Joint orientation is pretty important, but those rules aren't being followed here. In this particular case, it works out, but you should maintain consistency by keeping the joints properly oriented after translating individual joints in the chain.
Otherwise, I do like this course. It gives some basic solid rig structure for mechanical objects.
