In this chapter, we are going to take a quick look at some new capabilities of Mail, Apple's email application that ships with OS X. As is the case with Snow Leopard itself, many of the improvements in Mail are under-the-hood and not something I can point out to you. But one word that describes the overall feel of Mail in Snow Leopard is 'snappier.' According to Apple, Mail launches about twice as fast in Snow Leopard as it does in Leopard. You can see in the doc that Mail is not currently running, but when I click its icon, it pretty much opens right away. Of course, I only have a handful of messages in here right now, but you should definitely notice an improved launch time on your own Mac.
Apple also states that Mail is up to four times faster to list the contents of a mailbox, and it doubles the speed of searching and moving messages. Additionally, if you often compose or edit HTML email messages, you will notice increased reliability, thanks to several more behind the scenes improvements to Mail. So those are just some things you'll notice in terms of speed and overall handling in Snow Leopard's Mail app. Next, let's take a look at some of the more tangible new features you'll find.
