Mac OS X has been rewritten from the ground up, and Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard New Features highlights all of the most important and user-relevant aspects of this release. Experienced instructor and lifelong Mac user Garrick Chow introduces current Mac users to the improvements in the latest OS. While not a complete overhaul of the operating system, this update does address a fair number of internal systems and external user features. Garrick explores all of these updates, including enhancements to the Finder and the Dock and a completely revamped QuickTime player. He shows the wealth of improvements to built-in applications like Safari, Preview, iChat, and Mail, and explains the updated 64-bit support within Snow Leopard.
Safari 4 now integrates Google suggestions into the Google Search field. Google Suggest is a feature built into Google search engine that offers suggestions based on what you are typing into the Search field. Let's say I am looking for some info on Snow Leopard. As I begin to type, Google instantly starts offering suggestions of what it thinks I might be looking for. You can see it's already suggested Snow Leopard, Snow Leopard release date, Snow Leopard facts, Snow Leopard pictures, so on and so on. I probably don't even have to continue typing at this point. If I just want to look up Snow Leopard I just select that option and there are my search results, which is pretty convenient.
This functionality now appears directly in Safari's Google Search bar, so I don't even have to visit Google's site to receive the benefits of Google Suggest. I just click in the Google Search field in Safari and let's say I am looking for some information on HDTV audio and I see a list of suggestions. I have HDTV audio sync, delay, lag, problems, quality assistance and so on. I really like this feature because not only does it make it easier to perform searches, but by reading through the suggestions you may find answers to questions you didn't even know to ask.
For example, maybe I wanted to buy an HDTV audio cable, but here I see a suggestion talking about HDTV audio lag which is a problem I have experienced but have never looked up, and Google Suggest has now reminded me to look into it. The only problem I have with Google Suggest is that it sometimes causes me to spend more time surfing sites not directly related to what I was originally looking for simply because some of the suggested searches caught my attention, but I guess that's the price we pay for the added convenience of having Google Suggest built right into Safari.
