composer. Exercise files accompany the course.
So you know how to trim and you know how to use JKL navigation. So in this lesson we're going to put it all together to introduce one of the most powerful types of trim in Media Composer, JKL Trim. JKL Trim allows you to perform a trim while playing the video at either real-time or at a variable speed so becomes a very dynamic tool in constructing both the radio edit as well as accompanying video edits. Let's continue trimming with this sequence. We have everything pretty well done up to here and I'm just going to zoom in and let's play through these couple of edits here and determine if there is anything to fix.
(Male speaker: ?master himself.) (Male speaker 2: So it's almost like a thread that keeps all of the pieces together and keeps the magic.) (Male speaker 3: One of my favorite scenes?) Looks like we have some issues right here. Let's concentrate on this. I'm going to go ahead and enter trim, let's play loop and see what we can do to the A side, B side, or both. (Male speaker 2: ...and keeps the magic.) (Male speaker 3: One of my favorite scenes is?) I don't think Dr. Shannon is finished saying what he actually says.
Let's go ahead and click on the A side, and I'm going to hold down my L key in JKL. So I'm going to go forward at real-time, so let's roll out the handle to see if he says anything else. (Male speaker 2: ?throughout it. So mysterious?) So he says, "keep the magic throughout it." We want to include that. I'm going to go back and again I'm going to hold down K because I want to go a little bit slower.
And I'm going to forward with L ever so slowly until we get those words included. So I'm going to hold down K, rock forward with L. I'm going to release and I think we've got it. I think he just says, "throughout it." We just added about 1 second or 25 frames and let's play loop. (Male speaker 2: ...magic throughout it.) (Male speaker 3: One of my favorite scenes is?) (Male speaker 2: ...magic throughout it.) All right, I think that works. It looks like Yoel is also being cut off.
Let's enter at the B side trim, and to add frames to the B side, I'm going to go to the left, which means I'm going to press J. Now again I don't want to press J in real-time. I'm going to press K and then rock back with J because I don't think we have too many frames to get rid of. So I'm going to press K, rock back with J. I'm going to release and let's see what we've got. (Male speaker 2: ...magic throughout it.) (Male speaker 3: But I would say one of my favorite scenes is?) (Male speaker 2: ...magic throughout it.) (Male speaker 3: But I would say one of my favorite?) I think we took too many, so let's go ahead and rock forward so I'm going to hold down K and rock forward with L.
And I'll release and let's test. (Male speaker 2: ...magic throughout it.) (Male speaker 3: I would say one of my favorite scenes?) (Male speaker 2: ?magic?) So he says everything that he's supposed to on both the A side and the B side, so I think we're good. We can keep going through it transition-by-transition fixing it up with JKL Trim. JKL Trim is also called Dynamic Trim, because it allows you to play the footage as you trim, which is often very important in being much more attached to and involved with the footages you trim.
In this way, you don't have to watch the footage, trim, and then watch the footage again to see the result. You're actually viewing the change in real-time.
