With the release of the Leopard operating system for Macs, Apple has added or updated more than 300 features. In Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard Essential Training, Macworld senior editor Christopher Breen explores each of Leopard's vital features. He walks viewers through the installation, then goes over how to use the interface and navigational elements, work with the Dock's stacking feature, and take advantage of the iLife applications, Safari, and Mail. These tutorials are designed for people who are new to the Mac or who are upgrading to the Leopard operating system.
And now let's take a look at iChat. iChat began life as a pretty simple instant messaging program. It was a way to chat with your friends via text in real time, but it's a whole lot more than that now. Not only can you chat in text, but you can do voice chats as well as video chats and this very handy for those with recent Apple laptops with built-in iSight cameras and microphones. iMacs as well have iSight camera's built-in. Leopard's iChat has a couple of new sharing features that make it very cool. You can now control the screen of another person using iChat under Leopard and you can also share documents and images.
Let's take a look at iChat by launching it now. And here's the Welcome screen. Welcome to iChat. Let's click Continue to move on through it. Now at this point it's going to ask us to set up an account. I have a .Mac account, so I'm already setup. If I didn't have a .Mac account, I could sign up for a .Mac account by clicking this Get an iChat account button. I already have one and in a minute we're going to look at another way to get an account for free. Click Continue, and I am now ready to use iChat. So I click Done and here is my iChat buddy list. You will notice that no one is in it. We're going to take care of that in a little bit. Now let's suppose that you don't have that .Mac account, but you'd like to us iChat. You can do that by signing up for a free AIM account. This is a service offered by AOL. So let's do that, just to get another identity. So we go to Safari, launch Safari.
And we'll enter www.aim.com and press Return. This takes us to aim.com where we can sign up for a free AIM account and that works with iChat. So Join the Fun! Get a Screen Name. I'd like to Create an Account please. To do so, I will click Continue. Alright, so now you have to choose a Desired Screen Name. Bear in mind that there are about 17 billion Screen Names that have already been taken up. So if your name is John, if you try to type in John1.
I guarantee you, you are not going to get that name. So we'll type in something I hope that's obscure enough and that will be numbles25, and by the way numbles are the hearts and lungs of a deer, just so you know next time you're playing Scrabble. I will type in a password and the password needs to be 6 to 16 letters. And you need to retype it. And my display name is going to be Chris Breen each time I sign in. Okay then you sign up for a security question.
Select a question. Let's see. Where were you born? I was born on the Bad Side of Town. And once again I was born on the Bad Side of Town. I can give them an alternate e-mail address. In this case I don't care to do that. My Birth Date. We're going to say that I was born on Christmas day, in, oh let's say, 1980, none of that is true, of course. I'm a Male.
The country I live in is the United States of America and we'll say my zip code is 95521, even though it is not. So Terms of Service, I'm going to agree to that. Now I have to enter this image text here because they don't want robots that are patrolling the Internet to sign up for these things automatically. They want to make sure that this is a real human being. So I type that in and I click Submit. There! Congratulations, numbles25 is now my Screen Name I can Continue, but I don't need to. I'm done as far as Safari is concerned. So I will quit Safari.
Now I will go into iChat and I will create a New Identity. So I go to iChat - Preferences - Accounts. I'm now going to create a new account by clicking plus. It will ask me, what kind of account this is; is it a .Mac? No, it's an AIM account. And I will type in my Screen Name and I will type in my Password and click Done.
I can leave the Preference and here I am. I'm going to get rid of my old name, and here is my name here. I am now known as numbles25 to those people far and wide. In our next video we're going to add a buddy and we're going to have a little chat.
