In Avid Media Composer 5 Essential Training, author Ashley Kennedy demonstrates basic and intermediate editing techniques in Media Composer, one of the most widely used nonlinear, video editing systems. This course covers how to build sequences, mix audio, color correct footage, apply effects, and troubleshoot common post-production issues in Media Composer. Exercise files accompany the course.
Another very useful advanced trim method is Slide, which allows you to change a shot's position but not its content or duration. It's a great tool for moving clips back and forth within the larger structure of the sequence. And especially a useful method for positioning cut-away shots. Sliding a shot means you change the position of a shot between two adjacent shots. When you do this the handles of the adjacent shots fill the space left by the middle sliding shot. Let's take a look at a little animation so that we can understand this.
I've got shots X, Y and Z. Shots X and Z are going to stay exactly where they are, and Shot Y is sliding back and forth between them. It's doing this because the handles of shots X and Y are accommodating this movement. Let's take a look in our own sequence where Slide might be useful. Many times you want the video to start in the same place that our audio starts.
So for example right here we might want the Ballerina shot to start exactly when our announcer starts talking. Let's take a look. (Male speaker: Tony Williams's Urban Nutcracker, now in its 9th season. Going through December.) Yes, I think it'll be nicer if we had the beginning of this shot start exactly when he starts talking. So let's go ahead and slide it over. To slide a shot, I Alt+Lasso this segment or if I am on a Mac, Option+Lasso.
And you see that we get our trim rollers on the outside of the segment. If I drag this you can see that I again have a four window display and this time the first and the fourth windows are updating. They represent the frames on either side of the middle segment. So as I slide it back-and- forth we see where it will go. But I know that I want to drop it right here where the narration starts. And I'm going to release and that's just about right.
I am going to go ahead and play loop and see how I like it. (Music Playing.) (Male speaker: Tony Williams's Urban Nutcracker. Going through December 21st at..) We've adjusted the placement of this shot, but we haven't affected the timing of the overall sequence. Let's take a look at our magician's sequence. And again, if I wanted to move this over to the left, but keep everything else where it was, Slide would be a great tool.
So I'm going to Alt+Lasso this entire part because I want to bring over not only the video but the music as well. I am going to deselect A1 and A2 because I want those to stay where they are at. I'll zoom in so we can see better. And let's go ahead and slide everything over. And let's see how we like this. (Male speaker 2: In the story is like you know the apprentice is trying to learn how to become a magician.) (Music playing) I liked where that video came in.
We have the video and the music coming a little earlier and that goes well with what he is saying. Now we have a little bit of an audio adjustment to make, but we'll learn that in a future movie. Both Slip and Slide are great tools for the fine-tuning process. And you will certainly find yourself using them often to tweak shots within your sequence as you edit. Definitely practice them often as you continue to refine your editing skills.
