Selecting text in the version of Preview that ships with Snow Leopard has gotten easier and more accurate thanks to Preview's ability to analyze the structure of PDF documents and recognize not only words and paragraphs, but columns of text as well. This is especially useful if you need to copy text out of a PDF document that's laid out in columns, like this document I have open here. To select this text, I need to make sure I have the Text tool selected. Now in previous versions of Preview I wouldn't be able to properly select the text on this page. If I started dragging at the first paragraph, all of the text from across all three columns will be selected as I dragged down to the bottom of the page because Preview wasn't able to recognize the column breaks and just assumed that the text ran completely across the page.
Not so in the Snow Leopard version of Preview. Here I can select just this first paragraph if I want to, or just move to the right and you can see that it is selecting the paragraphs in the proper order. Preview knows to keep the text isolated by column. Now I can copy the selected text, paste it into another application like TextEdit. And there it is. Of course this all is just gibberish, so we have a lot of spell checking to do. So there you have the new intelligent text selection capabilities of Preview.
