Having your own online store is great and having one that you've gotten for free is even better. However, you may want to actually add a level of customization to this that makes it a little bit more personalized to you. Because with the free account here at Magento Go you do get a free online store but you don't get your own custom URL. Your URL will actually be something.gostore.com. And while that's okay, most people are going to want to have their business name .com or their name .com.
And so I would recommend actually doing that before you even get started, go through and get your own custom domain name that way it's all ready to go. Once you have your store pretty much built up and you're ready to actually link that domain to your store, this is how you do it. You log into your My Account screen, you can get there by going to My Account and then clicking on your account name and it should take you to this screen here. Once you're on this screen, you then need to go down to the Custom URL section and click Add. Now if you're not sure exactly what this means, you can come right over here to Custom URL and click on that and it will explain to you that a domain name is an Internet address that makes it easier for people to find your store.
It's also a tool for branding and an affordable domain name can be purchased from numerous domain registrars and Internet hosting companies. I'm sure you've heard of Go Daddy or even something like hover.com or various different domain registrars that are out there. I actually recommend hover.com because it's so easy and so quick. So if you try something like hover.com go find your domain name and then register that, then you will be able to use that domain here on Magento Go. In order to do that what you'll need to do is read up about it, and so go to the Custom URL section here and then click on the Knowledge Base link.
When you click on the Knowledge Base link it will take you to this page here. And so it will tell you all about setting up your Custom URL for your domain. Basically there are two parts here, step one you go into the Magento dashboard like so, you click Add, and then you simply type out the domain name that you want, so like mydomain.com and then you'll click Save. Once you click Save, that's all there is to do on the Magento Go side. However now you need to log into the back end of your domain registrar and configure the DNS settings to point to the following IP address.
And you can click on this question mark to see exactly what that means and it tells you that you must configure your DNS settings to point the Magento Go, because basically you have to tell your original website provider, wherever this domain was purchased, Go Daddy, hover.com, wherever, you have to tell that URL, hey every time someone types you in, I want you to automatically point to this Magento Go store. And you do that for something called an A record in your DNS configuration, and it has to point to the IP address that they give you here. If you don't know how to do that you can go back to the Knowledge Base article and they walk you through this step by step as if you were doing it on godaddy.com.
Now you don't necessarily have to do it on Go Daddy, you can do it on hover.com or any number of other places, but this idea remains the same. You need to find a place where you can go in and edit the DNS settings, you then do need to add something called an A record to this, and the A record needs to point to this IP address, and once you do that everything should be ready to go. The final step in this is you need to activate your new domain. And so basically what you do here is you go into the Admin panel and that's the Admin panel of your store.
So I'll go back in here and click Manage my Store. Once you're inside of this you need to go down the System and you need to go down to Configuration. Once the Configuration screen has been loaded go over here to the left and click on Web and inside of the Web options you'll notice you have URL Options, Active Domain and Default Pages. And so basically here you can say, hey I want to switch this over to my domain.com, meaning every time somebody accesses this, the active domain is my domain.com.
Or you can set it back to this if the URL happens to not be working or whatever it might be. But once you've set that over, then you're ready to go. You click Save Config and everything should be okay. Again, refer back to the Knowledge Base, that's going to be your best source because they're going to update this with any changes they make going forward and keeping this up-to-date is very important obviously so they're going to do it, and you can see step-by-step how to do exactly what we just talked about so that you can use your own custom domain name on your Magento Go store.
