Video: Adding links to the nav bar

One of the more confusing things that I found as I was exploring the Magento Go system was the fact that it's a little difficult to add a link to your navigation bar inside of your homepage. So as you can see on this homepage here, I've got this product listing which is based upon the product categories that I've created. But I don't see any links to any pages in my system whatsoever. And so, I wanted to know exactly how to add one of these pages to this, and so in order to do that, you actually have to create quite the workaround. And so I'm going to walk you through how to do that right now.

Adding links to the nav bar

One of the more confusing things that I found as I was exploring the Magento Go system was the fact that it's a little difficult to add a link to your navigation bar inside of your homepage. So as you can see on this homepage here, I've got this product listing which is based upon the product categories that I've created. But I don't see any links to any pages in my system whatsoever. And so, I wanted to know exactly how to add one of these pages to this, and so in order to do that, you actually have to create quite the workaround. And so I'm going to walk you through how to do that right now.

The first thing you'll need to do is go into your Catalog section, and open up the Manage Category section. I'm just going to open this up in a new tab. Once I have that done, I'm also going to go into my CMS section, and I'm going to open up the pages, and I am going to manage this content and open it up in a new tab as well. So now, I've got three basic tabs open; I've got my Dashboard, I've got my Categories, and I've got my Content for my pages all open. I can close my Home page for now, and also close my account dashboard. So I'm only working with these three.

And so, we're going to start in the Categories, and when we're inside the Categories section, I'm going to pick my Default Category. Your categories may look a little different than this, that's just because I've cleaned up some of mine to put them into a product listing like so. If you go back and watch the Categories movie, you'll see how to do this exactly. But when I select Default Category, the overarching category, I need to add a new subcategory to this. So let's say for instance that I wanted to add a link to our About Us page. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to call this About Us, and you'd make sure that it is set to Active, and then you also need to make sure that down towards the bottom, that the Include in Navigation Menu is set to Yes.

Then finally, you need to come up here, and make sure the URL Key is something like about-us, just like that. It needs to be all lowercase letters, and no spaces, only hyphens or underscores, and once you have that done, just click Save Category. That should put a new category called About Us over here on the left. And so, once I do that, now if I go back to my Home page, you'll see there is actually a link right there. But if I click on that, it doesn't go anywhere right now, because we haven't told it to do anything. This is merely linking to a category that doesn't yet exist.

So once I have this done, I can then go back over here to my Manage Pages, and I actually do have an About Us page right there, and so, here is my Magento Store URL key. This is actually where I need it to go. So I need to remember that. So I'll just keep this open. But this is what I'm looking for later on. Once I have this done, I'm going to go back over into my Dashboard, I'm going to go down to Catalog, and go to URL Rewrite Management. Once I do that, you should see your new category up at the top here that says About Us right there.

The number may differ based on your categories. That's okay as long as it's about-us.html. So what we're going to do here is we're going to click on it, and once we click on it, we are going to go down and find the target path which is this area here, and we need to select this just by clicking and dragging over it, and we need to copy it to our clipboard with Command+C or Ctrl+C. After we have copied that to our clipboard, we then need to go and set the Redirect to 301 Permanent, and then we'll click Save.

Once we click Save, it takes us back out. You can see now that this category now has a RP next to it for Redirect Permanent. Now once we have that done, we need to click in the upper right-hand corner on Add URL Rewrite. In the Create URL Rewrite section, we need to change this to Custom. In the ID path, we need to type the URL key of the page link using only hyphens instead of spaces. So basically, what we need to do here is type out about-us.

For the request path, we need to paste in the target path that we copied earlier, and then we need to in the target path type out the page link that we're trying to go to. So let's go back over to the Pages here, and let's just select this, copy that, go back over into our URL rewrite, and paste it in. And so, for the redirect here, we need to set this to 301, and then we need to click Save. Now this could take some time for the redirect to work, but theoretically, when we go back to our homepage and refresh, whether it be now or sometime later, we should be able to then click on this, and it takes us to our About page that has been created just like so.

So it is a roundabout way of adding links to your navigation bar, but that is how you do it. To control how these are laid out in the navigation bar, all you have to do is go back into your Categories and adjust the stacking order here. So if I want About Us to come before Products in the listing, just drag it up until it's above it, and let go. When I go back to the page and refresh, you can see that About Us and Products are going to flip places in the navigational order. So if you want to add links to the pages inside of your Magento Go Store, or if you want to add links to something like your Twitter or Facebook profile, you follow exactly the steps I just outlined there, and you'll be able to add your links to your navigation bar.

Hopefully, after you've practiced it a few times, it will get a little bit easier.
