Configuring a shopping cart for your business usually means working with a series of shifting parts. Magento Go helps merchants quickly and easily build a store to sell products and services online, with no software to install and configure and no servers to manage. In this course, author Justin Seeley shows how to use the robust set of tools in Magento Go to create, manage, and grow your online business. The course covers setting up products, product categories, tax settings, and shipping methods; creating payment methods with PayPal, Authorize.Net, and Google Checkout; customizing your store's pages and themes; and managing customer data and product ratings.
There may come a time as you start to work with and create your pages here inside of Magento Go that you want to go back in and alter the layout of that page, and you have the ability to do that. In order to access the Design section of the pages, all you have to do is go back to CMS > Pages, and choose Manage Content. Once you get into the Manage Content section, you are going to find the page you wish to edit. In this case, I want to change the Contact Us page. And once I find that page, I need to navigate over to the Design section. Inside of the Design section, you can choose a new layout option.
You have the option of Empty, 1 column, 2 columns with left bar, 2 columns with right bar, and 3 columns. Let's take a look at all of these, so you get an idea of what they look like and how they work. I'll start off with the 1 column layout, that's what we're working with right now, and I'll Save and Continue Editing this, and then I'll preview it. And so, when I look at this preview, you are going to notice it's 1 column that spans the entire width of the page. So if you wanted that, this is what the 1 column layout looks like. Let's close that up and let's change this now to 2 columns with a left bar.
I'll Save and Continue Editing and then I'll click Preview. When I preview it, you're going to notice that right here in the middle is your Content Block, and to the left, we have a Sidebar. There's no content in that sidebar because we haven't filled anything out inside of the left bar section of our CMS blocks. But in this case, if there was anything in there, you would see it there. You actually do see a small navigation right there. Let's close that up and go back. I'll change this now to 2 columns with the right bar, and I'll click Save and Continue Editing.
When I preview it this time, you'll see the content has shifted to the left, and there is a right sidebar over here, and we do have a Compare Product screen, and also a Community Poll over here as well. These are auto-generated and automatically a part of the sidebar. You can go in and tweak these and change them anytime you want. Let's close this up, and go back, and take a look at 3 columns, and I'll hit Save And Continue Editing, and I'll preview it again. And once I preview it, you'll notice that we have the content smaller in the middle, we also have this right sidebar, and a left sidebar.
So we could actually flank the content on both sides with more information. So changing the layout allows you not only to alter the look and feel of the page, but also allows you to present more information to your users in one single space. So you can have new product listings, polls, access to their shopping cart, different links, anything you want can go in these sidebar areas and that makes it so much more useful, because you can get more information in front of the customer while at the same time still serving the purpose of giving them meaningful information in the middle as well.
So the next time you need to go in and change your page layout, remember, just go back up to CMS > Pages, and choose Manage Content. Once you're inside of that, check out the Design tab on the left-hand side, and then pick which layout you like best; 1, 2, or 3 columns.
